How pretty is this....(old oak tree)......Wanna guess what this relic is

Me and my buddy walked up on this today....

research says this was a house in 1840....

hope theres some more on this road....

Still a beautiful picture...I got it at sunset with the sun behind it...thought I would share what our Southern house sites look like...this one is setting on the edge of a small creek...The early houses in this area sit on creeks and streams as there was no well diggers around ....the well's seem to have come in around the 1860's and afterwards...

I like to take pics of all the White oaks I find at old house sites...they will be gone one day...

See if yall know what this is I dug it today at this house in the pic........I dig them alot in Civil War camps and houses the soldiers stayed around....its a field made piece....it was once used for battle but manipulated and used for ?....It weighs right at 500 grains for a little hint....look close at the pic and you will see it, if you are really looking .....

A sword tip protector, made from two flattened bullets / musket balls?

Thimble. You can see the needle marks at the top.

500 grains is a 58 cal mini, correct? Can't guess what it was used for.

Looks like an awesome site to search.

Tip of a canteen?
Looks like you can see rims of a three ringer from the one pic. I can also see the letter U.
Used for ? Not a clue. Maybe something to do with preparing food?

It is a bullet flattened out for a game of checkers.

Looks to me like a gun flint holder for a flintlock rifle.

Mike's needle-mark suggestion made me think - is it a palm-guard, to protect your hand during sewing?. We find them here in the U.K, they are usually more substantial, and often have a circular depression in them to hold a thimble in place.

Looks like a frizzon cover for a flintlock so the gun will not fire if the trigger is pulled.

Probably a flattened and futher hollowed out 500 grain 17.8mm minie ball. I believe it was used during the Civil War to hold a single potato chip.

Did bored soldiers place bullets on railroad tracks? Do you also have a collection of 4 inch long Large Cents?

I found this with some Googling:

Hey Keith, how old do you think that oak is? I had a red oak blow down in my woods last year. Counting the rings, it must have started its life near the civil war time period. 32" base. I had my neighbor mill it and I will be making a huge dining table this winter.

As an ex cabinet maker American White Oak was my favorite wood to work with.

Beautiful and stunning grain effects..

Wolfau, I agree. I love character random width white oak flooring with a natural finish....Stunning, is a good word for it.

Possum, We had a fast growing Pin Oak go down in storm Sandy. It was over 6 feet at the base. Three feet up it measured over 36" in diameter. I counted the rings and it was only 85 years old, hence 'fast growing'. Those big old Red Oaks look like they have been around when woolly mammoths roamed.
