CTX 3030 riddle:When is a 12-13 not a nickel?

When it's a zinc penny? How the hell did this read so low? After i dug it I checked the hole and plug nothing. So I thought it was some low conductor I didnt find, I rescan the penny and 12-13 again, air tested! Interesting for sure.

I have a War nickel that reads 12/37 all day long. It's in nice shape too. I can't figure that out either?

Can't say I've had one read 12-13 but I have had them in the 20's and all the way up disguising as a quarter at 12-45. Did dig one yesterday that was wrapped in gold foil..... someone having fun with the water hunters.... I got a laugh out of that one.

It did have a few small "bite marks" in it but it was mostly intact. Possibly the shape of it caused it to be so low IDK.

Because it's 38% silver = it reads higher than most at 12/13

check what a shield nickel reads at once = not the same as jeffs, buffs, and V's

I dug a war nickel with etrac that read 12-40 in the ground. On top of the ground reads 12-17. The mixing on them not an exact science back then.

Sea water corroded zinc pennies can read from 12-37 to as low as 12-01. But once they get down to the single digits, you can easily see the corrosion.

The one that you have, 12-13, probably shows signs of cracking, bubbling, or lifting of the outer shell.
I have found quite a few of these at beaches over the years.

Detecting since Feb, 2010
E-trac with 18"x15" SEF, 13" Ultimate coil, Pro coil, Minelab 8" coil, 4.5"x7" SEF, Sunray target probe
CTX3030 with 17"x13" DD coil, 11" DD coil

I've had that to happen to me too, war nickel reads a little high but out of the ground it reads as a regular nickel, 12-13.

Those zinc pennys always keep you guessing. When I dig iffy signals its almost always a zincoln.

May not be applicable but a deep nickel can read in the high coin range...Dug a few when cherry picking high coins and discing out nickel. Once on the ground read like a nickel...Nature of the beast I guess and not a war nickel...

I've dig probably 4 war nickels a year and all read around 12-13 just like the regular Jeffs. I know they are 35% silver but never had one read anything other than 12-13 maybe 12-14.
