Hi,,,,good test I think????...Better check that BB again, I think their composition is copper plated steel...Do a magnet test and post results.....JJ

I used to have a powerline BB pump gun in the mid 70's. The gun had a small magnetic tip on bolt to keep BB in place vs rolling out the barrel. Don't think they have changed.

It would help if you gave us more info on this "copper bb". This is presumably a ball-bearing for some calibre gun, Imperial size?
Edit: is it one these, 4.3 - 4.4mm diameter, copper-plated steel?

I'm going to ask a silly question, what value is there in testing a BB?

I know when I'm detecting old sites, I personally could care less about digging up a BB sized target.

To me, based in the U.K, the value of it is that it's a difficult target. I see many tests that use large-ish coins like nickels, cents, all are relatively easy targets, that can be detected 9+ inches away. But many of our 'worthwhile' targets are small/low-conductivity, and may only be detectable in-ground to 2 - 6 inches, so a challenging test target is good to see. Unfortunately, iron/steel targets would not be my choice.

Does bring up a good question though???
Which detector(s) detect iron the deepest, with good ID of course??
Is there an ideal freq to utilize to detect iron??

Testing a bb is interesting but I'd rather do a test with a dime....or bb (s) next to or surrounding a dime....or instead of bb's next to a dime...shotgun pellets or buckshot. Thanks for diong the test for us Beyonder.

I guess I just don't see the value in testing a BB. Interesting yes, but what BB sized targets are you after? Small gold, sure, but that's better to test buckshot/small lead targets that more closely mimic gold, but a tiny copper clad steel target doesn't really mimic anything in the real world I'd want to keep. Maybe I'm looking at this all wrong?

I speculate the BB is .177 caliber...... which is approx 4.5mm.

Hi TSS......"Does bring up a good question though??? Which detector(s) detect iron the deepest, with good ID of course??
Is there an ideal freq to utilize to detect iron??"..........You know I have never heard anyone ever ask this question before...LoL......I really have no idea what machine that would be (name or brand)....But if you are talking bigger iron then it would be a two box detector and they run at a low frequency.........I got 3 or 4 of them but can't remember the exact frequencies.......(ideal frequency varies with size of intended targets) .........JJ

I love it!!!! This is great feedback and really shows who read Tom's articles and who didn't(Not knocking anyone BTW) smiling smiley. I just checked and it IS a copper coated steel BB from an air rifle. I don't want to give away my reason for testing this just yet, I know you will figure it out. What value in testing such an item...indeed winking smiley

Memory serves me, you are referring to when he was using the f75 and noticed the unit going crazy with signals, only to find shotgun pellets peppered in the dirt. Years ago bird shot and buck shot was lead.....not sure of their make up today.....could be a mix of steel and copper???

Over here, lead-free shot is becoming more common, made of a bismuth alloy.(97% bismuth / 3% tin).

BTW the Blisstool with the 15" coil(with almost every switch tested), could pick up the BB at 1" maximum.

I'm guessing a fairly small target like this 4.4mm bearing, is probably too small for a big 15" coil. That is to say, the optimal coil size is, perhaps 8 inches. Just a hunch.

On the Blisstool, with the 11" coil, I got 3.5"'s on the BB.

I sort of wonder if all BBs are the same.

i mean this is in that there not solid copper i dont believe..

more like copper coated..

"BB guns" are .177 caliber. The Pellets are approximately .177 or slightly larger. The "BBs" are steel shot, coated with copper, or sometimes zinc (Daisy Quicksilver.) The BBs are actually smaller than .177, google says .171 to .173, better to roll down a smooth bore. There are lead .177 BBs (Perfect Rounds) out there.

Why is he testing on Copper coated steel BBs? He's got a yard full of them, and wants to set up so the machine can't see them? Just guessing.
