GHOST TOWN FINDS W/PICS ;-)

Hey all

well - after 3 trips out to the ghost town per the original thread -- I finally have enough stuff to show and make a post with.

To say it was not as I was anticipating is an understatement! I believe it's been hunted hard in the distant past by most likely the old timers back in the 80s/early 90s with the old Whites and CZ machines. Reason I think this is because the farmer said no one's ever hunted it that he knows of (<<key phrase) but also the biggest indicator that it's been hunted is the lack of finds in any area where the iron/trash is NOT thick. Wherever there was iron - I made finds - wherever there wasn't any iron - I didn't make any finds = hmmmm...

I had to work hard to find what I did here over the course of the 3 trips at approx. 2.5 hrs on the 1st hunt and 4 to 5 hrs on each of the following 2 trips out.

Every coin and button find was made in the thick of the iron (and it was bad!) where the old livery, general store and blacksmith shop were. The school yard and town hall were almost void of targets except for the occasional wheat cent or piece of junk/etc. and I think I found a junk ring, a marble, the 1942 silver war nickel and the wings thing over in those sites. The war nickel is the newest coin found.

All of the old coins came from the General store/livery area but as you can see - they use heavy fertilizer and so most of the coins/etc. are toast.

I did manage a good seated Quarter 1857 P - a 1863 shield nickel and a decent 1861 fatty as well as a fairly ledgeable 1874 Injun and a cool Chevrolet Token of some sort

I also found an 1863 store card but it's pretty much toast as is the 2 cent piece and a few other Indians (18?? 1897 1899) ---- some older wheats (1911 1916 1921 1929 1937)

a couple of flat buttons - a few 2 piece buttons, a flattened thimble, couple of spoons, pistol balls, some doodads, etc. etc.

Not shown are 4 horse shoes, 2 axe heads and a bunch of iron junk/scrap...

Used the CTX w/6" coil 2xs and the Deus w/9" coil once...

On to bigger/better pastures from here! I have some other sites to get to before they plant so stay tuned and

Not bad MRH, I'd be pleased. That soil did eat up the copper.

Yes, a lot of really good coins there. It's great how the new age iron machines are able clean up where others didn't have a chance.

With the exception of private property and locations off-limits to detectors, it’s becoming very difficult to locate areas that haven’t been visited by a detectorist.

Unfortunately, your ghost town site appears to have already been cherry-picked, leaving the difficult targets for you to find.

Nice job, in a tuff site. That is still alot of good finds though,congrats.

The third buckle down, is that military? looks like it could be CW era.

Hey Corey that buckle comes off horse tack..

actually its a buckle cover it slid over the buckle to keep it from popping open.... that style is 1880-1910 or so...The earlier ones had a loop on one side and usually a heart embossed in it..

Yesteryear...... we could only work the outskirts of nearly all sites.
With technological advancements.......... we (now) can start approaching the buildings/structures where the nails/iron content is high...... and 'start' to have 'some' success. Never could do this in the past.

Oh - the horse buckle cover! lol I thought he was talking about the last buckle thing which is iron. He said the "3rd" one but must have counted the flat square copper bar as one of the buckles shown at the top!

And for the most part - yes - I hunt mainly fields over here in West Michigan Keith - there are no "woods" around here! lol This is the 2nd largest city in MI next to Detroit where Aaron lives

I drive a 1/2 hr to 45 mins just to get to farm country where I can find sites to hunt --- sites out in the "woods" IF I could even find any would be at least 1.5 hrs drive in a northerly direction mainly --- I just don't have that kind of time to do the research. tracking people down to ask permission, or actual driving either :-(

I hear what you're saying!

I remember back in the 80s using an old whites coin master and some of the garrett machines that you couldn't get within 100 feet of iron infested ground!

But also - back in those days I didn't hunt the sort of sites I do now and you didn't have to because as I'm sure you're aware of - you could still find out of the way parks/etc on the outskirts of town out in the country or tucked away in some long forgotten patch of woods where you could still walk away with a handful of Indians, V's, Buffs, Barbers, Mercs, a couple rings, and a seated coin or cool token or silver 1/2 if lucky that day... It wasn't an everyday thing by any means but there were still a few to be had with a little research and persistence... Lakes were even better at that time...

Those days are long gone for sure so now we're left with sites like this one for the most part unless you live somewhere with a lot of history/activity like the east coast or the like (such as) sites like Harold triple H and Bill Ladd and those guys hunt out in the middle of nowhere in woods/etc (I can only dream)!

Those guys find Reales like we find Mercury dimes! You can detect an entire lifetime here in MI and never find a Real ---- although --- I know 2 people here that have found one or 2

That was a lot of work but worth the fun factor...I'm sure there are coins and relics still hiding in there and of course if you try outside of the area you were hunting you may find places where people hung out or even had tents set up..
