I didn't have a particular place picked out to detect today, so I drove around to a few different spots this morning. I ended up at a small field that I've hunted dozens of times as have others. It's a small grass field that slopes up to a tree line at about fifteen degrees. The field is small measuring about 200' x 300'. In the past we have found some oldies there. The last 3 or 4 times, nothing, but I keep getting drawn back.
This is only my second try with the cz3d at this spot, previous times I had the f-75.
The ground here is on the hot side...very little movement on the GB knob. The field is mostly rocks under the topsoil, hard to dig.
About two hours (nothing to show) into it, I get a nice short 'ting' high tone. Walked around the target, high tones all the way. I dug through the rocks and down six inches put the pinpointer in the hole, still in the hole. Stuck the handigger in the hole and popped out a smaller plug and the beautiful glint of silver, even on a cloudy day. 1781 half reale in very good shape...you never know.

I read a year ago something simular, but just the opposite, low number noise cancel was equal to lower frequencies on the Etrac, but in this video low noise cancel numbers were the higher frequency with the Explorer.

With all this talk lately of the "hot" 1021 3D's selling lately, I thought I'd look at the past correspondance with Tom regarding mine that I sent to him 2yrs ago. I had purchased off Finds from a good guy, unfortunately it had something loose in it and sent it immediately to Tom and he took care of it.
Hi Aaron,

One loose 6-32 x 1" metal screw floating inside control box.......posing a danger to the electronics when powered up. Good thing it did not short anything out. I've reinstalled it into circuit board and tightened all other screws. Your unit is a hot one. It air-tests a clad dime at exactly 12.0" in a EMI free area. Salt balance is exact. Quad-driver is perfectly balanced. Old-coins window was ever so slightly out.....not enough to worry about; however, I split hairs....so I dialed it back in to exacting specs. Nickel window is slightly over-zealous......but this one, I left it alone.....as this is exactly where I have my CZ's set at. It'll ID most new nickels (that have never corroded/never seen dirt) as a mid-tone with respective round-tab ID....BUT....the older-generation 'V' nickels, shield nickels and most buffalo nickels ....... in real dirt........ will ID as high-tone 'nickel'. If you want to find new nickels.... switch over to 'salt' mode.....and new nickels will then ID as high-tone 'nickel'.
Your deep target audio response is 'smeared'. This is the only remaining adjustment that I need to make. . . . then I will ship the unit back to you. This smeared response will cause the detector to 'false' quite a bit......and will miss the deep/fringe targets. Deep targets need to sound weak but 'crisp'. I expect to ship the unit back to you on Friday (tomorrow). Monies; I will COMPLETELY leave this one up to you! Only send what you feel is proper!

Sincerely,

Tom

Incredible service and on a donation basis, who does that? I hope those who are sending machines to him are gracious and generous in their appreciation. Toms time is very limited and valuble to him and his family.

Last spring I found a 3 cent peice with my V3i and was concerned that it registered as a pull tab instead of coin on my 1021 and told Tom about it and he asked me to send the coin and machine back to him.

To: Aaron
Aaron,

Your 3-C Ag coin ID's as a '50' on my F75 LTD. This is QUITE a bit lower than my coins. Very interesting.

You (now) have a very unique.....one-off/special/custom CZ-3D. I have re-cal'd the unit to ID the 3-Cent Ag coin as a 'high-tone'. Because of the fact that this coin is quite a bit lower in conductivity that anticipated............I have concern as to how much trash you will (now) recover....that'll ID as a 'high-tone'. It will be left up to your discriminating ear to discern 'what depth' you will recover high-tones. I also feel you will be in for a pleasant surprise. There's going to be quite a few more good targets that will now ID as a high-tone. (You will see).

I'm going to try to ship your unit out today also. The coin is inside the battery compartment. I almost taped it to the control box........so you would always have a standardized 'test-target' with you in the field.........should the need arise to test/verify the performance/ID of the unit. Let me know how this unit performs......and what type of interesting targets are recovered.......especially at depth.

This 10210609 is a very powerful unit. I ran a full validation/calibration on the unit just to make sure it is 'per design'. I recommend holding on to this unit. It is quite rare.

