Gold discovered - millions of tons of it

Sadly, not nearby

Pretty interesting stuff. The key point is this is the first explanation of how heavy elements are created and dispersed in the universe - only to consolidate and concentrate in planetary bodies - where, if we’re luck we can occasionally find it.

I’m reminded of a bumper sticker I saw years ago here in Pheonix at a mining equipment dealers parking lot -

“Earth first
We’ll mine the planets later”

Rick,
Interesting article. The only memorable bumper sticker I remember in the Phoenix area was just before the last election "We're Screwed!"

Just stand outside with a bucket and get the gold as it falls. Just watch your head.

Question- If this collision is 130 million light years away from Earth, we know it took place 130 million years ago and the light just reached Earth. Does using these powerful telescopes to capture this cosmic event, bring it closer in time/distance? Or does the light still take 130 million years to reach the scope? My brain hurts.

Just one teaspoon of a neutron star weighs billions of tons. Tough to imagine.

It still takes 130 million years. The telescope is just collecting the light, magnifying and focusing it.

Thanks Porschse, thinking about it, if it were what I thought, we could possibly see it happen if the scopes were powerful enough. The telescope is not a time travel instrument.
