“Hi guys ‘n’ girls. Today was that day...a good friend and I eagerly walked out onto our new permission! The first signal was coke, but I thought dig ‘em all and get a feel for the site. Within half an hour, the most beautiful, gold medieval iconographical finger ring lay at the bottom of a 7-8 inch deep hole. Centuries old, but looks like it’s never been worn. Any help on who it depicts would be appreciated. The Virgin Mary? St. Catherine? 1400-1600s? Hundreds of acres of pasture, but there it lay. It’s stunning and I’m very grateful. It’s what it’s all about....right?!

Now for the Treasure Act process.....will I....or won’t I get to keep....!”

Beautiful engraving. I see a staff with a cross at the top. Looks like a woman.

If they take the ring does the museum pay you for the value of it?

Here's a close up.

First off the Treasure Valuation Committee will place a price on its worth as history, if one of a kind or very important for one reason or another then they will place a price upon according to its status, after that it is for museums raise the cash to buy at the price stated.
It' can either work out to be a fair situation or an unfair situation for the finder, many people have been unhappy with the valuations placed in the past.

Great Britain has an excellent system of handling metal detecting as a hobby and a a valuable source of undiscovered cultural history. No. Other country that I know of are so open to the contributions of detectorists while respecting the common law rights of property owners and arrangements that they make with detectorists.

Perfect? No, nothing is.

Ziggy,

Wow! What a gorgeous ring! You didn't find it correct? Matthew was the finder?

From where I'm sitting, it could be 'St.Margaret of Antioch", aka 'Saint Marina'
Possibly 13th Century - around 1222ad, where she was hailed a saint in Oxford.
250 churches in the UK are dedicated to her.
Feast Day - July 17

Even though iconographical rings of this type have been found in the past, this example has rarity value possibly worth £3000 to a valuation committee?

Ahhh! Des has got it.
I saw the dragon/wyvern lying on its back, head pointing up, the cross/sword shoved down its beak, and figured it had to be Saint/Archangel Michael, despite looking feminine. But I forgot it's not just guys that slay dragons [ the Devil], everyone's had a go at it in mythology. Including Saint Margaret.
