Aquachigger's famous river-crossing saddle-bag spill contains a nice example, 'HOUCKS PANACEA':

They come up occasionally here in the UK, but there's not much info about them, and there's seemingly little interest in them. It was illegal to deface coins of the Realm (something that goes back to the days of coin-clipping), and apparently it's more common to find countermarks on foreign coins that circulated as stand-in currency. Particularly French 5c and 10c bronze coins that made up for a lack of official bronze halfpenny/penny coins in the late 1800's.

Have seen a couple dug but never dug one myself.

I've dug 2 seated dime love tokens though from the CW era.

Have also dug a few tokens that were "punched" to show they were redeemed.

Received a Masonic stamped penny in change once, but have never dug any.

I've dug two large cents that were counterstamped. One said cast steel the other had J E on it. I found them at the same spot. The area was a complex of taverns with good water & shelter from the north west. We found lots of old coppers there including a 1793 flowing hair chain cent.

I dug one of those at old doctor's office,,,don't know if this qualifies as counter stamped though.

A guy in our club dug a counter-stamped seated dime that was from a gold rush era pharmacy in Benecia, California that was apparently quite a rarity. I've never dug one yet, but nice to know they're on the left coast too.

I have only found one coin with a counterstamp,
a 1869 Shield nickle with a J.M.B.
I wish I knew more about it.

Digger70, can you get a pic on here of that Flowing Hair Large Cent? Is it in good shape? That's a copper I've been after. Dug a few LC's just a few years after that but never got a FH.

As far as counter stamped coins, I recall having a couple with initials stamped into them.

It is entirely possible that I don't understand what a counterstamp is, I guess. I thought it was one.
Just looked it up to see if I was missing something here, but I don't think I am. Pls enlighten me if I am incorrect. Thx.

I guess by reading this my penny is indeed counter stamped.

But some coins,,,may not be technically counter stamped,,,but rather counter marked.

Beats me. The lead wiki description calls counterstamping and countermarking the same thing.

"A countermarked, punchmarked or counterstamped coin is a coin that has had some additional mark or symbol punched into it at some point during its career as a circulating coin."

But then goes on to say:

"Some experts recommend not to use the term countermark and counterstamp as homonyms, but in different contexts. A counterstamp is applied by a die, and by machine to an existing coin, while a countermark is punched onto the coin, mostly by hand, using a punch and a hammer or a primitive hand-operated machine."

[en.wikipedia.org]

I've learned more on this than I ever thought about too.

I have dug a counterstamped LC...came out of the ground in excellent shape, smooth brown patina...not like the toasted/corroded that they usually are. Would post a pic if I knew how.

Posting pic,,,,

I use photobucket.

Upload your pic to photobucket,,,,then open your pic,,,,look over to the side,,,you will see ways to link,,,,choose box IMG file,,,tap the box,,,if using a computer it will turn yellow and say copied,,then paste in your post.

If using an iPad,,,tap the left side of data in the IMG file box,,,,you may have to tap a few times,,,a menu will eventually come up,,Select,,select all,,,the. COPY,,,,then paste in your post.

The obverse is totally gone. The reverse is identifiable. I don't know how to upload a picture off of my phone or I'd post a picture of it.

The Early American Coppers (EAC) society auctioned an old time complete date collection of counter stamped half cents, 1793-1857, a few years ago. It would take a lifetime to amass such a collection.

There is a decent size collecting base for these coins: [www.exonumia.com]

I purchased a smooth brown counterstamped 1804 large cent a few years back. I owned it for one day and let it go for $100 profit. I think about that coin often...

Looks like this Chain was dug: [www.ebay.com]-
