schultzie.......... very VERY good youtube link. This is exactly what I have been performing with archaeologists around the Nation for several years. There are a few things that I have been performing a little differently........ as I have found different ways to 'efficientize' the process...... saving time/resources/manpower/money. I have made plenty of in-roads into/with this (archaeological) community.

Lil John, can you give us the email address to Nat G you used. That way all of our mails will go to same person and not be scattered. More effective that way. And remember forum members, unless you email Nat G, your complaining here only, will not help our hobby. Thanks to all who email their views !!!

Hi, In all fairness to Garrett when I first posted my title on the first post I made I was not 100% sure that this show was their brain fart or not but my information did come from someone with very close ties to Garrett though....I was just informed by Vaughn that it was not their show and they have no control over what brand of metal detectors are being used in any type of show....I am going to edit the title of my post.....Sorry for the misinformation ..JJ

Hey Guys

I read Tri's message above and he had this " comments@natgeochannel.com " as a way to express your comments about the show. So Thanks to him that is what I used, it didn't come back to me so most likely it is a good link to them..If not we will have to find out and re-email our comments...

Anytime 'money' /// $ dollars $ (from the items coming out of the ground) is the primary focus of a metal detecting televised show; exceptionally negative ramifications usually ensue. "Historical value" becomes lost..... as a resultant collateral by-product.

Thanks for the video you posted. That was great; I'd love to be involved in an archaeological project like that, but man...it would drive me nuts marking targets, and not getting to see what the targets were (leaving the "digging" part to the archeologists at some later date...the curiousity would kill me!)

I got rid of television a few years ago. Don't miss it one bit. I watched the history channel in a hotel room a few weeks ago, the speed of the images and superficially of the content drove me crazy. I can only imagine what the other channels are like now.

I was impressed when I saw this video too. Thought this would be a good place to post it.

in my view, the irresponsible digging exposed on national television
is(will) cause harm on an unprecedented level.hobbyists with
"many" years in the field will attest to this.the public at large is
"very" sensitive about the opening of holes in public places,or
ANY place for that matter, and when it is done "irresponsibly"
reflects on EVERYONE swingin' a coil,no matter where they do it!
showing the improper covering (or lack of covering thereof) of dug holes on tv is tantamount
to commiting hobby suicide...just sayin'

I finally watched two episodes last night. It wasn't that bad, but it did put the emphasis on making lots of money and getting rich from metal detecting. Which, as we all know doesn't really happen like that. Most of the time we are digging trash and occasionally find an awesome keeper (if we are lucky). I did not know the metal detecting community has a "language" of it's own. Finding "roundness", "civ", "rev", "cologne", etc. I really MUST get educated! Anyway, these guys are a pair of squirrels who happen to have gotten a TV show. How??? I do not know. I just wish they were classy enough to portray the hobby in a good way with less emphasis on money & side bets and emphasize the recovery of our history in a respectful manner. Here in NE PA I have a tough enough time getting permission due to people thinking I might get rich off of them... even after offering to share my finds with them. This show could destroy that aspect for many detectorists as landowners will want to "get rich quick" by your metal detecting. IMO, the show could have been done more tastefully and could have showed more of the "giving back" events that we all participate in. Just my two cents worth.

Yes,I found the show to place focus on monetary value of each find. And whoever finds the most gets to perform some type of mayhem to the one that found the least. Doubt I'll waste another half hour watching it again.

I speculate these shows will make a fairly large 'sales-spike' for the metal detector Mfr's; however, word to the wise:

Be careful! You may win the battle........... but lose the war. Think "long-term". Choose wisely.

Schultzie said "IMO, the show could have been done more tastefully and could have showed more of the "giving back" events that we all participate in."

TV is not looking for the truth Schultzie. They look for whatever brings in the most money. If making a certain class of people look bad brings in more $$, then that's what wins. I don't watch the 'unreality' shows. It degrades what little intelligence I might have. As a matter of fact, I rarely watch TV at all. As I told one of my friends, "It doesn't take much to entertain the American people", and that's exactly why TV programing is so poor.

The problem with this program is that there are some who will think this is what metal detecting is all about and will begin to push laws to protect everyone from such people as us. These two juveniles will possibly bring a lot of grief to the hobby because people will see it and "know it's true" because they "saw it on TV!"

I think the show has already been dropped...

I have heard Garrettt did not want to be associated with it after seeing it...

But yes it is a pathetic show....and very harmful...

There's another one coming out in this month called American Digger's.... On Spike TV

We will have to wait and see..says first show is tomorrow night...

the archeologist re already trying to have this show removed.....but I know one of his partner's is Bob Buttafuso of Centerville electronics and I dont think he would take part in a sham of a show.. he is very dedicated to preserving history..

you "echo" my sentiments exactly! to reiterate,
the public at large can be influenced by the
irresponsible behavior and view detectorists in general
in a bad way!..just sayin'

Just thought I would let you guys know that your thoughts and concerns about the metal detecting show "Diggers" on National Geographic channels......Does/Has made a difference.....as these two immature guys have gotten themselves into hot water.......Thanks to all who have expressed their opinions directly to NatGeo and/or facebook.

Check out this link: ( [mtstandard.com] )

and evidently NatGeo has NOT ordered any more shows.........

Tri

If only we could get someone that represents the integrity of the metal detecting community.......hmmm....

Now we need to address Rick Savage and "American Savage"... this guy is nuts.

the first show was cool. i am new to the hobby and it was kinda cool to see what they dug up. could care less about what they got paid. i am learning this hobby on my own really, due to the extream lack of knowing anybody who is into it around my area, but even i know that if you dig a hole you fill it back up lol. as far as rick savage? he is a dbag..... he dosnt do it for a hobby and he isnt running an artifact recovery team.... and i am betting it isnt him doing the site research or color codeing his pretty maps either.
