Detector Videossmiling smiley

The only videos that I have ever done have been with a full size dslr. That is fine if it's a family get together, trip, etc but trying to do detecting videos is
not good. Lugging around a big camera in the middle of no-where is crazy. I have done a few but just not working for me. For you folks who shoot
videos, what camera do you use. Do I need a Go-Pro ? Which one ? Will a Hero 3, older model work or do I need all the bells and whistles. I ask because I don't want
to buy something and regret it down the road somewhere. I want to make one purchase and be satisfied with it... Thanks for your help in advance.. Richard

The latest higher end iPhone or Android phones can all do HD or UHD video and are quite good offering optical image stabilization (not digital), macro for those close-ups of your finds, and zoom capabilities if required.

I can tell you one to NOT get. Fuji XP130. I bought it to go into the water with. It does great video, don't get me wrong. The problem is, the stock battery is 750 MaH and in 1080p video mode, it lasts about 5 to 8 minutes. There are aftermarket batteries with higher capacity. I bought some of those but it only stretched it to around 12 mins. The best reviewed "all terrain" camera out today is the Olympus TG5. I thought about buying one but happened up on a GoPro Hero 5 black with a bunch of accessories for $150. It should be here any day. Otherwise on land, I use my phone.

SJCam 4000 -

Same as Go Pro but comes with a lot of free accessories for mounting
Accessories are compatible with Go Pros and vice versa
Side by side performance against a Go Pro, I prefer the SJCam
Price - Cheap, so if you lose it in the field or it gets damaged, no biggy

Also the Kodak ZX5 are a good sport cam as well

Good luck

Well I just bought a go pro.
You folks better get ready. Lol

We’ll see if I like to do or not.

Not looking to win any academy awards, instead share some info.
Maybe even some gee whiz moments with detectors.

You could get by for sure with an older GoPro, and Craigslist is usually full of them. The GoPro Hero 5 featured voice commands, so you can start your camera and stop hands free. Image stabilization got really good with the Hero 5, and GoPro knocked it out of the park with the Hero 6. The Hero 7 just leaked, so soon it will be for sale and Hero 6 prices will drop.

I’ve tried cheaper action cams, and all of them had something frustrating about them. The Hero 6 is my daily driver now, and its so good I’m most definitely out of the upgrade cycle unless it fails.

Hero 5 is my choice but have not tried the 6 yet.

They are almost the same, image quality got a minor tweak, barely noticeable.

The only significant change is the image stabilization on the Hero 6 got a major update. It’s almost better than a gimbal, and depending on what one is filming worth the extra $100 over the 5.

Try to get a GoPro 6 - it has a view screen so you can see what you're filming.
I have an original HERO that doesn't have a screen and its difficult to "frame" a shot so the video might look out of shot or something?
I only use it now for underwater shots say if I'm filming a waterproof probe pin pointer!

The only drawback about GoPro's is, its difficult to set them up on your detector so it doesn't get in the way, fall off or otherwise become a nuisance.
But if you can get it on there and it can see the detector screen and capture "sounds & target ID numbers", then that's a bonus.

You could always fit it onto a small tripod and just hand carry it and set it down looking into holes as you dig - that's what I tend to do with my other camcorders.
I use a couple of Canon and Sony camcorders, small like the "Legria" series.

S'funny but a friend recommended an "Olympus Tough" camera recently and watching 'nuggettnoggin's video recently (a link on here by Ghound) didn't he actually find one of them!"

I thought about the Hero 5 but with the Hero 7 coming out this month, hopefully the 6 will drop in price significantly.. Thanks so much to everyone.. Richard

You can get the screen in and be completely out of the way with a shoulder mount. I tried 5 of them before settling on the Stuntman, it was the most stable but on the pricy side.

Historically it’s been a $100 drop, with some retailers throwing in freebies also like memory cards or the WiFi remote. So factor in $299 with some free stuff depending.

I use what dirtfishing reccomended on his channel and mentioned above.
Kodak zx5 [rover.ebay.com]
And 11 inch magical arm [www.amazon.com]

Your up and running for $50!

It’s what I use to film all my detecting videos. Rugged, water proof, good video quality.

Looked for the GoPro 7 in a few stores yesterday - not available - they had 5's and 6's.
It's not Online either in my favorite NY camera store of two letters!

What I did see and was of interest were some 'KAISER BAS' Action cams, the X1,2,3,4 and 5.
To get the best out of them they can pair with your Smartphone. They can be set up via the Menu on their phone app. However, I wouldn't like to be 'deep in the woods' with an action cam in one hand along with a phone and a detector and digger in the other!

But, the things are small enough to handle and film the goings on?

One other thing to remember and it can ruin detecting videos is WIND NOISE - so precautions should be taken to try to minimise that either by using a specially made 'microphone windjammer cover' or another mic plugged directly in the camera also with a mic cover. If I start watching a video and bad wind noise ruins the production, I quit and go onto the one that doesn't have it.
But with that kind of a set-up you are getting into the realms of 'big' awkward camera rigs.

Once u get the camera..... then comes what program to edit....time consuming.

The 7 isn't out yet, it just leaked, and is expected to be announced officially and on shelves towards the end of the month if they follow their other release schedules.

Up to the GoPro Hero 4, there was only a single microphone, so you could put the usual fuzzy wind muff over the microphone to get rid of the wind noise. Starting with the Hero 5, they put multiple microphones all over the camera, in places you can't get wind muffs when mounted. So now you have to use a foam sock over it. Here is an example: [www.ebay.com]

Just a heads up, people recently discovered that the GoPro Hero 2018, which costs $199, is actually a GoPro Hero 5 Black with dumbed down firmware. You can load the Hero 5 Black firmware on yourself and have a fully featured Hero 5 Black for $199, which is a super good deal.
