I hope y'all will excuse my language for just a moment.
If you're the kind of guy that likes to preach, ruffle feathers and stir sh!t up on a regular basis by putting down other forum members and/or their equipment it doesn't matter how many cool finds you post or how much you tout your own wisdom. At the end of the day you're still just a guy standing around preaching to

I live and detect in East Tennessee and it's been my experience that if you avoid all national parks as well as any area that might be remotely considered to have any archeological value you should be good to go. I worked for the Knox County Dept. of Parks and Recreation many years ago and all city and county parks were, and to the extent of my knowledge still are, fair game. If the county P

Tom, while we're discussing the Tarsacci's Disc. circuit and it's functions, what spawned the decision to use only linear discrimination for the -30 to 0 range and only notch discrimination for the 0 to +30 range rather than having both types of discrimination available for both Disc. ranges?

Dew, once the Disc setting gets above 0 it acts like a notch control. I took this straight from the manual.
"If the Discrimination set point lies within the range of 0 to +30, any Target with a Target ID lower than 0 shall be silenced and any Target within the range of +/-2 of the Discrimination set point shall also be silenced. (Numerical Target ID is always present)"

Tom your last post left me a little confused. Keeping in mind that I'm an inland hunter, are the rocky areas that Badger said he is hunting not dry sand/soil? If so why would you use the GB setting to balance out the hot rocks rather than the Salt setting like the manual recommends?
FWIW, and I may have mentioned this already, I've also noticed that even though the Tarsacci seems to

It depends on my frame of mind. If I'm wound up or, twitchy as my wife calls it, and I just want to go out and hunt at a leisurely pace while listening to the wildlife and trying to relax the last thing I want is a sparky detector with a lot of user adjustable functions and controls to fiddle with. The combination of a single cup headphone paired with a "simple", slow swing detect

Bors, always remember that there's more than one way to skin a cat or a hen pecking woman for that matter.
I've known some wise old rooster's that were all too happy to sit back and endure the hen's pecking until she established "control" over the entire hen house. At this point in the "game" a wise rooster will give his hen the freedom and rope she need

Just like the CZ-3D I recently started a thread about, this is one (or three) detector(s) I should've never let go. My most recent Nauty was a hot one mounted on a White's rod with the 6", 10" & 15" coils. If memory serves me correctly I traded it in on my EQ800. Don't get me wrong, the Nox is a great detector but I've had three Nautys and I have ended up ki

While the prices of detectors, both new and used, are down; I'd have to say that at $650 a used, Tom tuned CZ-3D is holding it's value far better than most if not all of it's competition. That's something you've gotta be proud of Tom.
Considering there were three coils bundled with the 3D that was the inspiration for this thread and that the bundle sold for less than $8

Reading David's messages jogged my memory. If I remember right Paul only had the unit for a couple of weeks. He had one or more of the coils sold before he even got them.
The unit was 100% functional when I shipped it to him. I can't imagine what happened to it that would have resulted in the need to send it in for repair. It was a very stable and hot detector after Tom worked his ma

"Detectoritis" that's a great term Druid. I'm the same way. Back when I played guitar we referred to it as GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome). No matter what you call it, it tends to be hard on your wallet and on occasion your marriage.

I realize that this is the mother of all long shots but here goes. Back in 2011 I had Tom tune a 3D and then ended up selling it with the 12", 8" and 5" coils a few months later. It's one of many units I've sold that I still regret selling.
Paul, he goes by Hungarian on the forum, bought it and immediately separated the bundle and flipped it. I don't know who bou

Badger asked about how the Tarsacci handles hot rocks. Dimitar brought that up in our last conversation. He said that you should use the Salt setting to salt balance the detector to the hot rock. Apparently doing so doesn't simply filter out the hot rock, it renders the hot rock nonexistent to the detector.

