Tom,

What would be or is the optimum operating frequency for a detector if you were only looking for coins? relics? gold? There must be a lot of variables(damp ground, dry ground, minerals etc.) I know that I read somewhere that Charles Garrett believes that single frequency detectors operate more efficiently and deeper(please correct me if I'm wrong) than multiple frequency detectors. Yet I see Minelab detectors constantly picking up more "goodies" deeper than any Garrett detector. It seems to me that Mr. Garrett seems to be building detectors based on "old" technology and is sticking to that format. Having more frequencies is beneficial or is perfecting the one operating frequency better? It just seems to me that every other manufacturer except Garrett (excluding their P.I. detector) are using more frequencies. What are your beliefs about this? Anybody else?

Cache hunting tactics? (4 replies)

Knowing how iron effects the detection depth of a metal detector and in some cases iron masking can completely hide buried metal targets from detection I have a question about cache hunting. Now a little more information is in order.
Earlier this year I was removing old fence post and decided to bury a small cache of zinc pennies that I had found over the past years that were damaged to much for the bank to take. I used a plastic container that measured 4" in diameter by 6" long. I filled the container with pennies and buried it at a measured depth of 22". I took my detector, setup up as usual and began to sweep across the hole where I had buried the container of pennies. Nothing but a very low iron grunt sound and a VDI of iron came from my machine. Not being pleased with the results I dug up the pennies carefully checking the dirt for any iron and found one old rusted nail "4" long" about 15" deep right on top of the pennies. Okay bear with me here. I buried the pennies again while rechecking the dirt again for any iron. After finishing, I checked the hole with my machine and again only a low iron grunt. Well I dug the pennies up again, checking each handful of dirt again, nothing. This time I buried the container at exactly 12" from the top of the ground. I turned on my machine and still only a low iron grunt.
Now all that said, if a person was hunting for a buried cache of old coins what would be the best approach?
Turning the sensitivity up did not help.
Reducing the discrimination to zero did not help.
Running in all metal did not help.
What strategy would a person use in this situation?

I hear people say wow my machine locks on silver. Lets compare my CZ70 to my F75
The CZ has 7 segment ID or icons .The F75 has a scale of 1 - 99.
The CZ coin segment will hit a wheat, a silver dime ,silver quarter and a large cent all on the same segment.
The F75 ID for wheat is 65 silver dime 76 silver quarter 84 and LG cent 88 So does the F75 lock on silver ?
Well if the wheat at 65 - 88 the large cent, was one segment all that silver between would be a lock.
The F75 gives more info, good or bad.
I hit a #88 with the F75 and had a smile before i dug it .Would i dig it with CZ , you bet.
Just would have had the smile after i dug it HH Mike.

I have a 4" coil on my uMax and it takes care of that area well up to 5". The 5" does allow you to "trace" the target to judge size. Getting better with the 8" coil on tracing and telling trash. I got the 10.5 coil and P Pointing is a breeze. I just use the center of the X on the coil. I wear my control head on a belt so all coils are light. Cant wait to use it on a beach. Do I need to have the 3D "tuned" to work with all 3 coils and if so who could tune it. Would like to have it tuned for max depth on the 8 and 10.5 as I want to use this as my deep go to machine for coins and skip all but the old parks and homes. Thanks for looking.

Tom, I understand your CZ owners - Salt training 101 experiment, as it pertains to eddy currents and the conductance of gold , I came across a
link to a fellow that is using audio resonance to detect counterfeit coins in Japan. (http://www.nature.com/news/2008/080122/full/news.2008.518.html). The reason I ask this question is because since ground penetrating radar is
using RF frequencies (around 1GHZ) , would it, could it be feasible to concoct a metal detector that uses sound energy directed into the ground and listen for the reflected audio, (much like a PI) , by having it tune up and down a given frequency band until it reaches a the "resonant" frequency of the unknown target. I cannot find any relevant information, even if it has EVER been tried. I do know that audio in the human hearing range can be passively amplified via a small parabolic dish. Anyone with relevant info, please respond.
I called Fisher the other day and spoke to Daniel the engineer there. I told him that you have said that with sens. at 5 as per your settings that a dime should get about 11" in an air test. He told me no that the sens. set at 8, a dime should get about 9" and a quarter should get about 10-10.5 inches. I know that you helped develop or developed this detector and he basically called you a liar. If these settings are what the CZ-3D are calibrated for then this detector is definitely not worth the price they are asking for. Your comments on this please.

Hey there handy friends...
Here are two tips for long rainy summer evenings....

No 1 ---some time ago I converted our old CZ6a from the flimsy chest/-hip mounted model to a sturdy "Minelab Sovereign"
inspired Q.S.Ltd Edition.
With the control house now mounted upside-down on the underside of the stem-just below the detector stand I get good ergonomics and
optimal balance when the sweeping gets tough.

