Here's a ferrous object fresh out of electrolysis. I.D.!!!!

It was deep in the backyard of an old home. Part of a car? A wagon or horse drawn buggy? It looks like it was meant to spin in some fashion. Hub cap? It's only three inches across. I am suspicious of it because it was found in a Union Calvary camp but there was also an old home there, as evidenced by all of the square nails and red brick bits. If anyone can shed any light on this piece, I would really appreciate it.

Here are front and back pics of this bizarre piece. Thank you....kevin

That turned out real nice Kevin, how long did you keep it in for?

It looks like a old outdoor water faucet handle.

How about a plate or seperator within one of the variations of grapeshot rack?

Just a wild guess but might be a top for a pot or something similar....Remember old cooking utensils made made of heavy iron....

Try a wire brush on a grinder that will help and not hurt the relic

About 8 hours. I would have kept it in longer but it had quit bubbling for some reason. I am doing a cannon-ball frag right now and I started with fresh water, baking soda (arm and hammer) and I'm using an old airgun spring as the sacrificial piece that connects to the positive lead. About three hours ago, it was bubbling great!!! But I just went and looked at it and it has quit bubbling.

Have you tried adding more baking soda or salt to the bath?

Did the transformer die? Lose a good connection?

The solution seems to become more conductive as the rust seperates from the item being cleaned, allowing more current flow which could take its toll on a transformer. Maybe you were using a battery?

Low and slow when cooking Kevin...

Keep the amps low...they will short out the more iron particles get into the water as it becomes more conductive..

I like to use like 1.5 amps at 12 volts...My power supply has a circuit breaker and it trips when the water gets dirty...if you don't have a circuit breaker inline when it starts drawing to hard it will burn up a power supply especially those cheap small ones..

Its best to get a Variable voltage and amps unit....I've got one I've used since the 80's and it still going strong..it will kick out occasionally but I just reset it and clean up the water and start again..

Thanks Keith. That is some great info. I was just using whatever seemed to work best. In other wirs, I went into this project with my eyes half closed. With just a partial knowledge of electrolysis. I learn something everytime that I click on this forum!!! And I sincerely appreciate it. Thanks again Keith. Low and slow. That will be my watch-word when using electrolysis.

Hey Keith, it is worth mentioning that my analog battery charger has these 3 settings: "6volts-6 amps"........"12 volt 2 amps"......"12 volts 6 amps"
I could install an inline circuit breaker is I knew where to look. Where would I find such an item?? I mean.....like, here in town.
