Just a question for you folks

How many times have you had an awesome day relic or coin hunting with a detector and on the way home, praised it as being the best detector ever. Then, the next time out with that same unit have a terrible day, get home, and start searching the forums and internet for something better

Some days you get the bear and some days he gets you.....I think the last part is part of the hobby..

I agree 100 % Big D. Very well said. But it's wearing me out. I feel at times I spend more time searching for that bigger gun trying get the bear when a well placed .22 would do the trick. Regardless, it is a heck of a lot of fun and good therapy for whatever ails us.

Just keep 4-5 in the arsenal and rotate them around! Some days a Tesoro beep and dig are the most fun than a ctx 3030 other times maybe not!
Re: Just a question for you folks

No doubt it has happened to many Bill lol. I think some of it when getting a new unit is tht you tend to take your time more while learning the machine. In doing this more finds come to light.

It's fun though either way and some of my best mental health days have found me back at the house without a single keeper. Used to be "how many keepers" but now it's learning new units, making friends on the way or just getting away from the job.

Location is one of the the most important factors in having a successful outing, equipment is second, followed by operator savvy. JMHO

I have not had it happen since I changed brands over 6 years ago, I don't judge a Detector on the type of finds I dig, But I do judge them on how often I dig Good finds, It was easier back in the 70s and 80s+ but machines got better and a lot has been recovered so now it is harder to make good finds,

Some of the older machines were great and they still are, but machines have not moved on that much since 2000-ish, So the thing to do is find something that works and stick with it, works for me.

It's been my experience you need to swap those last two...

A bad game of golf forces you to buy new clubs, as you have just chucked your clubs into the nearest pond!

Same can be said with detecting to---if you've just wrapped your detector around the nearest tree!winking smiley
Re: Just a question for you folks

I do a lot of thinking when I am out detecting..

The question always is,,,,at a new site,,,has it been hunted before???

What is the sites condition???

How much iron??

How old???

How deep are the good targets generally???

When I am discovering targets,,,can something be said,,,like is target is obvious area,,off the beaten path.

Are discovered targets,,,,are they surrounded by nails or iron,,,,can I start to make a reasonably conclusion about maybe the experience level and or the detector capabilities of the person/ detector that may have been in the site previously.

How long do I hunt,,,before I start bearing down???

And do I have the right machine for the site at hand???

All of this plays into the equation.

Can a person have a bad day with few finds????
YES,,,,it doe s with the territory.

Until you hunt a site for a while,,,,you won't know.

Now after you hunt a site,,,,then you can make some better deductions,,,if you indeed want to make another run.

Could another detector help???

Possibly

Don't forget,,,learning your detector better can help too.

I know this,,,because it has happened to me.

Best learning when detecting,,,,is to hunt behind yourself.
This has been what has helped me the most.

It happens to me all the time. Many Detectors can be set up to run and perform different ways. Take the Deus for instance. You can set it up to run as deep as possible or you can set it up for quick recovery. Some times I would have it set to far to one extreme resulting in a bad days hunt. I learned the value of stock programs by realizing I can return to something workable and reliable with the touch of a button.

Regardless of the hobby, researching and buying the latest & "greatest" is part of the fun, right? The trick is, not to have too many hobbies. Gets expensive.

I really haven't ever felt that way. Every detector I have had since after my starter Radio Shack has been smarter than me. I KNOW the limiting factor is me.

I think operator savvy is as important as any aspect as far as being successful in this hobby, especially relic hunting. Puts me in mind of a hunt I was invited to by a good buddy who was invited by some other relic hunters from a factory where he worked. I knew no one there except my buddy. We all had high dollar detectors. Minelab, T2s, F75, MXT, and one old fellow , I hate to say old cause I'm old,but he was older than me,and used a hearing aid to boot, had a Tesoro Vaquero. Trying to make a long story short. At the end of the day after we all had been crossing each other's path on this hillside for about 5 hours all we could show for it was about 3 bullets, I flat button and a Indian head penny. All except the old fella. He had a pouch full of bullets, a few buttons, knapp sack hooks, etc. I was amazed. After he left the rest of us were standing around jaw jacking and I ask how in the world did that guy pull all that stuff out of here. One of the guys, who was supposedly a metal detector guru replied with a smirk, "Ah he super tunes his unit" I started laughing and replied, "How the hell can I do a super tune" So there ya go, knowing your machine and detector savvy, very important no matter what your swinging.
Oh, forgot to mention. The numbers and printing around the control nobs on his machine were almost worn slam off. This for me was a good memory and a humbling experience.

Bill that's another reason why when I switched brands I went and sold all my other machines because it is easy to get side tracked and it allowed me to concentrate on just one machine.

I find they all have one thing they excel at and one or two things they do 'ok' at, and that for the most part they suck at everything else. Nothing more fustrating than using a hammer for a pair of pliers. Same thing with metal detectors. When you use a detector for its primay design intent, or when you figure out where and how you like it best, its heaven on earth. When you are operating that 'heaven' machine outside those parameters its a crap shoot as to what happens and if you will like it "there" and for "that".

Thats my experience anyway. Probably why I'm always looking. I like the way "this" detector does "that" thing but I'd like to see if I can find a detector that can do "that" thing better.

Its an illness, I swear.

The old adage 90% of the targets dug are by 10% of the detectorist holds true still to this day..

A guy who knows how to hunt and what to do on a hunt and how to use WHATEVER machine he has at that moment will Teach a person alot about others supposedly hunted out spots..

machine comparison are fun I guess saying this will out do this ...but usually that's only on one target or type target....a real operator can make up shortcomings..

That's why I cringe when I hear someone say brand x is better than brand Y on any given hunt and or target...My Y better than your X... I Mean come on.....Better at what?? a certain target or certain soil that's too broad a statement to make in general..move down the street a block and watch what happens..a statement like that can only hold true to a specific thing not a this is the best and mine's better I will hunt behind you and find stuff..What stuff surface Foil or deep silver ??

I look for the best Niche unit I can find for MY wants...but there's alot of awfully good detectors out there and people who know how to get the most out of them and its not so easy to say this is better than that ..

A modern day hunter entering the hobby has tons of info ..but they never have learned how to Know what they Need to begin with..and like it or not like Bill said the old schooler with the worn out unit comes out ahead...WHY..He selected the machine for a reason to him and he learned how to use it..

I will go to me grave saying this..nothing in the world will replace experience ..The more years and time a operator has the more advantage he has..and especially years and years of hunting every kind of site there is from urban to remote..

Its like fishing...... its not always your equipment, sometimes its just your location and YOU. Ive seen a many a guy ..... and i mean good hunters..... hunt hard some days and others when you watch um they are just taking their detector for a walk. Whats their reply when asked..... there is nothing here to find. Not always true, they just abandoned techs that normally produce for them.

When people first get started it this hobby it becomes so easy to get caught up in all the hype reading reviews or Dealers sales Adds / Talk that a person can easily end up swapping machines on a weekly basis, It would be a lot wiser if folks focussed on just one machine and became one with that machine before moving on to another It is like a Good Scotch add anything to it and it becomes just a drink.

I agree on this one 100%. I like to switch around when one doesn't seem to fit my pistol for a particular site. Call it a psychological thing.
