Went detecting yesterday,,found two 5 gallon buckets full, working on my 3rd
October 19, 2016 06:33PM
Went to a spot to detect,,,just couldn't pass up these babies.

They are huge,,and they can be busted properly and yield a lot of meat per nut.

I played with some similar 3 years ago.

I actually learned how to bust on the Internet.

They will need to dry for about a month.

Imay post some after the fact busting pics to show just how big the nuts are and can be gotten out of these.

One 5 gallon bucket yields around 7 quarts of big goodies.

Cheers

They are hickory nuts.

Send me your address Rod,,,will send you a quart bag of goodies--no charge.

Will be Early December before I send. Nuts need to dry some in the hulls.

I have a hickory Grove in my woods and pick them every year! They are delicious! Better than walnuts in my opinion

2 years ago, my kids picked 7000 lbs of black walnuts, about 9 van loads. They got 16c a lb, I got an aching back!

As far as I'm aware, we don't have hickory nuts on this side of the pond, but we do have sweet chestnuts (Spanish chestnuts) if you take the trouble to hunt them out. They were introduced to the U.K by the Romans, apparently. As it's the season for them, and I know of a few trees close to where I was going detecting this afternoon, I combined some nut foraging with some apple picking ("scrumping") and some detecting. About 3 kg (6 lb) of nuts were gathered, I'm sure another visit next weekend will yield similar. The most productive trees are in a small woodland area, but there are virtually no paths, few references, and I get lost every time I visit, but eventually stumble on the trees.

And the detecting session highlight was a complete bronze crotal bell, c.1700's. I love cleaning the dirt out of them and hearing them ring again for the first time in 300 years.
I'll try and post some pics soon.

I thought I would share some of the finished product.

This is about 15 minutes of actual getting the goodies out.

About 20 minutes worth makes a pie.

Thanks for looking.

Rod and Doc,,,
Send me your addresses,,,I will mail a quart to each of you.

When hunting I always look for hickory nut trees to find squirrels. The squirrels love-um and they rarely hit ground before they're eaten.

David I live in a hickory grove, dayum things are like walking on glass after the squirrels cut them and drop the scrap. Never ate them and probably won't, it'll piss off the hundred or so squirrels that live on the hillside then they'll start eating rubber on the vehicles, vacuum hoses and such like they have done before. Our Jack Russells keep them at bay pretty good. Later, the fish are biting!
