What’s up with the BANDIDO uMax?
April 09, 2019 04:33AM
Seems like a lot of guys still swear by this machine and is still high demand on eBay.
Ive got one but don’t really use it, saving it for my daughter. She’s happy w her Compadre, says the BANDIDO has too many knobs! LOL I know they handle well in iron and pack a lot of power in that tiny box. Just curious with what the users take is....

Really, I was not impressed with the one I had. Don't know what all the fuss was about. I liked the Eldorado umax much better. And then again thought the Outlaw was a bit better yet, just hated that skunky 3 position pinpoint tuning switch, which I think was Tesoros blunder. Had it been left as a retune, pinpoint switch only, it would have made the difference in popularity and sales.

DeepTech Vista X with 3 search coils.
Works for me

For the money the Bandido Umax isnt worth it. Not much more depth even if you have the GB set correctly. The Compadre, Silver Sabre (any one) or Troy x2 is all one needs for fun. Never tried the Golden Umax or Mojove. I think Monte for one, likes the original big box Bandido.

Funny you said that i was talking about it to an archeologist today.......friend of men bought one (new in 1998/9) and used it on the spoil of a MASSIVE car park dug into the city medieval quarter(BORDEAUX FRANCE).Every bip was a good targets 100s of artefacts, the machine paid for itself 20 times.Yes he will probably have found the same thing with a Silver sabre umax, but he had a Bandido 2 umax and still has it......

Thanks for the link tabman, that was one day that guy will never forget for sure!

Personally, if I’m gonna use a Tesoro, I’d choose my Pantera over my Bandido 2 uMax. The Pantera w that 2 tone disc double stack notch knob has a lot more to offer.

Yes I am a big Tone I.D. Guy that's why I prefer the Golden uMax out of the Tesoros I have tried.

Do not confuse the Bandido uMax with the Bandido ll uMax. There is a difference.

yup! outrageous day tabman! use mine for "curb strips" perfect size, lightweight, and packs enough "wallop"to get down 7 or 8"
great mineral toggle that is very effective, well built, and ''short money" fun with the famous "ed 180 circuit" .compadre on steroids.a single tone tesoro will "school ya" pay attention to how it "hits" on targets, and have a blast!

The difference between the Bandido umax and Bandido 2 umax is the threshold knob (on the 2). Using the Threshold one could supertune it for extra depth, but supertuned it doesnt do as well in unmasking. In the end might be better to choose the Vaquero. If you want to hunt in all-metal then models with GB and Threshold are better. The Eldorado umax has the better 180 disc range. As I mentioned previously I have not tried the Golden Umax, however I do own and use a GM King Cobra which is basically a Golden Sabre 2 Plus copy, but the King Cobra is much lighter and has brighter crisper audio. It was modded by Keith Wills with added threshold and GB. Has two tone ID (notched) and runs at 15 kHz. The Tesoro models having tone ID are Golden Sabre 2, Golden Sabre 2 Plus, Golden Umax, Euro Sabre Umax, Royal Sabre, and Pantera. The reason some prefer the big box (pre-umax) models is because they were low gain and better in unmasking in iron. Tesoro models using the 4 pin coils are all high gain. What Tesoro models have BOTH low gain and 180 disc??? The Amigo 2 and Compadre I know do. Maybe Lobo, Pantera, Mojave or Outlaw...not sure. My King Cobra doesnt, but the GM (Gold Mountain) 1650 does and is killer in iron. Also very few Tesoro models running in 15 kHz. Past online posts by Monte shed lots of light on the subject.

The original Golden Sabre was a single tone detector. The Golden Sabre II has two tone I.D. and a favorite of Mike Hillis.

Thanks, yes the original was single tone. The two tone Golden Sabre 2 was 12kHz and the GS-2 PLUS model ran at 15kHz. Good info.

Don’t forget Harold, Mike’s GS2 is modified, he had a ground balance put on it. The GS2 replaced the PANTERA which had a ground.

You can get the GS2 pretty cheap on eBay, usually around $180.00 or less. It’s the PANTERA that’s gonna cost ya, if you can find one...

I briefly owned a Pantera and in My ground the Golden uMax New tone Model is at least 2 inches deeper. But I do have a Hot Golden.

Owned one when they first came out and didn't impress me...I believe the Pantera or Golden Sabre 11 were the best..

I have the Bandido II and used it exclusively in iron infested sites. I purchased a custom 5" loop for it with extra long cable and has been invaluable in that situation. My "new" go to machine now for similar sites is the GoldMaxx Power which does even better.

I am not sure if the Umax version came out before or after the II. Either way a monster in shallow nail sites.

What was once impossible..... is now easy and obvious. BUT.......... if : You don't know...what you don't know........ it continues to appear/look impossible.

Yes Sir, that GMP is a BEAST in iron! Came out in 2003 and can still w the best in the rusty stuff. I’ll tell ya, I love using it in the shallow water w the stock coil.
