I wonder how the tone will be at the edge of detection in mixed mode. It seems to me it might be a little hard to tell iron from low conductors. That bell tone on the end might be hard to hear with a lot of noise like waves crashing. Definitely will need to mess around with modes to see what works best.

Tnss how is the audio modulation?
Can you get a sense of depth at all through the audio?

What about the pinpoint function and depth meter if it has any form of one at all..

Thanks for taking the time to put up the videos.

Will show Bryan.
Have a few other things to show.
May be tomorrow and I post vids showing, giving clues.

The most helpful thing I've found for depth indication is the number generated by the pinpoint. Instead of a guestimate of distance it is a signal strength rating. The physics of it all is that several variables go into the process in a perspective- big far and small close seem the same. Counter intuitively, the bigger the number the shallower the target.

It's been ten+ years since I ran one, but I kind of seem to recall the pinpointing on the Coin$trike working like that. It was funky, but deadly accurate once you gelled with it's operation.

Yep, was kind of hard to get used to, but I have found after almost 125 hours of beach use the pin point is very accurate and the biger the number the shallower the target.

For Tex and other taller folks.
Detector length.
Here below detector is fully extended in last hole. Ruler is flush with bottom with coil cover ON. Folks maybe can judge distance at hand grip to see if it will fit them.

I have to admit that I for one don’t understand all I am hearing on your videos. The tones sometimes seem counterintuitive to what I’m thinking is a good target tone, and at other times there’s is no tone, so I’m confused by the sounds somewhat... don’t know why, but I Was thinking it was going to have a bing/bong (good, iron) type sound like the Aquasound. More videos and/or time with the machine will probably fix the confusion .... assumed that those ‘wood block’ type sounds when you have sweep over good (or accepted) targets were favorable, no? Better understanding of what tones mean and another view will cement the concepts for me. Also tnss, can you tell me if the mix mode comes out in stereo with a.m. on one side and disc on the other, like (if memory serves), the Nauty, or is it mono in both phones? TIA

Gary see this post here by Mr Dankowski....
I placed in bold what he says addressing your question.
I have never operated Nautilus detector. I will listen in detail some tomorrow, and will come back here and post.

Re: ON THE HORIZON
December 18, 2018 02:38AM
After watching those videos I'm a little confused about some of the tones as well. I can see why the detector is not meant for carpets of nails. I'm liking the all metal mode sounds the best but from what I gather that's going to require looking at the numbers on the screen all the time. Disc mode appears too quiet, that could change with headphones though. I'm totally confused with mixed mode, some of the iron tones sound like the low conductor tones to me. I now see why this is not for a person new to detecting.
Re: ON THE HORIZON
December 18, 2018 02:56AM
Okay, here is what I am going to do tomorrow. I’ll do a video showing only ferrous being swept. Different sizes of ferrous. Smaller and medium sized only. About a 3 minute vid. No nonferous period. Then I will do another vid later with some ferrous mixed in with nonferrous. Like gold rings, tabs pull rings. Maybe this will help.

Some preliminary thoughts I have on this detector.
The folks behind Seems geared for gold!!
ID of rings seems stays at 12 ID or lower ( super high percentage)
I haven’t showed video with bottlecaps yet.
I have tested on some.
Not to turn this post into a Equinox basher. But so far looks like (assuming Tarsacci IDs even close to ideal to pretty good depths in salt water and salt sand. User of Tarsacci will be digging few bottle caps in search of gold rings vs Equinox runner. (Both basing their digging/recovery solely on ID presented in meter).
The disc circuit with Tarsacci is definitley out of the norm for me. Almost like detector is always in AM. If this makes sense. Most gold rings seem like they will read single digits ID.

Re: ON THE HORIZON
December 18, 2018 02:58AM
On video...……………….. the Mixed Mode sounds weird.
Without headphones...…. the Mixed Mode sounds weird.

Combine both...…. and it sounds horrible.

It 'might' be able to be captured on video...…… just enough to understand...…… if (whilst in Mixed Mode) you wave a nail by the coil...… then a medium conductor (like a nickel) by the coil…… then a high conductor by the coil. What you will hear is: You will ALWAYS hear the 'all-metal' tone (regardless of Disc setting). You will also hear:
With the iron low conductor.. you ALSO hear the low-tone.
With a medium conductor..... you ALSO hear the mid-tone.
With a high conductor...…… you ALSO hear the high-tone.

When you increase Disc...… you will ALWAYS retain the 'all-metal' tone; yet, you will now Disc out the according (low, mid, or high) tone. . . . . dictated by Disc setting.
Re: ON THE HORIZON
December 18, 2018 03:06AM
I will do video inside building tomorrow (barn) with no electronics to may amplify the sound quality somewhat.
The detector’s meter will likely not be able to be seen. I will narrate as I sweep whatever.

Btw, my running AKA Sorex and MFT units previously has helped me understand the audio of this detector better/faster imo. Meaning Tarsacci audio doesn’t sound so foreign to me.

