Gold ring weights I.D. ?
April 15, 2018 07:00PM
Anyone know how many grams maximum a Gold ring stays in the foil range before it moves into pull tab range? 14kt We are talking. For instance would a Mans 14kt. Wedding band stay in Foil range? I know foil is Hot range for Gold. I only have a couple Gold rings to test. Both are small and read Foil on My 3 units.

Harold,
This link here has some data where if studied some conclusions might could be drawn.

Wish more models detector data was available her, but oh well.
Unfortunately the pics aren't available. But the weights and karat of gold is listed.

Wish it were as simple as weight. Verious metal combination on the Nox really can move it up or down the scale of digits.... density and size too.

No perfect science, But seems from chart most 14kt.bands under 3 grams Hit in Foil range. I know You miss a lot but if Only dig foil could down size the odds.

So far ive got a heck of a foil ball testing that. Its not proven out yet and im on the beach lol. The Nox is kind of a different animal...... some gold falls lower and some higher than i would have expected. Friend got a 1.66 gram 14K band......... it rang in 12 digit. Thats just under a nickel at 13. Foil to me on the Nox should read 6 and under with 6 being those round juice tops.

Harold, 14kt jumps up to Nickel, then into the square tab range real fast. Not the new round square tabs that read as nickels, I mean the old square tabs range above the round tabs. Like the 40s and low 50s on the F75 disc range. 10k yellow stays in the foil range a long time. 14k and 18k white gold stays in the foil range a long time. But 14kt yellow gold moves up the conductive scale real fast as weight increases.

All depends on what metal gold ring is mixed with....however foil is the hotspot for sure for gold rings...

Water hunting over the years, mostly where adults tend to play, I have found somewhere near a 50/50 split in finds above and below the nickel range is typical. That's mostly 14K yellow bands. Loved it when they started making those comfort fit bands that slide off easily.

It's Funny in almost 20 years of digging Nickel signals not one has been a Gold ring?
Re: Gold ring weights I.D. ?

Harold, I've dug several gold rings that id'ed like a nickel. Most memorial was a nice men's 18KT White Gold wedding band with a small diamond I found while prototyping the ETPro. That was a nice ring. Brought a good price too.

The challenge has always been having a detector that hit on the smaller gold in the sand or dirt. I believe Tom discussed his thoughts on just how many women's rings maybe lost....and just not recovered especially using multi freq. We just dont get much depth on those foil ones. I keep hoping the Nox might give us a bit more depth..... not so yet for me any way. I found a 1.3 gram 18k earring recently. .... 4"down in the salt water....on the CTX air test 1/2". It was not a closed loop. Its just not simple when it comes to gold.

I was just tryin' to lower the odds as in a Park setting You just can't dig it all. You will be on Your knees all day or dig so many holes You will be asked to leave.
So going after foil signals seems to be a good trade off.

I have dug a couple gold ones that were in the nickel range. I have also dug a couple larger gold rings that were in the screwcap/zinc penny range: a 10k class ring and 14k signet ring. Both were well over a size 12.

I don't really do the park, sports fields, or tot lot thing though, so my jewelry hunting is limited to beach hunting (mostly freshwater) and just happen chance...yards, etc. Freshwater beaches around here are being taken over by stainless and tungsten rings instead of precious metals. I think a lot of it is due to marriages not meaning the same as it did 60+ yrs ago. Now, they are lucky to last 2 to 5 yrs and so they just don't get expensive jewelry. They'd rather spend $900 on a cell phone and $25 for a ring.

Harold,
Wonder if the same pieces of jewelry in the link above I posted was tested with Equinox.
What would we see?

I know you like Etrac.
But for hunting gold jewelry, the way it IDs not as good as Equinox.
Why?
Foil will read 12-01 on Etrac and based on the data in link above so will some gold jewelry smaller sized.
On Equinox, the foil pieces odds are they wil, read 1 and 2.

The gold ring area is more cmlressed on Nox, yet the foil reads real low.
So in a park, if I just dig signals using Nox reading 6-15, I won't dig as much junk as you will with Etrac having to dig 01 conductive signals through say 16.

