Anyone using heat shrink tubing to keep their coil cable stationary???
March 24, 2017 02:28AM
I'm very anal about a good drip loop in case may coil gets hyperextended....

I try electrical Tape....to messy after awhile.....and I try velcro strips but always have to adjust it...

So had an Idea...tried some heat shrink 3/4" tubing...

See how it does in the long haul...

Might be the ticket....no sticky tape and no slipping velcro...

Seems to be holding very tight..

I like it.
Is that the heat shrink with hot glue inside or the plain stuff?

I used Gaffers (black) tape for awhile Keith. Worked well & didn't seem to leave a residue when taken off.---Lately I've just been using Velcro strips.-----I'm like you, I'm VERY careful there is no tension from the coil cable going into the coil when the coil is tilted.---Interesting idea you have on the shrink tubing.--------Del

We use the tubing at work it does keep things in tact

Great idea! I'm definitely going to try it.

I've used adhesive backed Velcro and wrapped one layer of the plastic loop part to the rod. Then I used a piece of regular (no adhesive) soft side Velcro around the cord and shaft. It doesn't slide around and holds. You just have to watch where you stick the Velcro on to the shaft so you have the full adjustment. On some machines I like to do it near the main box so the cable doesn't interfere with my hand by flopping around. On the other hand Whites has some cable clips. I just bought some. They are a little hard to slip on but seem to hold tight enough. I've found similar clips but they were usually too big or too weak.

Try self fusing silicone tape, it only sticks to itself so stays clean. Stretch it a bit as you give it a double wrap and your done. A standard roll is about $6.00 and will last a long time.

I've been doing it for years now. I shrink wrap the whole shaft. Be careful to not over heat the wire while putting it on, and to also leave enough exposed cable slack on the bottom of the coil, so it can bend with the coil. The only drawback is that I can not adjust the height of the shaft as my height shrinks from old age lol.

I like the idea Keith! I think I am going to have to do that on a few of mine. Thanks.

I've been using the Velcro like Tab Whisperer above for years. works much better than just wrapping Velcro around the shaft. I may have to try your idea Keith on those coil/rod combinations that I never remove the coil from. Looks like a near permanent fix and easy to removed if wanted.

Nice idea.....might try some medical tape that sticks to itself...has to be changed frequently as get dirty quick but works well...being anal like yourself always wonder about the guys that use dirty units...heck they even take pictures of them dirty on classifieds when selling???? just takes a bit to wipe them off works for me....

Always kept Mine Tight without much of a loop.
Guess been lucky as after 17 Years never had a coil fail for any reason.

I too for years have used the adhesive backed velcro strip attached the lower rod and then a two sided velcros strip to attach cable to rod....and while it is NICE it still moves after awhile...I want a more permanent yet reversible non harming method..

I think the heat shrink may be the ticket..

I don't want a long piece going up rod I collapse my machine for transport in tool box..

already have a new idea and may tweak it in a few minutes might go with a longer piece down shaft and give one twist of cable under heat shrink ??

The heat shrink provides enough flex that wont harm cable over time...

A-1 importance in coil rod mount is too ALWAYS have enough drop loop...you never ever under any circumstance wont to flex that rod too far inadvertently and pull wires loose inside the coil...

that's one of the reason I'm leary of buying used coils at times you just never know if someone shoved it in a toolbox or trunk or anything or accidently fell while walking and flexed it to far..

I prefer my equipment to be properly maintained and cared for ...Their precision instruments treat them as such..

I use vet rap....holds fantastic,if it gets to dirty I just peel it off and replace it with new...comes in many colors, and Camouflage smiling smiley
Also works great on covering the foam grip keeping it pres-teen and clean.

The self fusing silicone tape works great for me as well. No residue and holds very well yet very easy to remove. Also works for temporary strain relief on headphone chord if damaged in field. Great stuff and some is even extreme duty military grade.

I have been using the cable clips from White's also, they work great for me.

X2 on the self fusing tape..I get some at work that holds up for years in extreme tempatures and direct sunlight. Don't need to cut it to remove or glue anything.

Keith, dont know if you know a heat shrink removal trick that works well....just score the shrink with a sharp blade then reheat the shrink......it will split right on the score line.
