Hi Kevin,
I really enjoy your posts. In addition to what has been said above, I’ll give you some background information, make a suggestion or two, and tell you what happens here when doing similar tests over disturbed ground targets in a testplot. Maybe it’ll help you sort things out…and hope I’ve not overlooked anything obvious… but first a question…
As regards your 705… when you ground b

Thanks tnsharpshooter for making the effort to post a very well-explained side-by-side comparison. From your description it would appear that the limiting factor to using higher sens levels on the F75se was EMI. There should be considerably more target signal 'boost' / depth if a higher sens could have been used.
As an owner of the original F75... I've often wondered about the

Me too!!!! Excellent knowledge base, enthusiastic / forthright discussion, mutual respect, great camaraderie / ample good humor. Tom does a terrific managerial job, keeps the forum on track, and is otherwise a splendid fellow. Although not a relic hunter... with little to contribute in that specific regard... nonetheless I look forward to tuning-in here whenever possible. Thanks to all of you...

WTG GeorgiaCanuck... I love to see our older coinage, especially the silver coins. Best of all, those old Vicky and Edward silver coins. I agree with you... I want my silver to shine and look like treasure!!! Best regards from a fellow Canuck...

kai_gold... everything Tom has said goes for me too. Good scientific approach, a lot of work and preparation, plus videos to present your findings to the rest of us. You've done a splendid job and we appreciate it... thankyou.

Hi Dave....welcome to the forum.
I experienced the same problem when prospecting this past autumn. And I thought "Oh no...this is all I need out here in the middle of nowhere". But I found at least one of the batteries was not properly seated after a lot of use. It would work fine initially but then jiggle loose. The answer... those cloth battery tabs used to pull out the batteries..

Keith....looking forward to your results... please put it on video if that would be possible? I'm no relic hunter but do search for native silver in highly mineralized, iron-infested ground. We have a lot in common. I follow these topics with great interest... particularly the Deus and GMP threads. Your instructive videos and comments are very much appreciated up here in Canada. Many thanks.

Hi Pimento....

"I posted the graph mainly to see if it agreed with anyone else's experience. The fact that some report no such performance change, and some just see a change from Disc 4 to disc 5 concerned me. If it's relevant, my machine is an early one (2007)."

Hi Pimento….
From your graph... I think we can agree that there’s quite a reduction in detection depth over the upper-half of the iron range that can be attributed to decreased gain levels. Otherwise we’d see continual, more linear detection depth reductions right across the graph as discrimination increases. But that is not the case. Instead we see a dramatic decrease in detection depth headi

Hi Ramer…
Using the monotone in concert with a discrimination setting of “6” in the DE or PF modes to eliminate or break-up signals from small iron tidbits is an advanced technique particularly useful to relic hunters searching in high iron junk density sites. As noted in a previous post, it is not for everyone because the technique does test your tolerance to noise / chatter. Moreover it is m

Thanks Keith for posting the video. It allows me to see what you are doing in the woods relic hunting in a different part of the country, and to view an unfamiliar detector. Lots of good useful information...thoroughly enjoyed your narrative throughout... a real pleasure to view. Thanks for this effort... your iron analyses are important and very similar when searching for silver nuggets / ores u

Well Mike you’ve made an excellent post…we all love the hobby, a new unit is something to look forward to, and we tend to be amenable to the manufacturers’ advertising hype. I certainly do understand your feelings on the matter. I agree with the above comments, some of the guys may have played the game…but they knew it full well. Hello Tom...
I doubt you want to hear this yet again but it can't be avoided. I just finished watching your wonderful video about real world metal detecting techniques and absolutely loved every moment. It has been an interesting saga, considering the promise surrounding this new alleged technology. To date, we have not seen any performance reports or information by any independent source…only chatter on a few forums by the designer. In factual evidence we don’t have a clue as to whether this unit performs as described.
On his own initiative at least, and for whatever reasons, the designer h

Tri…I have not done any documented testing on targets between dry and moist dirt conditions. I agree with the posts above generally but will emphasize that metal detector responses to whatever ground minerals with variable soil moisture levels can be site specific. Some examples…

Tom, we'll have to keep you in mind this autumn while prospecting. No promises... but I think it worthwhile to gather some common minerals and hotrocks from our area to add to your reference material. Better to have them and not need them than vice-versa. Besides...I suspect we've a potential rockhunter in our midst. Thanks again and all the very best...

Tom...I've quoted you below. I don't know how I missed seeing this post!!! My only excuse is that I did come down with the flu twice over the winter and didn't monitor as regularly as usual. These results are remarkable even if one ignores the all-metal air test data. I presume these results are from testing the stock 11" coil. Don't want to say anything more for the mome

Thanks Keith for the additional information on the larger SEF coil. I guess we all look for any advantage to give us an edge, and your results surely indicate these coils make a significant difference to target response and ID. As to coil size I don't believe I'd want to swing 15"X 18" for long, but the next smaller size might work out OK...depending on the terrain.

Hi Tom…yes I agree with you about balancing over hotrocks by and large…but that was not my reason for wanting the GB numbers on the brick. I was curious to see how the GB readouts compared between coils, and second…to see how the Eclipse performed after ground balancing over the brick. In fact I duplicated the test on a red brick here with the Eclipse DD / MXT with the same result.
That aside…

Hi Tom...yes I agree it is interesting regarding the SEF and brick / hotrock result...but I'd like to know why. It might be interesting to see where the ground phase reads with each coil ground balanced over the brick or over any substrate. That maybe grasping at straws....to wonder if the SEF coils GB was lower than that produced using the Eclipse DD....yet it is information I'd like t

Keith...interesting video, well done. Your point is well taken where a target is influenced by a 'hotrock'. The SEF coil responds much better, and the red clay brick is acting just as you described....a 'hotrock'.
Now let's look at this a bit differently and now presume the brick represents the soil minerals in a given area. Checking both coils again but ground balanc

The coil used for most of the report is the stock 12" dual field. The unit used is the TDI Pro...the most recent model available currently.
