battery extenders?

I am curious about the actual results when these are released.

One problem: if your device requires x voltage and the battery has discharged to below that voltage how does this "extender" increase the voltage above minimum?

It looks to me like it should be something we can try safely and report to the forum our results. If this can really increase use time by a factor if 6 it could be a real benefit. I don't see the AA detectors as the ones to need help, though.