Odds wise Equinox user digging signals of 11,12 and 13 will definitely dig some nickels and will definitely dig some gold rings.

So even though Nox uses smaller span conductive wise 1-40, and Etrac or CTX 1-50, for gold rings the Nox is the odds on favorite to dig rings and not dig the junk. And this doesn't even talk about possible depth differences between the 2 units. Actually if we assume the are the same, which is not the case. Nox is deeper IMO.

So for the parks that have been hit hard with fbs units and lots of the higher conductive coins dug. A user may take a Equinox and go sniff out the rings and nickels.

Yes I have seen where folks are saying, yeah the reason Nox is finding gold rings is because folks are indeed digging. Very true but the ID system as far as how it corresponds is telling folks to dig. Not a bad thing.

Yes I only found one Gold ring with the Etrac. But it was a cool Mason 14kt. Gold ring from the roaring
20s at a old picnic grove that read in Foil area. Was not a typical honker ring but more like a Pinky ring with a small diamond chip. My Dad was a Mason for years so a cool find to Me.
I was thinking more on the Golden uMax I picked up last Year. I have narrow notch set where all tabs are ignored but a small 14 kt Ring still comes through. Some foil too but good set up to use to check the 2 lower tones when I get one as like to use zero disc.

Harold...... depth is the issue missing those smalls. Advantage for parks over say my beaches........ hard dirt. Personally...... lets say on a Nox hunting a park..... id be looking at the 4 to 12 digit range of gold. On an ET/CTX.... i believe its a time waster looking at the 12-01 in a park. better odds again 12-04 to just below a pull tab. I think gold in the 01 will not be easily found if at all with those machines.

This discussion made me think of a fascinating "chart" that my friend Bill Watson put together
for our metal detecting club a couple of years ago. He tested the VDI of over 50 different
gold rings he had found in recent years, using both a White's and a Minelab detector.

He shows the White's VDI down the left hand side and the Minelab VDI down the right side.

Across the bottom is the weight of the ring, in grams. In the center of the chart is a nickel.
So all the rings below the nickel have a VDI below a nickel. Bill figures that is about 60 percent
of the total rings. He has also marked which rings are 10K, 14K, 18K, etc. You'll have to zoom
in a little to see the details. Sorry the photo isn't clearer but I used the only camera I had
available at the time.

In case it isn't obvious, Bill actually pushed each ring into the cardboard in order to show
where it belonged on the chart. It was a great idea and took him a lot of work to create.
(Thanks again, Bill!)

Here's the chart:

Re: Gold ring weights I.D. ?

The Etrac likely by putting odds in meter reading a better men's gold ring selector for digging.
The Equinox a better women's ring selector by id as far as putting odds.

Etrac users would be digging 17-24 id targets for the men's rings. Dodging tabs.

Equinox user would be digging 8-13, and dodge a lot of rings pulls with tabs attached.

But odds are more women lost rings vs men.

Some ring FBS readings ...

There are some apparent TID groups that cluster based on metal purity and/or thickness but there is also a great deal of variability. A quick check of Fe/CO numbers shows some TID zones that are likely to be rings (or silver coins) but most rings are right in with coins and most non-ferrous junk metal. It's always a pleasant surprise when that foil wrapper signal turns out to be a gold ring.

You raised my eyebrows with Bills chart.........thats pretty accurate with where rings found with the Xcal and CTX would fall. My results were very close and i think i mentioned to someone looks like the Nox would be hitting from digit 1 to 23 for the normally found jewelry. Dont envy someone trying to cherry pick a park for gold.

Outstanding list, worth spending some time by all detectorists to study.

All that's missing is weights for most items. That would make the list even more amazing!

What I got from that list is that jewelry can come up from foil to coin range on any detector. If you disc out anything, you run the risk of missing some jewelry.

Daniel...... you got it right. On the Nox..... my testing shows it from 1 to 23. Realizing..... most all my stuff is from BBS/FBS detectors..... and wheres a penny.... 21.