Sincerely,

Tom

I'm very proud of my 1021 3D, I consider it a even better coin machine than the Etrac. I dont care what the prices go up to on these older machines, you cant put a price a superior craftsmanship. If I could only have one machine...this would be it.

Thanks Tom.

Sincerely,

My F75 LTD while detecting the screen goes blank with the exception of the Batt. Ind. or if you hold it up straight out. Now if your sweeping and go over a target it comes right back or if you touch to controls or ADJ. the setting it will come back but then when you start sweeping again it will disappear. Now I posted this on a few forums and everyone says there display never goes away its there all the time . Fisher is telling me that's normal (a sleep mode), I'm saying it isn't. I ask them if there was some kind of "HOT KEY" setting that you could turn it on or off that we don't know about as users , he said all F75 work that way, the tech keeps saying the display is there when he goes to etc.etc and i'm telling thats right but don't do anything just sweep without a signal and it will go blank. Anyone have any ideas about this problem, this is the forth time this detector has gone back. just a couple of months ago it was sent back for a loose display cover and that's when this problem seemed to start. Hope Tom D looking, his advice helped me before. needs some info cause the detector is still at Fisher.

With an older Tesoro notch unit such as the Golden Sabre 11 might want to try what I call audio variances....its all done in pinpoint mode and as a junk target usually weighs less than the gold ring try a little experimenting.
Start with a large gold ring and a square tab where the variance is much more and work down to a small gold ring and a piece of foil or beaver tail....Ring will usually hold the tone longer as you swing the coil back and forth in slow sweeps sort of gold ring Beeeeeep-Beeeeeep versus Beep-Beep....takes some practice and learned and practiced on cold winter days. Certainly not 100 percent efficient but does cut down the odds and a large piece of foil, key, lead sinker or various heavier things may fool you.
Seems like in most newer bells and whistles high priced units the variances are gone but imagine most of our fellow forum member have their litle tricks to cut down the odds and perhaps we can have some further input.

Well been a mild winter here in N.E. Pa. and around 50 today so armed with my old Tesoro Toltec 11 with notch set so low foil to high nickle is low and dimes up is high ventured out in Jan for the first time in years...Pretty slim pickings in the local park but managed some clad including a Sac. dollar. Must have went over a 100 plus targets in the ring range but only dug 12 and got fooled by a large piece of foil, small key, lead sinker couple of old misshapen tabs and misc.heavier junk but right before I left dug that one that just sounded different and pulled a shallow 14 kt gold Claddagh irish ring. Was I lucky...sure was but thank goodness for audio variances in older Tesoro units. For those that think perhaps I missed another in the other 100 plus that I didn't dig...1 out of 12 is easy on the back and landscape and if I dug the other 100 might not have had time to go over this one and of course the trained ear took time as have used every Tesoro notch unit ever made. Sure a nice way to start the year and perhaps the next one will have a nice stone.

Tom did NOT ask me to make this post or to publicly endorse him. This is my doings. And I am doing it because I just figured that my fellow hobbyist should know how helpful it was to me. I prepared for my Phone session by having a few questions ready when Tom called. And Tom went way above and beyond my expectations. I can't wait to get back out to the square nail beds that I have been hunting to try out the stuff that I learned. This man KNOWS HIS STUFF when it comes to these detectors. I told Tom that in about three weeks, I was wanting to have another session. It really enriches the enjoyment of the sport to gain intelligence about the subject instead of merely turning on the detector, ground balancing it, and then just randomly striking out through the area with no plan or technique.
I just sit there and took notes while Tom answered all of my questions and then some. It was well worth the money spent. And on top of all that, he's a nice guy. I hope me posting this doesn't make Tom angry with me, but it's just my way of showing my appreciation AND, letting every other forum member know that it's cool as heck and will be beneficial to ya. I have been detecting since last March on a regular basis and started thinking that I had this thing pretty well figured out. LOL But after tonites phone session, I realize that I have got a long way to go. Thanks Tom. happy Hunting everyone.

In other words if you were at a newer site with a lot of modern clad would you want to use it in the salt mode so newer nickels would come in as nickels and zinc would come in as zinc? Can one be calibrated like this if not?