As Daniel said in an earlier post we tested the Tarsacci on his bullet field a few days ago with what I would call mixed results. Due to my lack of experience with it in "real world" scenarios and subsequent conversations with both Tom and Dimitar I'm not going to say much more than that about this hunt at this time. I'll fill in the details after I've got a better feel f

You've gotta love Keith's "You never know whats around the corner..." comments with the little smiley guy winking at you. If he didn't seem to have his finger on the pulse of the detector industry I probably wouldn't think twice about it. As it is though.....you gotta wonder.

All of the discussion about Tesoro's impending doom caused me to take a look at their product line from the beginning to what sadly seems to be the end. I've owned a lot of detectors but never a Tesoro. It's not because I thought they were antiquated. I've got a few "switch and knob only" classics that still see at least semi-regular use just never a Tesoro. I search

Now that is what I call one FINE piece of down home engineering. Keith are you sure you weren't a design engineer in a former life. If not, you missed your calling. Modifying that grip upright to accept a 90 deg. conduit elbow was genius and it ended up slicker'n a minner's pete... well, you know what I'm trying to say.
The next time I get the hankering to mod something rat

Correct me if I'm wrong but at one time was this forum not a safe haven for people who loved to discuss metal detectors, metal detecting and the science and technology behind it while avoiding all the drama among other things that occurs on many of the other metal detecting forums?
As I've said previously I had to take a break from detecting for a while. When I came back to the forum

Tom, being ignorant as far as what is happening technologically under the hood of the MDT and given that it's main purpose is to ID at depth in salt or highly mineralized dirt, wouldn't using a bigger coil be counterintuitive?
Like you've stated previously, a larger coil equals more "hot" dirt that has to be compensated for in any given position along the arc of a sin

I owe all of you guys an apology. I was lucky enough to get one of the first detectors that shipped. An over abundance of rain kept me in the first week and a half-ish. A trip scheduled for today to Daniel's neck of the woods was called on account of pneumonia. I'll tell you, a day spent detecting no matter what the purpose is far better than a day spent in the ER.

My last post went up at 01:08 last night/this morning. Evidently I was more sleepy than I thought at the time because I left out a couple of key details.
One of them is in regard Tom's statements after my last post . While the Target ID did bounce both at depth and after recovering the ball it never got close to the iron range which at 11" plus in this dirt is impressive. Also, the r

Today was the first day since receiving the Tarsacci that I was able to go detecting and it wasn't raining. I can only hunt on one of my current permissions this soon after a heavy rain and it still had standing water in places.
More important than my sole find, I'll explain that below, I also "discovered" something that I don't remember having read here or in the man

Just for kicks I took my MDT out onto my deck this afternoon to try Keith's "dime between the boards" test. I have a clad dime and quarter, a nickel and a zinc penny glued in various locations between the boards of my deck. I tried all the frequencies with various sweep speeds and levels of disc. etc.
Keep in mind Tom's previous statement that the MDT wasn't designed t

I'm still stuck inside and inside for me means serious EMI so I've not been able to do any air testing as of yet. One thing I have noticed while waving various targets in front of the coil is that the MIX mode, although digital, is very similar the Nautilus DMC detectors in the way it functions. That is to say the longer the all metal report is before the disc report starts the greater

Will do Daniel. I'm beginning to wonder if the rain is going to stop. As I was backstroking out of my driveway this afternoon I saw my neighbor building what looks like a large wooden boat while his wife was wrangling all kinds of animals. Now that I think about they were all in pairs.....

Yes Pimento, that's a wing nut on the coil bolt. You're going to really have to crank on it in order to break it. Even if you manage to do so, they've put an extra set in the box.

In the interest of continuity I thought it best to post this in this thread. Tom and Wally, feel free to move it wherever you see fit.
My MDT arrived today and my first thought was the box it was shipped in is awfully small. I'm normally cynical and don't get too excited when waiting for a new gadget to arrive especially when there isn't a lot of info floating around the web to

Has anyone that has used the 8000 also had experience with any of the Nautilus DMC detectors? If so, how similar is the 8000's mixed mode to that of the Nautilus? Specifically the delay, if any, between the beginning of the all metal circuit's audio report and the disc circuit's audio report on the Nautilus is very telling. If the two sound simultaneously chances are it's a no