No 2 Spade shaping or how to make your own digging tool for soft ground or sandy conditions.
-for some years now I have made small single hand spades and probes from PVC- or c-PVC- tubes using a hot air gun to form or mould them into functional digging tools.
I use mostly dark grey "Pipelife"32x2.4 PN16 STS 430 cPVC which I get from my local firm "GPA" here in Ski in Norway.
With the help of a small fine cutting saw ,some fine and coarse files,a pair of thick leather gloves and a STEINEL 1750W
hot air gun I am able to make blunt or sharp, long or short, fat or slim-probes ,spades ,-sand tubes ,scoops, scrapers or whatever my fantasy wants me to test out.
-having tested different plastics I prefer the c-PVC for its ability to be hand shaped and not getting brittle in the process
check this link for more info: [www.gpa.nu] use the google toolbar for translation
thanks for loooking in and happy hunting...

Tom - Got your DVD and my CZ-3D yesterday (8 replies)

I received my DVD from you yesterday and also had my CZ-3D (serial# 10210441) delivered at the same time...Christmas in July!

I watched your DVD with great interest and have to say that it would certainly have helped me out when I had first started metal detecting earlier this year and I'd highly recommend it to any individuals just entering the hobby.

I understand you were using a CZ-3D for most the DVD and was wondering what mode you were hunting in during the Real World Hunt. I'm assuming because of the amount of iron present that you may have been using Normal mode as opposed to Enhanced mode but that's just an assumption on my part.

I performed a quick airtest on the CZ-3D using a clad dime and it appears to be fairly consistently picking the target up at distances of between 10" & 11". Keep in mind that I performed the airtest inside my home in the presence of lord knows how much EMI...although the CZ3D didn't chatter at all...unlike my F4 which would have been chirping like a bird on steroids. I know that the airtest is not a valid test to ascertain the CZ-3D's id capabilities but I"m curious....when airtesting a clad nickel, is it usual for the CZ-3D to ID as a square pull tab in Enhanced and Salt mode? It will be interesting to see how the ground matrix affects the units ID capabilities. I'm used to digging pull tabs so it's not the end of the world but it would a real treat to start hauling in clad nickels that read high-tone in the nickel range.

The tones on the CZ-3D are much more descriptive than they are on my F4 which doesn't have much if any deviation in any given tone. I think with time logged on the CZ-3D this is going to be a huge plus. Ground balance was a breeze...strangely enough...or not...the suggested preset of 5 for GB is exactly where it balances on the ground in my yard. I found 4 pennies in 5 minutes that I missed with my F4 and my Tesoro Compadre units and I've hunted that particular area at least 50 times already....very shallow at 2" so I'm curious as to why the CZ-3D picked 'em up and my other units did not...perhaps the CZ-3D resolves more efficiently in the presence of iron or other ferrous metals??

Lot's to learn with the CZ-3D and I'm looking forward to getting out for my first real hunt with it. I'm going to start by hitting all of my previously hunted areas to see what I've been missing with my other units.

Thanks for the DVD Tom and keep up the good work.

I have a spot that I've been hunting for a while. I first hit it with my F70 and Sovereign, and aside from a few shallow wheatbacks, I didn't find anything of interest. Then I picked up a CZ70 and it was like virgin territory. My first couple of hunts there I got several barber dimes, mercs, silver rosies, a SLQ, Victorian jewelery, Indian heads, a handful of teens wheatbacks, etc. I couldn't believe it, not sure how the Sovereign and the F70 missed these, but the CZ70 was pulling these coins up from depths of 7-8" with ease. Within a couple of months of getting my CZ70, I picked up the F75 LTD. I took it the my spot and again was pulling out barber dimes, mercs, silver rosies, Victorian jewelery, Indian heads, teens wheatbacks, etc. The quantity quickly diminished, but for quite a while I was able to pull some nice coins from this spot.

Then the finds started to dwindle, maybe a couple of early wheats per hunt, an occasional Indian head, V-nickle or buffalo nickle, but no silver for about five or six consecutive hunts. I'd still hit it when I'd go by it in hopes of finding one more barber, merc or Indian or perhaps the allusive 1909S-VDB wheatback (and this would be a great spot to find one, the copper comes out in GREAT shape). Interestingly the ground here had always been kept fairly moist to wet when I'd hunted it, but then a few months ago I hit it and the ground was bone dry. I was using my F75 LTD and in the course of about 45 minutes I pulled three mercs, a token, and a dozen early wheatbacks (six were in a pocket spill). I couldn't believe it, as I'd almost written it of for producing more silver (although in my heart I always knew there was more silver there, probably much more, either masked or possibly deeper). The next hunt I really dug the iffy/fringe targets, and it produced a sole barber dime and a little 10K gold child's or men's signet ring that was really iffy, bouncing from high iron to foil on the LTD. I had combed the area very thoroughly in disc mode on the F75 LTD (it's a small area, about 20'x60') and figured I'd probably about got everything I could get without going into all metal mode and digging every iron signal in hopes of finding the masked targets.

