More to come, but suffice to say that this is the rarest silver coin that I've ever dug, or ever seen dug in my detecting trips:

Dang! Nice find.
Looks like there might be some VF details hidden under that tarnish..
Might be worth sending that one in to PCGS for restoration..

Thanks Bryan! It does have nice details under the dirt and tarnish, and that's my dilemma - leave it uncleaned w/environmental damage OR clean it and have a more attractive looking coin that's now "cleaned w/environmental damage", it's a one way ticket. I don't have plans to sell it, so I may just clean it, but then again.

Tom this is a new site that we've been researching for a while, a stage stop lost to time in the middle of the desert. We suspect it's never seen a detector, and that it's holding a lot more coins and relics. Cannot wait to go back!

I love this hobby, finds like this make all the research, hard work, and times you got skunked redeemed.

That is possible, because the soil at this site has heavy alkali which definitely causes the R2 to have reduced depth, and I suspect the Equinox in multi mode will have no issues cutting through that mineralization. Can't wait to test one out there.

Brian, that was a fun trip. Congratz on the coin. Well deserved. I got 6 coins , but would gladly trade all of them for your 1 coin (wanna trade ??) And the 3rd friend on the trip got a seated dime and 2 IH's. Fun site !

2 seated quarters, 1 seated dime, 1 barber dime, 1 bufallo, and a mystery coin. Mine are still taking a series of ezest bath rotations. Will post in the coming days.

Also the 2nd site we hit on this trip, we still have to unpack that. Some of that stuff needs item ID's from experts here to hopefullly chime in on. I haven't even un-packed that stuff yet. You keep bugging me with side research on other sites. I can't get any work done ! haha

Thanks Tom, you share my sentiments exactly. Also given the context of the site, makes for an extra special find.

You were definitely getting a lot better depth at this site then I was with the R2. I probably should've taken the Impact out one day with the 11" DD on it. Next trip if we don't have the Equonox yet, I'll force myself to use the Impact and large coil there. The iron's not actually that bad and you did exceptionally well with the large Explorer coil and get some deep coins that my RC26 10"x5.5" coil on the R2 wasn't getting. I think between the larger coil on the Explorer and the explorers simultaneous multifrequency operation that cuts through that mineralization like butter, you had the advantage at that site. Notice when I ran my Imact with the 11" DD and 20kHz, I think I spanked you at the other site.

I was excited when I dug it, and then even more so about 60 seconds later when Tom looked it up on PCGS and we discovered how rare of a coin that it is, talk about a motivator!!

Yes. At that site, iron-see-through did NOT seem to be primary need. Seemed that depth was needed. Some of those targets I got were just deeep whispers by the time I started.

But who knows ? An iron-see-through-around trick might also have lent you targets, that I couldn't hear. And a little coil is nice for ability to poke under bushes for further-reach. We will just have to employ an arsenal of both, as our progress moves on at this site. I can think of some parts of the site where I heard the noise of iron. But other parts (like at the southern end ) were "wide-open" with targets sparsed out. In those area, I believe a large coil is better. Both for coverage, and for depth.

The iron really isn't bad there (which I find a bit odd), most of the trouble I experienced was large iron wagon parts, tools, and seems like someone blew up a cast iron stove in one area.

Something tells me we won't be able to wait for the Equinox before returning smiling smiley
