Watched the Relic Half of Tom's Seminar

Very interesting and educational. Tom's research into the history of Fort Meade combined with the recovery work he has done there make for a fascinating presentation. If you like history you will really enjoy this part of the seminar. Tom then gets into the practical aspects of effectively using a metal detector in a relic hunting environment and the challenge we face at a site laden with iron. Some of the most valuable topics in this part to me were:

Evaluation of a relic hunting site (low ground vs high ground)
Varying sink rates at a site
Using the best detector technology you can and what is available at this time
Methods to deal with the iron burden
Effective discrimination setup
Iron masking and how subtle, yet highly impacting, it can be
Looking out for non-metallic artifacts
The importance of being thorough - while detecting and during recovery
Research that may yield clues to dating your finds
His experience working with local governing agencies and local people

Though I live quite a ways from the seashore, I look forward to watching the beach hunting DVD. I'm sure I'll pick up some things there also.
