Franklin & Walking Liberty halves
November 20, 2019 02:41AM
Found quite a few of these years ago when the pickins was easier.-----But----I thought this was kind of interesting.----My wife started keeping records of W.L. & Franklin halves we have found in the last 17 yrs.---During that time span, we found 12 Franklins & 28 Walking Liberty halves.-----The last Franklin was found 11/13/'18 and the last Walker was just found on 11/12/'19.------I was just curious what some of you other guys finds rates are on these two types of silver halves.-----Del

Hey Del!....in 8-ish years of hunting I have exactly ONE Franklin, 10 Walkers, 3 Barbers and 2 Morgans (as far as “big silver” goes). Am I complaining? HELL NO! But I do find it interesting that Franklins are so hard to come by. An oddity for sure....

I'm averaging one Half Dollar per year.
I have never found a silver dollar in my life (yet).

IDX------Part of the reason for the lower Franklin finds rate is the fact that they were minted for a much shorter time period than the W.L.'s.-----Franklins 1948-'63---Walkers 1916-'47.

Only one Franklin....easy to remember, where....Miss Liberty Walking, my favorite coin, a few, I'd have to check. Only one Peace Dollar. Man, what a big flash of light when you uncover a silver dollar....your mind blanks out for a second. lol

I've only found 2 Franklin halves and 1 Morgan dollar in almost 30 years of hunting. Not sure exactly how many Walkers as my second ex-wife plundered my treasure chest.

That last sentence hurts to hear Dan. She likely bought a soda with them...unless you know otherwise.

You don't know how true that statement is. A friend of mine was working graveyard shift at a convenience store and some 20somethings came in with some silver dollars and asked him if he would accept them as cash. He 'reluctently' said ok, did a transaction for all that they had, then asked if they had anymore at home.

Del, I’ve not been as fortunate as both you and your wife finding Franklin or Walking Liberty halves.

I’ve dug my share of silver, but only 2 Franklin that I recall and maybe 3-4 Liberty halves. Dug plenty of seated halves though, only one bust halve and never dug a silver dollar, silver dollar eludes me.

Been detecting 30 plus years, hope I can squeeze a few more.

I wish I could be consistent on the bigger coins. My second year of detecting I scored a deep Peace dollar. As far as halves, .8 per year for me.

I have a few big silver pieces myself from my dirt digging days. My odd finds have been 2 piece dollars on the beach. I know when i was in the military ..... some officers when they made LT gave away silver dollars...... i wondered if this is how they ended up in someones pockets? We used to carry challenge coins around as well.

Lol...she hit the jack pot, I had gold nuggets, 85 oz's of silver rounds, gold rings from when I hunted water and I don't know how many silver coins from years of hunting. One of the many reasons she's an ex-wife smiling smiley

I've dug one early bust half, three seated halfs, 5 walkers, only one Franklin, two Morgan silver dollars and a 1700's two reale (it's larger then a quarter but smaller than a half).

Since 2006 when I retired I have recovered 26 Walkers and 8 Franklins. In conjunction, I have found 5 Barber halves and 1 Seated along with 4 Morgan dollars and 2 Peace dollars.

I started detecting in 1972 and began keeping pretty good records of finds in 2009 when I really got serious with the hobby. Prior years, kids growing up and not much hunting time. Can't find those earlier records right off, but know there were a couple of halves found back then. HH jim tn

Del, I resemble your remark(s).

You and Patsy have done well on those big silvers. But, just remember this revelation, the more you slow up, the slower you get. HH jim tn

Hello Del,

I hope you do find a bust, it’s an amazing feeling finding a first bust coin. I’ve dug a bust 1/2 dime, bust quarter and the bust half, still searching for a bust dime. Maybe in the future, bust dime would be nice.

Good luck, Maybe that bust will be one of your next digs!

All the best,
Paul

I found my first silver half 5 1/2 years ago. It was a 40% 1967. Since then I've found 3 Barber halves, 3 Walkers, and zero Franklins. I think those Franklins might have been easy finds for the old timers back in the 60s and 70s.

Water hunter, Chesapeake Bay...........Average......... 1 Barber, 12 Walkers, 2 Franklin's Half's a year......Very rare, Kennedy's, or Seated Half's. Most of my Silver coins are Washington Quarters........Average around 300 Silver/Sterlings a year...the last 5 years ...Mostly coins. Before that when I hunted the Ocean Six years......, Silver was rare..Maybe 6 silvers coins in 6 years. One was a 192? Morgan Silver dollar... the only SD I've ever dug..... Location, Location, location........
