Fun off topic: Favorite food and food places

You'll have to excuse me here. I'm in the middle of 21 consecutive 12 hour midnight shifts at work so I am going stir crazy. This topic came up on another forum I go to and we've all had a good read out of it.

If you were to recommend one local place to eat and one place away from home to eat your favorite meal, what places would they be and what dish?

I am in southeast TN. Locally, if I were to tell somebody "while you are here, you have to stop and eat at this place" it would be a place in down town Chattanooga called Beas Restaurant. Beas is family ran and operated, and specializes in southern home cooked meals. You go in, and the tables are all large "lazy Susan" tables...basically the top is round and rotates. You sit around the rotating table and the servers bring out the food and put it on the tables. It's like a reverse food bar with all fresh stuff. Their speciality is fried chicken and or chicken and dumplins. I guarantee you'll find no better fried chicken in Tennessee. Their other sides are pretty good too. It's just a hole in the wall place in the ghetto side of Chattanooga but if you go during lunch, you will have no troubles.

Away from home, there are a couple places in Missouri and Alabama called Lamberts. They are known for throwing rolls but the food is really good. It's more of a tourist place now but extremely good food. If you leave hungry, it's your own fault. As a bonus, I've eaten at some high dollar steak places...suit and tie kinda places. But there's one place I will go for a good steak dinner...and I've often contemplated driving the 7 hrs one way, to go get one. It's called Big Mike's Steakhouse in Alabama. Their ribeye is PHENOMENAL. If I could have my choice for a last meal...that would be it, hands down.

How bout yall? Where are you from and where & what would you recommend to people?

Memphis has some of the best barbecue around and no shortage of good places in the area to get it. For ribs, though, I, like many, am pretty partial to the Rendezvous. Simply the best dry ribs around.

For out of town places, hands down, Barbara Jeans, on ST Simon's Island, Ga. Good down home type of cooking, but their shrimp and grits are to kill for. And you won't go away hungry. Interesting topic! HH jim tn

I went vegetarian about 15 years ago.........but the best burger (and last) was at Dunleavy's on Sullivan's Island, SC. It is called the Carolina Burger......angus beef, slaw, and chili......... I can taste it now......

Locally only 3 choices: McDonald's,Sonic,or Subway, LOL No kidding.

Out of town: Mosca's hwy. 4137 Hwy.90W out of New Orleans. They invented Oyster Mosca which is copied through out southern La.,but Never duplicated.

Tony’s on I75 birch run mi. Home of the giant steak, pizza cheese and mushroom steak sandwich. World famous. Was even mentioned in an episode of the 1970s tv series M. A. S. H. by clinger. He’s from there. Nothing like it anywhere!

5th/3rd ball park here in Grand Rapids mi. As shown on an episode of Man vs food = a giant 5lb burger! Bet you can’t eat the whole thing

Fine dining for authentic Italian food = Salvatore’s here in GR. They make linguine that’s to die for!

In Chicagoland the Italian Beef sandwich and Pizza is king. I would recommend Bouna beef or Portillo's as far as well known places for Italian Beef. And for Pizza Aurelios. They started franchising some of these so might have one near You but they all started in Chicago. The food is so good here don't go out of state much to eat.

Local food here in Albuquerque....I dunno....quite a few to pick from that are pretty good. Probably for Mexican food my local favorite is Los Cuates although Sadies is a very close runner up. Depends on what kind of Salsa you like that makes the difference. There is a bunch of good ones but those two are very good. Also, If you are a vegetarian, Los Cuates makes some very good portobello fajitas, although the Church Street Cafe in Old Town makes some very good ones, too. Los Cuates is cheaper though.

I fish a lot in Northern New Mexico and the lake I'm at picks the food, although I have been known to drive out of my way for a certain dish. Dinner is usually in Durango Colorado at Tequila's or in Pagosa Springs Colorado at the Junction. Depends if I'm fishing Navajo Lake or Heron Lake as to which is closer and where we wind up.

Tequila's in Durango has the best Chili Rellenos I've ever eaten, anywhere. They use Poblano Chili instead of the normal Anaheim Chili and they are super good. Super Good.

The Junction in Pagosa Springs for the Country Fried Steak. Its pretty good, and affordable and we almost always have dinner there if we are fishing Heron Lake. My wife and I were vegetarians for 20 years until about the last year and a half. Mostly still are when we eat at home but we've gotten to where we eat meat when we eat out or travel just because the menu got so boring.

Oh.....can't forget this little gem....Taos has this little Chinese restaurant called Hunan's and the #1 Beef House Special is very good and worth the 1-1/2 hour drive north to eat there on a Sunday afternoon drive. Take the High Road to Taos, mess around when we get there, eat dinner at Hunan's and take the low road back to Albuquerque and call it a very good day.

