I always chuckle when I get trumped in a metal detecting thread...TRUMPED...
Re: The Trump card in metal detecting...

Good video. I know guys (even dealers) who have been "hunting since the 1970s", and who "talk big". Yet if you were to meet the guys in a worked-out-deep park turf duel, here would be the results : Them: 30 clad and some zinc and tabs, zero oldies. The skilled hunter : 5 clad and 10 oldies.

I had this exact scenario play out with one such dealer here. Who rightly pointed out that if I'm passing shallow zinc (in junky blighted turf), that I "might miss a shallow fat men's gold ring". To which I pointed out that : If gold jewelry is someone's goal/objective, then .... WHAT THE HECK IS HE DOING IN JUNKY BLIGHTED TURF ? Why not just simply go to a swimming beach if someone's goal is to angle for gold ??

Thus yes: It's not only the ability to know the sounds of a machine, but also the general hunting strategies of where/when to go as well.

Give the old timer and the rookie a machine that neither of them ever heard of let alone used.....see who comes up with what. Of course, the luck of the walk taken, is a big factor.

I agree though.....It's the actual time spent doing + smarts and understanding. If I get out only eight hours a year for forty years and I'm not all that bright, well.....you can fill in the rest.

If it ain't in the the ground it don't matter. Knowin where to look instructions don't come with a new detector so the ol codgers would probably be a step ahead here.

That was a great sermon there Reverend Connor. I do wonder though what your message will be 20 or so years from now when you're the old timer with all the experience and knowledge. Will it be if one is still swinging a Deus or the Nox you'll never make it to heaven. Or will it be don't belittle the outdated Deus or Equinox for I have experienced their capabilities and here's my GW button to prove it. grinning smiley

What really is the norm is the so called ELITE old guys acting so superior to us noobs.....Not helping the noobs either. This forum has that click bad.....Lucky for me my mentor and his mentor have about 60 yrs combined experience with detecting and diving. So I got schooled very quick in the relic game.....

I am just wondering where the line is to cross from inexperienced to knowledgeable detectorist?

All you old experts please do tell.....30 yrs? 40? 50?

One thing that, in my opinion, really gives a "leg up" to the long-timers, is that they grew-up through the ranks of the different technological evolutions. Versus someone who's gotten into it in just the last 20 yrs., has only-ever seen/used the current breed.

So for example, when I started (1975 or '76-ish), it was still the era of all-metal TR's (77b, and 66TR). The VLF/TR era was only *just* starting. Ie.: we heard of 'disriminators', but hadn't actually bought them or seen them yet. And we also "looked with suspicion" on them, because we heard you "might miss rings", haha. Also in 1975- to '76-ish, believe it or not, I actually saw some BFO's still in action !

So we learned the hard way, with no ground balance, no disc., etc...

By 1977 to '78-ish, it was apparent that you were a dinosaur unless you had a vlf/tr. And those were a beast to get any depth with, in disc. mode. But they were a god-send to knock out foil, tabs, etc...

Then by '78 to '80-ish, it became apparent that you were a dinosaur unless you had a motion discriminator. Doh!

And so on, and so forth, through all the evolutions. And at each step, you had a real "feel" for the technological differences, improvements, etc....

I realize that this doesn't make the guy a better hunter than someone who's only md'd for the past 10 yrs. But just saying that .... in-the-right-hands .... it does give a leg up to the person who's 'come up through the ranks'.

I think one of the largest differentiators between the old school folks and people getting into the hobby within the past 20 years or so is the advent of the Internet as a medium to share knowledge. I grew up in a tiny town, would have loved to had a metal detector when I was a kid in the 1970's, but didn't know anyone else that did it and had no knowledge of how to even get started. I remember seeing advertisements in Boys Life, and other popular magazines back then, but there was a lot of rubbish advertised as well, so unless you knew someone that already had the knowledge, you really had no idea what was junk vs good at that time because of course all the advertisements stated their detector was the best thing since sliced bread, no matter how cheap or expensive it was. The online forums really changed that because you could look at the various forums to get an idea from the finds posted what the better detectors to use were.

Is this all about experience, knowledge, the lack there of, or is it nothing more than what detector you think is the best.

That is so true, I remember looking at Popular Science, I sure would like to have a metal detector...then time passed, I retired and with the internet was able to jump to light speed thanks to Findmall.

About 7 years ago I started hunting the bay, and I remember coming out of the water at the leave time at Sandy Point state park....9am..everyone would meet and showing off there treasure for that weekend day.

Being a newbie I felt lucky just to be around all of the so called Pro's with all of the years of experience.....only a two would even acknowledge my presents... ..Seven years later I now look back at most of them and realize how narrow minded they were....and still are..finding there few pieces of Gold a year.

There are some hard-core good hunters who have grown calloused like that. They will not hunt with beginners, don't share tips, never share sites, etc.... They exclusively hunt with only other hard-core guys. Some of them grew weary of always having beginners bugging them. For example, I know of a hardcore turf hunter in So. CA. He'd get perpetual cold-call emails, from people who viewed his show & tell posts. People asking him "where's a good park to go to" and "how do you set your controls" and "can we meet so you can show the ropes" etc.... For awhile, he did accommodate those requests. But after awhile, got tired of it. So he gravitated to only hunting with like-minded hardcore hunters. And no longer accepted invites from anyone else.

A part of me can kind of understand this mentality. It would be no different that if you're Minnesota Fats, that you're probably going to prefer to play billiards with other billiard pro's. Or if you're Tiger Woods, you're probably only going to want to play against other pro's.

But there are other hard-core hunters that don't mind answering cold call emails and invites. Sure sometimes it "bites you in the b*tt". Like they never reciprocate with research on sites, etc.... But on the other hand, I've found that by being generous, then *most* of the time, those persons will reciprocate with research tips for good locations.

I only know three things about metal detecting....
1. How they work.
2. What I like.
3. How to use them to find gold jewelry in my city on a regular basis.

That's a good story.

I remember metal detectors being advertised on the same pages as X-ray glasses and Sea Monkeys...so you know, the skeptic flags were abundant.
