How does a forum survive?

Is it by number of post, advertisers, members,etc.

Never gave much thought to it and took them for granted but they are here on the web. Just was wondering.

Who is "they?"

Forums survive by a feeling of "Community". This forum has it's style/community, while others have a different style/community.

They become profitable when that activity translate to advertising in the form of sponsorship or paying ads that remit a fee when viewers click on those ads.

I think this forum rides on NASA Tom's expertise and has coasted a bit as his presence has been reduced of late. Keith Southern and several others keep it productive, but there is always a sense of Tom's presence. This remains my first stop forum surfing, but I think that would change if Tom left. Just my 2 cents, hopefully not post 1982.