Can't decide which I like best---m.d.ing or food!-------There's a little place down in Port Isabelle, TX--nothing fancy--but the fish plates they put out----OH MY!!!----We wintered down there one year several yrs. ago & ate there often.-----I can't remember the name of the place---but---if I ever get back down there I think I can remember how to get to it.

I usually avoid restaurants. I only go to them when people talk me into it.

I don't believe in tipping. What a silly tradition that is. Just give me the menu and tell me the price. I'm not paying the waitstaff to bring me my food.

My favorite food is what I cook myself and my own kitchen , at least I know who sneezed on it and what is included.
There are never stray cats around Korean restaurants so I really avoid them and , Mike , you ever looked inside a tamale?

Shoveler, I love Mexican food. Could eat it 24/7. However I'm also a Isaiah 8:20 kind of guy and pork is never on the menu.

We have big tamale making parties here. They ladies put out a big pile of masa in the center of the table and we all sit around and roll up a bunch of beef, or chicken, or my favorite; fresh roasted green chili and cheese, tamales by the dozens. mmm mmm

Come to New Mexico in August and September and smell all the fresh green chili roasting everywhere! Man, that is a smell that says food party! Buy a big box or burlap bag of Hatch Green Chili, take them to the roasters and get them roasted good, then sit around all day and peel and bag em for the freezer so you can have fresh roasted green chili all year long. We didn't do enough last year and are already out. Major bummer I tell you.

Wear gloves though when your peeling them and don't touch your eyes or your private parts. You could burn both of those particular parts off HAHAHA!

in my travels over the years I've found that some of the best tasting food comes from greasy beer joints.

Anyone that's ever been to Traverse City know it's one of the biggest foodie towns in Michigan, but I'm no foodie and never been to any of those places. I'll drive on occasion for Chinese or Asian, but give me a good Bar Burger and beer and I'm happy.

Fresh trout or a good steak grilled and smothered with sauteed morel mushrooms.. Yumm

For me I was a huge "Outback" fan for years and loved the stores in Bradenton & Sarasota Florida - the 'Victoria Filet', bake potato, sour cream & butter & Salad w/blue cheese dressing.
The Florida stores were a cut above the rest and that is what I found in a few different states and I was at the time also in the restaurant business.

Moving away from Florida I missed the "Outback" greatly but getting back to Florida this year I have to say that in my opinion it has past it's sell by date: disappointing. Despite being massively overpriced, a totally different Menu, the food wasn't good.
However, the salad was still good.

However, I found a great place during my vacation and would usually visit nightly - "Monty's in Punta Gorda" - the Service was 'a bit hit and miss' but the food was great!!!

Gus's World Famous Fried Chicken located in Collierville TN. Man, I have dreams at least once week about that chicken.

Hungarian, they also have a place at Poplar and Mendenhall. Not a big chicken fan, so don't know if its as good as the Collierville one or not. HH jim tn

One & Only BBQ in Memphis has the best ribs period. Their BBQ meat is just average though.

I like ribs if cooked right. The prob with most places is they over cook them and advertise "fall off the bone". IMO, if it falls off the bone it is over cooked. There's a little BBQ joint in Englewood, TN that gets it right on this end of the state. The demand for food always over flows their supply. They smoke X amount a day and when it's gone, it's gone. There is often a line of people waiting to get in and if they aren't sold out by 1:30 p.m. it's rare. I'm not big on brisket but I stopped there one day to give it a try cause I'd heard so much good about it. I got a variety meal that had brisket, pulled pork, and a half rack of ribs. My wife loved the ribs and I actually liked their brisket. Only place I've had brisket that I liked. I've not been on the south west end of the state. When it comes to seasonings, I prefer dry rubs over the wet sauces.

When I'm at home, most often times I will cook at home and not go any place. But I like to travel and when on the road, some times the places we visit go hand in hand with finding food that the area is known for and trying it out.

I don't have one favorite food. Probably because as a kid, we had to eat what mom cooked and leave nothing on our plates. If pops left it we could too....he always cleaned his plate with good ole white bread.

I do have a favorite local place to eat and hang out. They have new owners now for a couple/few years and the place is always busy......The Plumbsteadville Inn....Burgers and beer Lobster and Cheer.

The building is from the 1700's, great atmosphere and all the food is delicious. I like their Ceaser Salad, Clams Casino and their Lamb chops. I haven't had everything on the menu though, but I hear no complaints from anyone I go with. They have a piano player and an occasional singer guitar player. Mostly locals around a big circular bar and seems everyone is upbeat, especially on Fridays. Wifey and I may go there tonight for my birthday,.. looking forward to it.

Cheese burger, Countryside Café on Mahan Gap Road, Snow Hill. I'm sure you know the place Daniel.

For you folks in the AZ area: PowerHouse restaurant at Yarnell,AZ. has the Best breakfast I have ever eaten in the US, from every corner and all the fly over country. Right up the mountain from Rich Hill--the famous "Potato Patch".
