Whites 4900, mid ‘80’s - my right forearm tendons haven’t been right since - terrible ergonomics - whipping back and forth for the 4-filter ID with that handle parallel to the coil. On the other hand, I have a box of nice finds form Norway where we were at the time.

Now I have a new (to me) 6000 Pro XL. Back tho the old four-filter whip, but with a nice ergonomic (if somewhat heavy) set up. Can’t wait o put my Bigfoot on it and compare to my IDX Pro (modded).

I started in '67 with a detector that I built myself, and then revised it with the help of my dad. The first detector I bought was a Jetco Treasure Hawk, then quickly upgraded to a White's Goldmaster 66TR.

1972 I bought a kit and put it together. Don't remember what it was called. Then latter in 1972 I bought a Compass 77b Professional. The Compass then got me hooked on metal detecting.

Technically, the first was brand new 1972 Jetco Mustang BFO.
But the only coin I 'found' with it was a dime on top of the ground, and I saw it pass by through the BFO loop rather than hearing anything.

Then immediately bought a Radio Shack TR kit detector, and built it. Not sure of model#, but it was brown with a chrome handle and either one or two knobs.
Found lots of junk, but with no discrimination at all, quickly lost interest.

First real detector was new 1974 A.H. Pro. First real discriminator to eliminate pull tabs.
I loved that thing. Lived off of what I found with it for a couple of years...and hooked me for life.

Still have it, and a backup, in storage.

Funny side story;
Years later I found out that first dime I found on top of the ground was actually planted by my wife, who was tired of waiting for me to find something!

Detectron Gremlin in '75. I saved all summer and had My Mom drive Me hour away to nearest dealer. I dreamed of finding big treasure like I saw in the magazines. But after a month of not much but a penny on top of the ground lost interest and in the closet it went. Flash forward to '98 and bought a Whites XLT which I found My first Silver coin a 1918s Merc. been hooked ever since.

Compass 94-IB bought brand new from Treasure Land in Mt. Clemens, MI in 1972 for $129.95, plus tax, if my memory serves. An awful lot of money at the time, for something so frivolous...

Hello everyone.......In 1978 I bought my first real detector, a Garrett Deep-seeker ADS, it ran at 5.5 Khz and it was a big heavy beast of a detector, it went through batteries like they were free!
You needed to be a young guy with good arms to swing that sucker all day! I ran it until I got me a White's 6000 series 2 in the early 1980's.
Happy hunting.......jerryinin

Same here. Mine was 4001 model. "Tripped" over and old iron stirrup about 2'' down, and been hooked ever since. I didn't even know what discrimination was that first hunt.
