I was 17, I was at a neighbors place for a picnic and a couple of their relatives that were there brought some metal detectors with them and after explaining how they worked etc. I thought that would be something that I would enjoy and I sure did and still do.

Ski-whiz : So that would mean you started @ about 1977-ish, right ? What machines were you first seeing and first using ?

I started in 1976, at perhaps 14 -ish. And that was at the tail-end of the all-metal TR days (77b, 66TR , etc...) We were just beginning to see the advertisements for the discriminators (5000 Series I, Garrett Groundhog, etc...). But there was skepticism at first. But .... eventually, everyone switched over to the TR discriminators when it became clear we could pass foil and tabs , woohoo ! eye rolling smiley

The first detector that I owned was a Garrett Freedom Ace Plus, then I got a model 3300 (forgot what it was called) from Radio Shack, and then a Tesoro Silver uMax which I really liked, so much so that I was a Tesoro guy for many years. My wife used the Freedom Ace Plus and did great with it.

Happy birthday SkiWhiz. I got a Jetco in '69 when I was 14. Found a lot of cool things with it even though it would only go a few inches deep. Didn't detect much through the mid 70's as I was playing high school and college sports. Started again in the early 80's with a Garrett on my wife's family farm in the Shenandoah Valley. Haven't let up since. Going tomorrow before the snow hits.
