EQUINOX #2 DROWNED...

Took the kids to the lake for a couple days. Equinox flooded in chest deep water after a few hours. This my second! Minelab is sending me another one.

Just curious if the machine is coming from a car with cold AC than going out to a hot temperature outside than going in to cold lake water?

Wondering if it is the temperature change as opposed to the depth pressure or maybe a combination of both?

Well the nox has finely gone to water.

With great sadness tonight i am holding a small wake for my nox. Purchased way back 15/02/2018 we have shared many a mile and finds struck with a tiger snake , & bashed too much bracken. At various times having coil & headphones replaced under warranty.. Tomorrow the control pod heads off for a warranty claim as well , leaving only the shaft as an original purchase. 7 hours last week in drizzle & soaking scrub was to much for the long suffering nox. Still wearing the original screen saver. Turning its self off constantly and wont run bluetooth.

One of the nice things about the Tarsacci.......if it does leak, just take the batterie out, shake out the water, and dry it. Your good too go.
And this is with salt water too...

This is what i loved with my AQUASPORT back in the early eighties Eric Foster had great design qualities as the battery compartment was completely seperate from the electronics. In all the years i had it i only had one battery that leaked so a very simple solution to give it a wash out and away you go again.

The design seems to have some serious issues. No possibility for repair - all
Glued together. Under warranty - inconvenience. out of warranty ???

Don't laugh but I still have one of those.

Speaking of water units anyone ever dunked a Simplex to see how it holds up?
Re: EQUINOX #2 DROWNED...
June 25, 2020 12:19AM
I have dunked this detector before with no issues.I also have detected in some very HOT temps . I am guessing this has something to do with it.

No repairs just throw it away and send you another unit...

They have to be cheap to make if they can just keep throwing them away and giving a new one back.
Not looking forward to mine when the warranty runs out since I water hunt mostly.

Instead of APPLE Care we need Minelab Care.

Hi Rob,
Great detector in its day and still is no slouch even in todays standards. I would love to have a dollar for every gold ring i found with mine. And its built like a tank.

Nox...water resistant at best. All machines will eventually leak, but the only detector models that were truely waterproof (diving) was the Fisher 1280x, CZ20, CZ21, and original Fisher Impulse. The JW Fishers pulse is supposed to be diver worthy,,,,,maybe. Never heard of the Nokta water machines leaking...LOL. I have and love the Nox 800, but not for underwater.

Hi CD

We have a very cold climate here in Tasmania Australia and in summer it does not get right up there in the heat and the Nox is still failing here Just a real flop on the part of Minelab. And its not good enough in this day and age.

That's disappointing. I bought one when they first came out and used it for 2 years in the water with no leaks. I sold it and decided to get another one and first time in the water it leaked. Maybe I shouldn't take the replacement underwater.

John,

Only other possible failure option I can think of is the coil connector O-ring. Keeping it cleaned and lubed since you're taking it in the water. Don't know how often you switch coils when land hunting. A grain or two of sand / dirt in an O-ring can be disaster. Of course, you probably already know this, just throwing it out there as food for thought.

Another EQ800 to a watery grave is not good. Strike 2. As much as I like my EQ800, if I had 2 go belly up in the water, I'd be looking for a different water detector after i received the warranty replacement. At some point the warranty is gone and then where are we? Shelling out another $900 to start all over again? Not sure I want to play the throwaway detector game.

Are you going a different route once the replacement arrives or holding course?

Good luck.

Aren't the Nox and Simplex too light to do any serious submersible detecting? Doesn't a machine need some weight to stay under? Just curious as I never water hunted before?
Re: EQUINOX #2 DROWNED...

My Equinox leaked on the top right edge where it's glued together. Seems we have to start thinking the Equinox is splash proof not waterproof. I'm only going to take mine to waist deep or get something else. A splash or a fall in the water would be ok but not submerged for few hours. Which detectors are rare to leak? The ones with a rubber seal rated to 200 ft? I don't worry about my Gold Kruzer in the water like I do the Equinox now.

I wonder if silicon on the edge would help.

If you get a leak after the warranty is expired, much would that cost.

Third time's a charm!

I've heard do not immerse a hot detector in water or it could "oil can". Put it in the shade for a bit.

Kind of funny as everyone and their Brother complained about the APEX and only being splash proof and looks like the Mighty Nox is the same. LOL!

Better question is, are Noxes leaked check before they are sold?
So many minutes at a certain depth.. Check for vapor in screen and if machine still operates.
Would make sense to me.
But what do I know.

Well I got my Equinox 800 back after it leaked. I'm going to take it in the water out deep to find out if this one leaks. I'm going to use it in the water till my 2 year warranty is up.
Re: EQUINOX #2 DROWNED...

Well with all the underwater detectors i have used since the late 70:s Whites p.i. 1000 Eric Fosters, Aquasport, Whites p.i. Whites Dual Field Vallon. It has always been my policy before using the detector from new to apply silicone grease to the o ring apart from the Dual Field as this o ring is made of a different composition which should not have silicone grease applied to it,

My next step is to fill the bath and leave the detector underwater for 48 hours , And over each year do this pretty regular also completely hoseing down the the detector removing any salt bulld up.and checking there is no sand on the o ring.As i specialised in water detecting here in Australia and spending every day in the water when weather was suitable i have not had any trouble with leaking of detectors. With Minelab with the Excalibur you need to send it in and have it pressure tested very regular,

So first off if you have an Equinox i would slam it under water for 48 hours right from the start and every so on repeat . Its definetely a manufacturing blunder with the Equinox and i would be unloading it well before the warranty runs out and if you are happy with it over all buy another one and do the same thing. Minelab have had problems with the very early ones and still with the recent ones. So come on Minelab its just not good enough in this day and age, And think about how many units that are out there that are not getting dunked into water. They maybe would have heeps more that were failing.

Hoo Roo.

Sorry to hear about your machine drowning. Did you try CPR ? Lol.. All jokes aside, minelab always takes care of they're boys.Im sure you'll have another new one fast with the apex needing a test garden beatdown.

Re: EQUINOX #2 DROWNED...

The waterproofing problem has been ongoing with manufacturers. No matter the 3030 or the Nox....Minelab is just one of many. You see all these gasket upgrades or mods to seal it better. Grease, no grease.....ect, ect... I do wonder about how harsh salt water is in keeping it sealed. Perhaps simpler designs would be better....like waterproof pinpointers. Thanks

This guy lives 1 hour from me and we converse quite a bit on the forums and p.m. He has used it an enormost amount of times in salt water as he lives right on the beach and as you can see it was bought about 2 years ago and he really hammers his detectors and its just given up the ghost 2 days a go So its lasted all that time without leaking so if you have one you do not know when its going to @#$%& its self. It could be the day after your warranty runs out so you are up @#$%& creek with out a paddle.

A bloody discrace from Minelab And you dont see them coming on any of the forums to give any explanations on apologies.
