Reading old map abbreviations

I have been working with Maprika quite a bit to better identify some areas I have been driving and walking past, and also so I can argue better with Ozzie.

Anyway, on some of these 1840s, 1850s, and 1860s maps I know...

S. H. = schoolhouse
B. S. = blacksmith
BK Yd = brickyard
LB Yd = Lumber yard

Can you help with...

G. M. - possibly General Mercantile?
G & S M - possibly General and ???? Mercantile?
S. M.
C. M. - candle maker ?
C. B.
H. K.
W. S.
T. S. - most times i see them written out as Tannery, so maybe something else?

Thanks as always

As a side-note. I had a ways back purchased 10 years of a local newspaper on pdf from the 1880's, and it is amazing how many drunk businessmen were run over by freight and passenger trains on the stretch of track that runs right behind my house, ....alcohol and sneaky trains is a deadly combination still....

Ha Ha Ha!... argue better with ozzie...got a chuckle out of that.

I'm glad you are understanding the Maprika program. Let's put it to some use.
But, I know where most of all the long gone bldgs are, in that park. I also have noted dozens of coordinates of old razed 17 & 1800's houses in a few other big parks.....all this info, so little time.

Great info guys. Most of my old maps just have a square blob to represent a building of some sort. Nice to know what they mean if I run into those abbreviations.

Question; Why don't the 1800's maps have street names?

I remember seeing old Fire Insurance building listings for San Antonio. There were a lot of places which would have been abbreviated as LBH - Ladies Boarding House. The old insurance agent who showed them to me explained that the correct title might have been abbreviated as W.H. .......

Was going through an old local history book and came across a couple more. Not sure if all abbreviations are standard. In a local 1800's atlas, they abbreviate school house two different ways and also spell it out.

C.B. = Carriage Builder
W.M.= Wagon Maker

Oddly, they made wagons but built carriages.
