I've recently asked this question on another forum, but I felt as though I should ask it here as well.

Question(s)
Is there such a thing as a five inch CZ Quicksilver "Double D" search coil and if so... how well does this coil operated when compared to the standard concentric CZ coil?

Thanks in advance,

Wet salt sand is a no go...without lots of noise that is. It's only suited for dry sand when on the beach. If you can put up with the chatter you can get away with it to some degree but you'll miss lots of targets and depth will suffer tremendously. F4 or F5 would be a better choice or even better...any of the CZ series detectors are proven wet sand units and you can find them at decent prices used.

Re: minelab e-trac

The E-TRAC locks onto the TID shallow, deep, or in trash better than any Explorer and better at depth than the F75/T2. It beats the heck out of the Explorer because ML straightened and expanded the conductive line. On the Explorer the conductive line had a sort of curve and was vertical. The cursor on the Exp will jump on a deep target from the upper left to the lower right... an experienced user can read this though and glean info from the jump. However the inexperienced user will have to work through hours and hours of use to come to the place where this jumping is useful. The E-TRAC on the other hand has a conductive line that runs from left to right and runs from 1-50... the ferrous readings on most good targets are bunched around the 12 ferrous number but can run between 8 and 16 or so as targets get deeper and/or more masked. The ferrous numbers being bunched around 12 aren't really the true ferrous reading but are a bit arbitrary in order to help the user to ID good targets... BUT... the big thing here is the straightened conductive line. If the cursor bounces on the ET, it bounces up and down on the ferrous line... not upper left to lower right like the Explorer... SO... the conductive number remains stable both in trash and at depth (though the ferrous number may vary and bounce a bit... usually it will not go above 25 or especially above 30 and still be a non-ferrous target.

In short the conductive number will almost always be true and the ferrous number will be close. When a target is masked, the target may only hit correctly from one direction but it will consistantly hit correctly from that direction. If the target isn't masked and is either shallow or deep the conductive number target will usually hit with a correct conductive number from at least two directions though as depth increases the ferrous number will become more unreliable. The conductive number is the key to getting deep and/or masked targets with the ET and the Explorer lacks this ability. The F75 and hte F75 LTD gives me an unreliable TID at depth but it could be the mineralization here. I don't know if the TID would be better at depth in neutral soil.

The SovereignGT also has an amazing TID on targets at depth but not on masked targets... the E-TRAC rules the roost on masked targets as far as I can tell, though I must say that I am interested in trying the F75/T2/Omega with 0 disc, identifying the common iron at a site and then digging iron signals that are different... that may be a game changer.

I am convinced that I can do everything I want or need to do with an E-TRAC, F75 LTD, T2, Omega-8000, SovereignGT, and a Tejon... and a whole bunch of coils... laff.

Sounds right huh? Seriously though the E-TRAC is an amazing machine and it is easy to use if you will just trust it and NEVER, EVER try to make is be an Explorer!!

Hi all, Hope some of you folks can help me out, I recently bought an F2 and in general I am happy with it . As a dry machine and in dry sand it is a coin killer BUT if Itry to detect in wet sand it goes nuts. I have discriminated / notched various items in different combinations and reduced sensitivity as advised by Fisher labs but still no joy. I live in Ireland and have tried this unit on a number of different beaches over many hours, the only result I got by adjusting sensitivity was to reduce chatter but every signal so far has been false...believe me I have dug every one just to be sure. I know this machine has fixed ground balance and is not totally suited to wet work but I did expect some degree of usage after reading the reviews. Hope you can shed some light and ease my frustration,

MOST analog CZ's will ascertain max depth at a setting in the 4.4 - 5.0 range. THIS IS IN ID MODE ONLY!!!! (Autotune/all-metal is different; requiring a setting of '10'). IF your unit requires 7 or 8....... but can still acquire a dime at 11" - 12"......that's perfectly fine.

