Would like to see Detectors with "Run Time" Meters
July 26, 2015 04:52PM
Would like to see some detectors released featuring run time meters. A meter where total run time can stored and looked at. Maybe even an option for current hunt time with option to reset.

Run time meters could also play a part in buying a used detector.

I could work against the seller if your selling a pristine great working machine with high hours.... But I get your drift....

While were at it lets have a Detector Fax report in case it was dropped or damaged in any way and fixed as not to tell? LOL!

I do that with my CTX now to keep track of how many hours I hunt in a given time period. I always create a Geohunt when I start and record it in Xchange for year end summaries that I compile.
(yeah, I'm a data hound and I freely admit I have a problem)

Electronics can randomly take a crap, regardless of how many hours it was used. The date made could tell you more than "run time" on a metal detector. Unless there are moving parts "run time" would not be helpful IMO

I'm with aguerrerro, I would rather have a 1 year old "electronic device" with 200 hours on it than a 5 year old one with 10 hours on it.

This statement is interesting: "I would rather have a 1 year old "electronic device" with 200 hours on it than a 5 year old one with 10 hours on it"
Is this because of infant mortality? 10 hours use isn't really enough to weed out the premature failures, but after 200 hours (and still working OK) it should be into the 'reliable' phase of it's life.
The main problem is you don't know how the 200 hours have been spent. Some people are just plain rough on equipment, and it might not be 'working OK", and there's likely to be accumulated mechanical wear (plugs/sockets, cam-locks, coil bottoms, scratched screens, trigger-switches), etc. even if it functions.
[ I'm a keen cyclist, and a good bike mechanic, and I've had my hands on plenty of them, buying/selling, servicing etc. And I do come across old, but barely-ridden bikes. And they are generally a lot better than a newer used one.]
So regarding detectors, I would personally choose the 5 y.o with 10 hrs use.

And what does run-time actually state about how something is AB-used :-)

My portable GPS provides the needed data.

That would be another worthless feature that could be added to the 3030 along with GPS and a time clock...lol

That's a good point. Wouldn't cost anything to do a software upgrade on a CTX to get something like that if enough people wanted it. winking smiley

yeah, and the wife sees how long you been hunting, this could be used in divorce court haha, and try to get away with, but honey I bought it used with 100 hours on it

LOL, Never thought of that !!!!

I think some folks do try to track their detecting time. And some do try and keep an eye on the battery power supply level. And some folks when buying used are concerned with condition, and maybe how much the detector has been used.

Not really big on meter but could see some good and some bad but I would like a clock.

I've been burnt on 2 machines that were 5-8 years old with low hours. Luckily Fisher repaired the CZ-5 at no charge, but the Tesoro Tiger Sjark cost me $250 to replace coil. Both machines were very low hours.

I see what you're saying, you don't know how the machine has been stored during those years, either. If it's been inside a vehicle in the sun, or inside a damp cold garage, it will have potential problems. My bicycle analogy has parallels, here, as well. Damp storage is a common one, and little-used bikes are often showing rust on parts with poor chrome-plating. This is where examining/testing the machine before purchase is best.

Its a fine line Fletch. Most of the time the run time is a negotiating tool for the purchase and value...... wrongly as you have pointed out some times. I bought a like new machine with about 10 hours of salt water time on it and it set in the closet for 3 years. I inspected it and thought great. First time out....... i got the draided cable casing split on the coil. Like you said ive also bought some rough looking ones with a few years on them at a great price expecting to have to do some repairs ......that still run fantastic.

I think it could be good for keeping up with battery life. Right now its masking tape on the upper arm and a pen.

Detectors are like women all are different even if two blondes etc. With the complexity of units using for the most part overseas electronics(much cheaper for manufacturers) any innard could go at any time. Made in America for the most part should be assembled in America. Run meter not practical as some guys use them with care while other do everything but hit golf balls with theirs..Good idea in theory but not practical in reality..

"Detectors are like women"..........well Dan, now you got me thinking. I do like my women made in america, but I don't know about putting a run meter on one....hhhmmmmm?

I would rather have a machine that does what i want first..LOL..

They still haven't built it yet so clocks...gps..color displays etc..are at the back of the line for me..

Yea, you could say that Marcomo....I'm also an old analog White's guy too, although I did join the 21st century with my digital MX5.

Thanks for the compliment...lol

Be careful what you wish for. Especially if you detect a high number of hours compared to the average user.

A run time meter would allow the manufacturer to tie their warranty to actual hours of use on the detector.
