French gendarmes say workers paid to demolish an uninhabited house in Brittany made an unexpected discovery in the cellar — 600 gold coins.

The Pont-Aven gendarmerie said the workers discovered the coins after rattling a mysterious, shell-shaped container.

They were Belgian, dated 1870, and bore the face of the then-reigning king of Belgium, Leopold II.

The gendarmerie said the workers reported the discovery and the treasure has since been put under lock and key until more information is unearthed about its provenance.

Local media reports the hoard could be worth 100,000 euros ($155,000).

Similar coins bearing the face of Leopold II have been discovered in other parts of Europe.

In 2015, amateur archaeologists discovered a hoard of gold in northern Germany dating back to the Belgian monarch's reign.

The gold coins, initially estimated to be worth more than $65,000, were found underneath a tree near Lueneburg.

The fact the coins were buried suggested they had been stolen, according to a local archaeologist.

Those demo boys should get to keep a few of the coins for their honesty....a reward.

Treasure is where you find it......locally an estate goods bought....flintlock in cellar was worth double the initial cost...house bought and cleaning cellar book dropped and out came 50 dollar bill...rest of books checked and more than initial house cost was found ...while working a theft while owners slept upstairs found out they had an old army locker in bedroom with approx. 60 thousand in it..owner said they didn't trust banks...so one never knows...

Exactly what I was thinking. Archies come up with the craziest notions. Since when does the fact of a goodie buried, "suggest stolen" ? People have been known to bury their goods (well-earned & honest-living $$ ) for all of history. Since when does this suggest "stolen" ?

I have seen surmisings by archaeologists before , that are as silly as this. Like attributing ancient objects to "religious rituals", when I'm thinking : "Why can't it be a simple decoration?"

From what I’ve read and seen people post about,some archaeologists seem to be a little pretentious,like THEY have that title so THEY have the last word on a situation or “artifact”,even though it may well be a “pulled this outta my backside” guess. Like everything else,people form bad opinions of them when the few idiots seem to be holding the mic a lot.

even days after banks people didn't trust banks after strings of bank failures. Popular hiding place was a post hole "bank". It was a cache buried near a fence post that could be seen from the main room in a house or cabin through a window so they could notice if anyone was messing around in that area.
so if you are hunting old home sites and can determine the cabin layout then look for fence post depressions within site of the cabin or home.

also miners buried their gold every night to keep from being robbed until they got to the nearest civilized outpost to spend or bank their gold.