Rotating your Grnd Bal knob whilst sweeping coil.......is NOT ground balancing the unit; rather, it is a way to "find the least noise/chatter". Has NOTHING to do with balancing to the dirt. This method works on quite a few CZ's.....and in quite a few types of dirt.

Don't get too hung up on the sensitivity/depth relationship. Some CZ's have experienced tuning shift (rare) and/or have been calibrated slightly differently from one unit to another. Sensitivity of CZ3D...correct me if I'm wrong Tom....is at approx. 98% when set at 4.8 to 5.0. That's for a 'properly tuned' CZ. The fact that your unit may be set up with sensitivity at 98% when at 7.0 is really a moot point. How deep do you expect to dig a dime? I've got a really wierd CZ3D...ID windows slightly out of whack but it's been a good thing in my case..I think...but there's another post addressing this issue (Canadian Perspective).

To begin with...I'd suggest GBng (fast or accurate method...not alot of difference between the two IMHO) Fast method is easy and quick. Raise coil to waist level with Volume=10, Sensitivity=10, GB=10, All Metal Mode. Depress PP button and hold in while you lower the coil to rest flat on the ground (make sure there's no metal before you start). Begin turning GB dial counterclockwise until the background threshhold hum/buzz just barely dissappears and you're good to go. Now...turn that volume down to 5, set Disc=0, Sensitivity at between 3 & 5 max....get out there and put in some hours (50 - 100hrs). Dig all the mid & high tones and learn your machine. Once you're used to it you can begin setting sensitivity higher...keeping in mind that with sensitivity increases also comes the risk of target masking as the search area of the coil is increased.

As for being frustrated...c'mon up to Canada and try figuring out ANY detector to dig post 2000 clad and you'll learn the true meaning of the word.

Brian, I believe the deal on 7"+ dimes is partly why the Omega has become so popular. Although the T2 and F75 are an improvement on silver vs previous mid / hi freq machines, no matter how you shake it, coil for coil lower frequency is going to give a stronger response on dimes. While results on 'in the clear coins' may differ a bit here and there, throw in trash and masking and I'll take the lower freq machine every time for those deeper dimes.

Edit: Well I did not read all the prior posts so most of this is duplication. Tom D stated the reasons well.

Hopefully the new high performance 'front end" of the GB/G2 (at the 'right' freq.. whatver that may be) will morph into a deep dime machine.

Forgot to mention:

YES..............using monotone and a Disc of '6' .... is a cheap way of tone-break/split-tone on the F75; ,,,,, but/yet/understanding that... you can only hear one side of the split (a single tone will be heard when a target is ABOVE the Disc setting). I would like to hear all of the metal objects that are in the ground...that are below the Disc setting; but can not achieve this....any time Disc is employed. Any time a target (or....especially a composite of targets) are under the coil....that are ABOVE the Disc setting................................the detector will report a good and solid tone............even if the composite of all the targets is STILL within the 'iron' range (above '6'....but below '15'). If monotone is selected........this will not matter. You will still receive/hear a good & solid tone.....and will MOST PROBABLY still dig the target. IF IF IF you are in a multi-tone option with a Disc of '6'........you will receive/hear the low 'iron' tone on a composite of targets that ID's below '15'.....but still above the Disc '6' setting. Chances are............you will NOT dig these audibly solid sounding (iron tone) targets..........as most folks do not dig the low iron tones. Utilizing Disc '6' and monotone...........and you are more likely to 'investigate' the audibly solid hits....regardless of the VDI.........EVEN IF it is in the 'iron' range.

Yes, dirt mineralization can (somewhat) alter these settings/performance.............making it a necessity for you to find out what YOUR local conditions/settings will need to be. Your dirt will dictate. I do know that Chicago dirt (somewhat mineralized.......requiring Grnd Bal.....GB was '45') did not alter the "Disc 6" (and monotone) requirement.

Yes, there are some acrylic plastics that work well....and are fairly inexpensive. One thing that is hardly taken into consideration; electrostatic buildup on the surface of the base material (the resin/plastic). It can slightly hinder/alter performance.