I won’t show tomorrow. But some thing to keep in mind. Notice tone break assigned is 15. Low conductor vs high conductor. So nonferous reading say 14-17 I.D wise can sound off a bit differently. Coil position/sweep speed depending a target such as this could sound different between sweeps.

Thanks for the video's TNSS. Tom said the tones are different. From just what I have heard it shouldn't be a problem understanding it. Just got to get it to the sand. The disc seems spot on for getting out iron if you wish or hear it in mix mode. Normally Fed Ex is fast but says it will be late Friday for delivery and with batteries to charge may be Sunday before I can get a run on the beaches. All the way from west to east coast. So just checked tracking number and it sat for 3 days before leaving where it was checked in. Must be on the we will take if we go that way route.

I certainly will be watching for your feedback using unit on beach. I wished I lived near salt water beach. It is going to be hard to really get any real good you tube vids on beach with detector in action due to ambient noise. I don’t know enough about go pro cameras and mikes, Maybe external mike would help. But I think enough stories ( with similar themes) will eventually tell us something as far as just how good, mediocre or bad this detector performs in salt environment.

TNSS - Thanks for the videos. Any idea when we might see a vid of it in the field? Feed that beast smiling smiley

You're not too far from the beach. Dad and I drove down to Pensacola and Orange Beach for just a days fishing trip, and then back home. I even got some detecting in after I got down there. It was only a 7 hour drive for us to get down there. I drove the whole way there and back. Probably another hour or two for you but that's still an easy drive.

I use to drive non stop from here to Biloxi Ms lots of times. All 582 miles worth. Granted Mobile Al closer by about 65 miles.

Tomorrow I’ll try to get into the field. Guess I had better since this RAIN has stopped. Looks like another deluge coming Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
Re: ON THE HORIZON

125 hours on the beach...... what are you finding? I ask that because if you can detect an 8 gram 14K ring at about 21" then id say you are way beyond what most are digging targets at out there. How about a picture of a PILE of targets? Id like to see what you are digging up. Anyone got one here in Fl yet? I know our sands pretty deep...... id like to know whats down there....... or NOT. Sometimes ..... its just not there to get.

Cliff... you need one of these babies...... find yourself one of those St Pete holes full of bottle caps and let me know lol. I cant even get down to the bottle caps here......... now thats bad.

Thanks, missed that, and it answers the question. It’s stereo, so you have each mode separated in your ears. You get used to that easily and it’s quite useful but can definitely bring on audio fatigue faster than a normal single mode tone.
It will be easier to understand the tones once you start using it as you would in field. But I think what you’re doing, that is testing the modes, frequencies and responses in a test environment initially is the best way to lessen the learning curve and get to know your detector.

Correct Gary. I do this with all new to me units. I did make one run in the wild Sunday, got rained out. Too short of run to really to makes comments on. I received this detector mid Saturday afternooon. So only had a couple days really. And since the way this unit was described here in this thread by NASA-Tom, I thought it would be prudent to give some extra time testing before I go more into the wild using. One setting on top of the ground testing falls short I think is the threshold setting. Plan to get out some today in the wild as well as make hopefully a better acoustically sounding video of the mixed mode in use. May turn out to be really an audio. May see if I can put go pro near ear cup and just narrate by talking loudly what I am sweeping. Deer season still open here, so I am site limited where I can go currently.
Re: ON THE HORIZON

Tom,
How would this machine perform in the gold fields? 8 grams (gold) at +-21 inches would best a GPX/GPZ with a large coil. As a nugget shooter, I've been following this thread with great interest. No carpets of nails in the gold fields just mineralization to deal with.

Perhaps it is being tested there? If so, anything you can report? If not yet being tested in the GFs, how do you believe it would do? Thanks!

Dean
Re: ON THE HORIZON
December 18, 2018 02:38PM
Detector was never designed for the gold fields; subsequently, ...…… it has not been tested in this type of environment. However; ….. it may fair well there...…,,,,,,, due to it's bad-mineral handling abilities. I know some folks plan on bringing it there. It would not be my choice for the gold fields; yet, (due to: lack of gold field testing) …. my thoughts are (speculatively) unfounded.

Re: ON THE HORIZON

Audio is much more intelligible in your 'audio only' youtube video. I could tell that you have iron Disc'd out...…. as...…………... we are only hearing the 'all-metal' tone of the nail. If the nail was not Disc'd out...… you would then hear the all-metal tone AND the low-tone. (((By virtue of Disc'ing out the nail...… the low-tone is then silenced/Disc'd))).

Thanks TNSS.... for your efforts. In fact...… the youtube with ONLY the audio...… is easier to concentrate/focus/understand...…. in this particular/specific case.
Re: ON THE HORIZON
December 18, 2018 03:23PM
Is it listed as to how deep it will go and still be warranted or is it not sold as waterproof? It might see rain or a splash from my use. Never got deeper than calf with the Equinox. The iron tone is not very low but still lower than the other tones so should be able to pick out good targets.