.........yep, managed to get out to the little park we hunted a few weeks ago.
See link:

This time, I hunted close to the old jail again. I figured if there was silver there before, there has to be more. I spent most of my time near here:

Halfway between the tree on the right & the stump in the middle of the pic was this target:

You may be thinking big deal. However, this one was a fun one to recover.

The bottom of this hole was about 10" deep & a 1" root has grown thru this target.
You can see it below:

Now remember...I'm in a city park & can only use that gator digger.
In fact, I couldn't even use the sawtooth blade.
There was no room to saw that root.
I had to place the digger in the center of the root & pound it thru.....

This is what came out of the hole......

Hmmm, pretty cool. Haven't dug one of them in a while. All together, I found no silver today.
Only a wheatie an indian head penny & some zincolns.
The CZ3D was hot on those nickels today.

Here's the total take after I cleaned up everything:

I cooked that stirrup this evening & will spray paint it tomorrow evening.
Then it goes in one of the display cases here at home.
It is still warm enough here in the midwest to detect.
Usually it's frozen this time of the year & hunting is almost impossible.
Man...how I love global warming!!

Thanks for looking.............see ya yardhunter

Volumn control on iron... (8 replies)

Tom...

In the "Looks like a serious metal detector" post, you mentioned that you have wanted ..."volume control over 'iron audio only'' for fisher detectors for many years. I have wondered about adding this feature to a CZ3D. Could not disc 0 and disc 1 be tied togather so that you would hear both disc 0 and disc 1 at the same time, and use a resistor to lower the volumn on disc 0 (which would be the the "channel" that is producing the iron tone grunt) to about 50%, while leaving the disc 1 circuit as is. If done correctly, the normal volumn control on the detector should still work as before with the added benefit of the disc 1 channel filtering out most of the iron, and disc 0 allowing the iron to sound out, but at a greatly reduced volumn compared to the total volumn of the two circuits combined.

I hope I said what I meant.

What would be involved in making such a mod to the 3D? It seems on the surface to be "fairly" simple, but so do many things in life until you get involved with them :-)

This, I believe, is an excellent example of the effect of co-located iron on a non-ferrous target. There was noticeable rust in the ground as I reached the target as well as attached to the target (and you can see it falling off).

The rusted iron in the vicinity rose the VID on the Fe side a full 50%, from 13 to 20 or so! For any detector, this drop will probably happen and most people don't dig these signals. I like the phrase from TheMarshal over at Finds - "They are metal rejectionists, not detectorists." ;-)

One can only imagine how much the VID can drop depending on the size, state, vicinity, etc. of the iron to the target.

Enjoy,
Albert

I noticed today while hunting in a trashy area that I cannot hunt with 3H or 3 or 4 tones without excessive falsing!! And this is with absolutely NO emi issue. I was hunting in a disc of 3 and a sensitivity of 99 in DE mode. It would start the EMI chatter in DP mode. But in 2F tones it wouldn't false. But if I clicked it up to 3 or 3H I would hear an internal hun or threshold commence. Then, I would sweep the ground and every sweep would cause Hi Tone falsing complete with hi numbers although a sweep in 2f revealed there was nothing but a few nails under the coil. In other words, trying to hunt in any TONE BUT 1, 1f, or 2F was next to impossible due to far too much falsing.
Question: Since I hear a threshold kick on when switching to 3 or 4 tones, are these tones somehow more sensitive than the much quieter running two tone??? Or has this post totally confused all who have tried to make sense of it. I did find a 1952 nickel today at a measured 9 inches!!!! In two tone. Which i wil likely hunt in from now on unless I am doing the ONE TONE and DISC 6 mode of unmasking.

I am a bit confused about which is the better silver machine. I have read many statements the F75 will unmask silver better then Minelabs and go as deep. So why does the majority think the Minelabs are better for finding silver? I realize the Minelabs are supposed to be better in highly mineralized soil but in moderate soils why would they be still better. I owned an Explorer SE for 3 years and found quite a bit of silver but also have found more silver in a shorter time with the F70 in the same hunting grounds. I have compared deep signals side by side with the Explorer SE and F70 and never have missed a signal that a Minelab has found. Having used both detectors I can't find an advantage in the Explorers over the Fisher F70/75. What am I missing?
