This is incredible. The answers are so simple.
If you don't like Friendly Forums, don't go there.
If you don't like Calabash videos, don't watch them.
If you don't like denizen X, don't read his posts.
But dragging all the dirty laundry to this forum and trashing it up is incredibly disrespectful to Mr. Dankowski and his forum.

One of Eric's greatest attributes was that he freely shared his knowledge with other people. He taught me and many others what he knew, so in reality his knowledge and contributions will continue on.

Update... in a related topic on the Friendly forum someone pointed out that MF designs can go deeper in MF mode than SF mode due to the subtraction method used to implement ground balance and salt cancel. This can be true (depending on the design and how DSP is implemented) because subtracting the reactive (ground) signals can increase headroom and allow you to run a higher gain. In SF mode you a

Maybe, maybe not. One thing about MF (any and all) is that it splits the transmit power amongst the transmitted frequencies. So, ferinstance, if you transmitted at 4 & 20 kHz it would never go as deep on big silver than 4kH

Keith, I gave it a try. Sorry to say, it appears that Disc mode uses a preset threshold level. I separated the Disc switch but saw no performance difference vs threshold level in Disc mode. Good thought, tho.

Keith, I've never tried that so I don't know. I would expect that engaging the Disc mode uses a preset threshold level but maybe not, maybe it uses the current threshold which happens to be minimum when Disc mode is engaged. I had a GB-Pro open on the bench last week, if I go back in I'll give it a try.
Nudge, that internal pot is indeed the GB trimmer.

The new model has the same iron disc as the old. The analog pot was replaced with a rotary encoder and display, and the toggle switches are now pushbuttons. The threshold control is more convenient on the new, but the headphone jack may be less so. The rotary encoder takes more turns if GB is way off but this is usually a rare case. Otherwise, performance is the same.

Take 90% of spot silver, that's the dream price. Coin dealers will offer 50-65% of this, dug coins will be on the lower end. You can probably get more on eBay but after subtracting eBay fees you may not be much ahead. All assuming what you have is "junk silver," that is, average circulated coins.

The V3 had this feature. You could connect the wireless headphones and still turn the speaker on and off. Unfortunately you could not put this option in the Quick menu and it took a few presses to get to it in the Big Menus.

Sorry, just saw your post. On the AQ I have no idea. We have just fixed a circuit failure mode but based on other problems I've seen in forums I would not recommend resuming production. It needs a mechanical redesign.

The Tarsacci uses time-domain sampling & processing to look at exponential decays. Most multifrequency designs use frequency-domain processing to extract phase information. The closest I've seen to time-domain processing is in the BBS/Sovereign design but even there it appears that the time-domainish sampling method is used to produce phase info, not decay info.
I would expect XP to h

Ignoring XP's wireless coils, there are 4 features that coil electronics deal with:

Those quick short sweeps are what you do after you've determined you want to take a closer look. When testing separation you need to use a normal sweep pattern. I typically use 1m/s and set the tempo with a metronome. In the 2nd video at 1:43 I see that CB does 3 slightly broader sweeps over both the nickel & b/c and there is barely a chirp. If that's not enough to make you pause fo

The Chinese rip the code image out of the micro of a real detector and use the image to replicate other micros. That's pretty easy, I can send a detector to China with 5 Ben Franklins and they will send me back the micro's code image.
But to modif

With most detectors the RX coil feeds a preamp, which then feeds 2 or more synchronous demodulators which convert the operational frequency to near-DC signals. This is where the term "IQ" comes from, one demod is clocked in-phase and the

Calabash, a few questions...
How does one go about reverse-engineering a direct-sampling metal detector?
Is the Legend direct sampling in the first place? Or does it use analog demods?
Is the Deus2 also a reverse-engineered Equinox?
The Equinox TX waveform is very White's-like... did ML poach ideas from White's?

Target separation vs distance from the coil is a matter of geometry plus magnetic curvature. With a dime and pull tab separated by 3" it is easy to get separate responses at close depths because only one target is in the peak response area at a time. And to help even more, the other target is in a hard curvature of the field and looks like an on-edge target, making it look weaker.
As the

Take an average paper staple, break off one of the legs... a decent PI will easily detect this. It can be maddening on a beach were every tiny shard of a fish hook remnant gives a nice loud response.

Bone conduction headphones have been around for quite a while. White's used it on a 1970s Amphibian.
A heads-up display has probably been batted around by all the detector companies; I know that we discussed it at White's and at FTP. And a HUD was implemented on a metal detector by (I think) OKM in Germany maybe 10 yrs ago. Most likely whatever you can do with a HUD you will still wa

The pic I've seen of the new remote housing shows that it has a 5-pin M8 or M12 connector. This suggests that maybe there will be hardwired coils available for water hunting.