Last week I decided to try my Omega with the 11" DD at this spot. I didn't honestly expect to find too much with it. The ground was bone dry again, and the temp was over 100F so I kept my hunts short. The Omega ran rock solid at 99 sensitivity and I'm finding that I like 4-tones, it seems to do a good job replicating the CZ70's 4-tones, especially when it gets a deep silver or copper coin with it's faint audio ping, much like the CZ70 does when it hits a deep silver coin (it's music to my ears). The first hunt was impressive. The Omega scored an old buckle (not sure how the CZ70 and LTD missed that?), and 1920, 1927 & 1942 wheatbacks, plus an 1906 Indian. All the wheats and the IH were 7-8" deep. Although not stellar finds in themselves, I was pretty happy with them considering how hard I've hit this little area with some of Fishers best, and deepest machines. A few days later I returned, and my first target was a 1917 wheatback, nice! Then a few minutes later I got that faint ping, it was fairly repeatable 4-ways, and I figured I had another wheaback (if I recall correctly it was hitting in the 80's on the TID). I dug down, and at 8" deep I saw the back of a silver coin with that oh so familiar wreath design staring back at me in the bottom of the hole. I was stoked, another barber comes to life from this spot (a 1911S w/full Liberty to be exact)!! I managed to dig three more newer wheatbacks, and closed the day out with one more silver, a 1944S merc. The musket ball and flattened bullet also came from here.

So a hunted out site, hunted with the Omega, in the course of an hour and a half (two 45 minute hunts) produced seven wheatbacks, an Indian head, a Barber dime and a Mercury dime, not bad at all for a hunted out site and a midline metal detector

A couple of observations on the Omega - even at 99 sensitivity it's much more of a "silent search" machine then the LTD, no more chatter, clicks, chirps and pops, for the most part it only sounds off when there's actually a legit target under the coil, I LIKE THIS!! Even thought the F75 LTD and Omega have a similar physical layout, I actually find the Omega is more comfortable to swing for longer periods of time AND the angle of the screen is perfect (it's not on the LTD, I'm always twisting it around to see the display). The more I use the Omega, the more I like it's modulated audio. The one knock I'd have to give it is the depth meter seems to be a mess. From what I can see, the Omega seems to be just as capable as my CZ70 and my F75 LTD for coin shooting, although I'm not sure how deep MY Omega will go yet on say a silver dime (so far 8" has been the deepest, but I don't know if my coil's been over one deeper yet). If FT would add a trigger, backlight and BOOST mode to the Omega, they'd have the perfect machine :poke:

The next time I hunt this spot, I'll try the 10" elliptical concentric stock coil and see how she does, and if I can get a deal on a 5" DD I'll give that a shot as well.

Without further ado, here's my Omega finds from my hunted out site:
I understand that in the video actual hunting segment the ground and area aren't pristine but you use that same method except it seems that sometimes you go around but leave the flap. Wouldn't that be a better method anyway. To dig a large enough area so as not to kill the grass roots in a small area but also to leave a flap to help in preventing the grass from dying. What technique do you readers and followers of this forum use the most?

Hello everyone. I have been lurking for the past few weeks, and have gotten Tom's Beach and relic video, and the Coin hunt one is in the mail. Have only been detecting for a month now, and have nothing that would be exciting to report to you all yet.

Question: Wife and I are driving down to Myrtle Beach from Ontario, will be stopping at Watkins Glen for two days and then heading down. We are just going to hit motels and B&B's for our trip. I see the beach is very long, could some one suggest an area to set up camp near, either the north or south ends or the middle etc ?

I have a new 1280x (bought it before I found this site!) and will be bringing it with me. Have to be able to say "oh yeah, I detected the US East Coast". There is a chance I am going to pick up an Omega 8000 before we go, but might just have the one MD to use while there for our very short stay.

Appreciate any advice you can throw my way. This is a great site.

I received this message last December in regards to the F75.
Can you validate whether this is true or false?

One of the things Fisher misstated was that STAT MODE is for large deep objects.
It is a non motion target identification mode. It works great on coins/jewelry and civil war relics.
It is so deep that the motion all metal or discriminate modes cannot pick up targets it hits. Yes it hits every thing including all of the iron. But there is a secret to this mode that very few know. If you hit a bottle cap that the other modes want to accept as a coin, this mode will identify it, and other iron. Many times you will know its a good target and others you will have doubts. Simply scan the loop toward you and then away, and do this several times. Iron will cause EXTREME spreads in the targets identification, from the 90's to single digits. Conductive target i.d. numbers will stay the same. This is the only mode it works in correctly, but also if you scan side to side as normally you would do, the iron will fool the detector, in THIS mode. If you have some CW sites that have produced very small cuff buttons that read low, this should help in picking them out from nails. Deep bullets and other items that were previously too deep, you can now hit.
Also if you hunt projectiles, and want to hear all iron this should help produce a few, if you are experienced in this field, and know what a shell or bolt down deep sounds like.
The best way to set it up is to go to All Metal, then drop down and enter stat mode.
Do a fast grab ground balance, hold the loop up at least knee high, pull the trigger and hold it in pin point and go to the ground. If you don't have a perfect ground balance, go to manual ground and use it until you are satisfied.
Once you start hunting, try to keep the loop at the same level above the ground.
There is no auto tune built in, and it does drift because of that, so occasionally pull
the trigger to re tune the mode.
The STAT MODE is a CANNON.

This was sent to me about a year ago. I have never tried it, because I forgot about it. I might just give it a go.
