Maybe someone who knows him personally should check up on him. A lot of fatalities down there.

I live in W TN, in Germantown, which right next to Memphis and we didn't get any bad weather except for some rain and thunder. Thanks for thinking about me. I'll be out detecting tomorrow.

Tornado passed approx 19 miles to my south. Farm fields in my area are littered with insulation, roofing materials, water bottles, stc.

I am a weather nut. Been following weather closely since early childhood.

I have not seen any weather forecasting professional weigh in in this what I call a fluke tornado. Steve G is meteorologist I think and indeed works in severe storms forecast center.
Anyway temp was around d 56 degrees F. Very cool for a tornado to form. Most data I have seen says temp need to be really no lower than 69F for formation of tornados.
Something else I find interesting.
The next morning after the tornado passed by, temps were still at around 50+ F.
I also witnessed this back in 2008 Feb 5 Super Tuesday when another long track formidable tornado came within 6 miles of my home. Again the next morning it was warm and calm just like what happened this week.

It is like no real cold front associated with these 2 tornados. Hence is this part of the why for the long tracks of these 2 tornados? And no real squall line either associated with these 2 tornados.
I am a trained weather spotter.

Cheers.

Dang TNSS, you should have been a weatherman!

They weren't really expecting tornadic activity out of those storms. There was a really low risk and that was quite a ways further west than the area it hit. They did issue watches but nobody pays attention to watches here. It starts getting real when the warnings hit, the sky gets green, and you can hear the rumbling of a freight train going down the tracks...cept it gets closer and louder. In 2016 a smaller EF2 tornado hit my area and property. I'm still dealing with tree issues and occasionally find house pieces while out in the woods. Back to this weeks storms...apparently the thunderstorms hit the perfect cooking pot for instability in that area and strengthened and some even were born there...I saw a big detailed description of it that said something about the tornado producing cell actually formed from that instable air. They are saying it tracked on the ground for over 50 miles. That's just insane...that area of TN is heavily populated too. The news is simply calling it "Nashville" but 50 miles covers several cities and a bunch of communities and towns. When most people think of Tennessee they think of low income people living in trailers and that being why there was so much damage. Nope. It was an EF4 tornado and that area surrounding Nashville has exploded in housing developments. Some of those communities were newer built homes and all that is left are foundations and basements.

This is a drone picture a guy I know took of the path in the Cookeville area. I have trouble getting it to post the pic here instead of just the link from my phone. Will have to correct when I get home from the laptop.

Something else I would like to here about from a weather professional.
Folks may not realize but from around 20 miles west of Cookeville the elevation is around 600 ft above sea level. As one progresses east and approaches Cookeville elevation rises to approx 1300 ft above sea level. So could this rise in elevation been a driver in this tornado actually touching down where it did Vs passing by with less damage?
This tornado will be one of if not the most costly in the state's history.

Back in 2008 on Feb 5 when the other tornado (long track with different path) struck, the area hit was not even under a tornado watch. Actually one had to go 2 counties over to the west to find where the tornado watch box termisnfed. This past week odds were low risk for this area hit.

Not picking on the weather professionals, but it is my opinion based on what I have witnessed in the last 16 plus years here since I retired, weather forecasting around here not as good as back in the 70s and 80s.
Now I do think forecasts for tropical cyclones has gotten better.

If this tornado would have struck with school in session death toll would have been much higher it looks like. Three schools suffered moderate to heavy damage.

I couldn't imagine weather like that, we get below zero temperature weather up here in northern New York but thankfully never any wind with that kind of force. Such devastation, I wish you all the best down there.