Over a decade ago, I had a few (self created) acrylic plastic cubes with ferrous metals and 1 non-ferrous metal target visibly "suspended" in the plastic. I used small-test filament fishing line to suspend the targets at exacting X-Y-Z three-dimentional coordinate axis points in the rectangular cube BEFORE pouring the acrylic into the mold. A Chief design engineer confiscated my complex-target test-standard tools (acrylic cubes) from me.....as he badly needed them. I have yet to create this (these) tools again.............and need to.

......Coil approach "Angle-of-Attack" was (then) visibly critical whilst sweeping coil over the cube(s). Just a 1-Deg change in coil approach angle over the 'complex-target' cube.... can make a day-or-night (go/no-go) delta/differential. A AWESOME tool that is VISIBLE to the human eye...........can be a TRUE eye-opener!
Tom Z I read the discussion you posted and it's well worth a read. So many little details in this hobby, but the littlest of details can make the difference between successfully recovering the goods or not. All metal hunting is so different then disc hunting that it really takes a different mind set to master in trashy areas.
Correct. And yes, a lower freq (silver resonant) unit would be better/well suited for deep silver coin hunting. Single freq units handle iron better....giving better ID.....less falsing. The newer single freq Fisher units are doing quite well in bad dirt,,,,,,,,, much better than previous generation units. In fact, under certain circumstances, I've witnessed the single freq F75 slightly trump the multi-freq CZ. ... Pulse is still the way to go; but ID capabilities with a PI needs to advance. Lower freq's penetrate the dirt better....and are more resonant to silver.........but will miss the deeper lower conductor targets. This is why higher freq's do better with lower conductor relics; yet, higher freq's are attenuated to a higher extent IRT penetration abilities.

I agree with you, but deep small silver (dime sized) targets do not necessarily have great audio characteristics either in most of the areas I hunt (1800's inner city trashy parks with mineralized soil). I think it's pretty well established that multifrequency machines are able to handle mineralized soil far better then single frequency macines. Even my CZ-70 Pro does better in mineralized soil then my F75 LTD, BUT it's an entirely different machine and there are pros & cons between it and a new machine like the F75 LTD or Omega. I'd love to see Fisher get back into the multifrequency game, but it doesn't appear that Dave Johnson has any interest in it for whatever reason. The new Gold Bug SE seems to be doing quite well handing mineralized soil from recent reports, so perhaps FT has new advances in VLF coin shooters in store for us (an Omega with boost mode, a trigger and a back light would be my perfect machine).

My Omega is doing a better job at smaller silver, if the O8 had a boost mode (or just more depth) it would be a killer machine for deep (8"+) silver turf hunting where 90% of the silver coinage is dimes.

Tom I would say 8" and deeper. Even at 6" - 8" the F75 LTD can be iffy......larger silver it's fine with, for instance I dug a measured 11" deep SLQ with the F75 LTD and the TID and tone was spot on, but it has trouble with smaller silver, I would assume due to it's higher frequency. I do dig smaller lower conductors that are deep and sound very good on my LTD, but if you're a deep turf silver hunter, from what I can see, the Etrac will best the F75 LTD :(

From what I think I remember about Tom and tones is he uses mono or four tone depending on the disc. Zero disc he will use 4 tone and 1-6 mono though his soil is different from ours I can't seem to remember if he has tested the LTD in soil that is more like some of us hunt.
So is that why those that hunt in two tone are not using the LTD the way it should be used or does different soils sometimes need different tones? Or iron VS trash different tones. I like two tones but use mono for the most part. Don't use four tone as much becasue the LTD can chatter so much that it is hard to hunt all day like that. It seems some of the new Fisher and Tech units coming out are a bit different but not a giant step forward like the LTD was. I know the money they spend is not what a car company or computer spends to bring a better product. This is a small hobby and I think a lot of baby boomers are the ones that spend the money on new product hoping to go deeper and unmask targets that are bing walked over. True you can almost never out hunt an area but with the way the world is changing it is harder to find new places to hunt.
