I have to cast another vote for the Eneloops. I switched to them 5+ years ago in all my detectors and they work great. My V3i really goes through batteries, and I have two 8x AA battery holders that I take to the field and swap out battery holders when the first drains. Two sets of 8x AA Eneloops have always gotten me through as long of a day as I care to spend detecting. One set gets me thr

I sold some land mobile radio equipment on eBay a few weeks ago - my first sale on eBay since the new bank account requirement - that's when I learned of their new policy. eBay is holding my money until I provide them with all my account information.
I just spoke with eBay customer service explaining that I was not willing to provide them all my private bank account information and per

I've been selling on eBay on & off for almost 20 years, but when they started requiring direct access to my bank account, that's when I said 'No Thanks.' They wanted routing numbers, all kinds of approvals for letting them directly access my bank account to make deposits, and if you read the fine print withdrawals including to settle disputes. Hell no am I going to allow

I've been detecting for 40 plus years and remember what it was like in the old days. I started with a Whites 2db and knew almost nothing beyond the basic operation from the manual. Not knowing any better, I hunted with the disc way up, and TR being TR, that meant I had an effective depth of about 2 inches. I started hunting my own 1920's-era elementary school where I was a sixth grad

Thanks for the report coinspader. The V3i is a really underappreciated detector. It has a well-deserved reputation for being confusingly complex, but for those that have the patience to really learn it, it's an excellent detector. Some people don't like the complexity they just want to go out and find stuff. Others have lots of fun experimenting with all the settings and learning ho

The big advantage to the IDX Pro is the slow sweep speed required for good depth and discrimination. You can inch along in the trash at a ridiculously slow speed and the detector still performs excellently in discrimination mode. No other detector can move so slowly and still work properly. With the 6" concentric, it's especially good. The recovery speed and separation ability has t

This is also the same coil that was on the 6000XL and XL Pro, so you could expand your search and maybe get some hits. But it's probably going to e pretty hard to find that coil by itself unless someone has another coil they prefer on their machine and is willing to sell their original 950.
I looked up the ebay listing and thought, wow, he'll never get that for an IDX Pro, but the

I keep going back to the White's MXT. This is after owning and using extensively the Equinox 800, CTX 3030, V3i, DFX, Gold Bug Pro, Omega 8000, and several others *after* using the MXT. Those are all good detectors, but the MXT just has a great balance between complexity and raw performance that is unmatched by any other detector I've used. The way I look at it, it gets 90%+ of the p

Yep, and another question answered: it is NOT waterproof.
The coil is waterproof but not the control housing which is only "water resistant." Probably a good move for product di

Try the 10x12 SEF or the Ultimate 13. I have both for my MXT and they are good coils that will go deep. The U13 probably goes a tiny bit deeper, but the 10x12 SEF gets a little better separation at depth. The difference between them is very slight though, as they both perform very similarly. You can't go wrong with either one.

Harold, it's a really great machine, but has some limitations. Plusses are the 3-frequency pinpoint. You can pick through closely spaced trash in non-motion mode as slow as you want to go and see the relative strength of the frequencies change as you sweep over individual targets. It's a real hoot to see the frequency bars flip from blue to green as you slowly sweep across a pull tab

My White's V3i easily IDs bottle caps. In 3 frequency pinpoint mode, if the dominant frequency is 22.5, then it's a bottlecap. This method is fast and reliable. One of the main reasons I sold my Equinox and went back to the V3i.

Thanks tnsharpshooter. I tried the link and the search feature, and you *can* still search the old posts. You can't browse the old posts, but at least they are still there and come up when you search for them using findmall's built-in search tool. It happened a month or so ago. No warning, just gone one day. I was a member there for a looong time. They did have a strict posting policy that got some of my posts deleted for no apparent reason, but somehow I never got banned. The scuttlebutt I've been hearing is that White's got tired of paying their extortion fee, and I don't blame them. At least that might mean that White

The advantages are already well covered.
From first hand experience as an owner, I found the two biggest disadvantages are: 1) very nose heavy and does not balance well, which makes it actually more tiring to swing than many heavier but better balanced detectors such as the CTX. If there was some way to have put the battery under the arm cuff, that would have made it much better balanced,

One of the all-time greatest detectors. Super in iron and can be swept really slow to work in the thick trash. This is a great deal for somebody.

Dan, if you can live without the tones, then the MXT performs just as good as the MXT Pro. On the MXT you can put it in relic mode and get two tones, one for below the disc set point, and another tone for above the disc set point. If you turn the disc control all the way down, then you get one tone for ferrous and one for non-ferrous. I find that this is all I really need and just use the VDI

Iron ID, going back to the topic, is where the smartscreen really helps. Yes, you can also get similar information from the audio if you know what to look for, but even then, the machine can't present as much real-time information on what it is seeing as a smartscreen can in one or more sweeps. And you can sometimes get useful target information from how the numerical VDI bounces around, e

You should be able to buy an MXT in decent shape for $400. Like new or still unused new in the box (but being resold by the original purchaser) would be $500-600. Beaters that have seen a lot of miles but still work fine go for around $300-350. That’s just for the detector with the stock coil. Add a second coil, like the 6x10 or the 5.3, and you can add about $50 to the above prices.
