Thanks for confirming Tom. We rockhunters will appreciate this new dimension added to the forum!!
I have a sneaking suspicion that one trip to the Ontario outback would have dramatic effects here...

Tom...no I don't have a gold nugget in the one gram range at present. Leave it with me, I'll check around and see what I can acquire. Meanwhile, I have plenty of silver in any size range I'll gladly send you. Nuggets, and / or silver-calcite specimens. There is no charge Tom, I could not accept a cent after all you have done for everyone here. I will get back to you when I know more

Thanks Tom, appreciate that you are looking into this unit. Its flat iron tone ID interests me a good deal for searching iron-ridden mining camps.
It would be interesting to learn what kind of sensitivity this unit has on gram size and less targets. Say as compared to the F75 original model in JE mode. Thanks for anything you might advise if you can find the time to test some small targets. R

Fair enough statement Tom, I understand your rationale. I'll look forward to your results. Should the test data indicate a significant (what will "significant" represent?) improvement responding to low conductive, relatively small targets (in this instance the $1 gold coin)...otherwise in concert with a minimum of 1st generation F-75 capabilities...that's a unit I'll doub

Tom, why not test two dissimilar conductive standards that are more familiar to most hobbyists...such as a nickel and a silver dime? The silver dime does not have the ideal conductive resonance, but it does closely reflect real world coin hunting objectives.
It seems that I've read here or on a different thread that one difference between these units is that LTD will give a lengthier sign

Tom,
Just returned from a long prospecting trip. Things went very well, I feel fresh and fully restored.
Tuned in here of course ASAP. I would like to add my deep appreciation and heartfelt thanks for all you have achieved through your good works. Your number one fan and supporter...seldom heard but always near.

Hi James,
Just delighted to learn you've been out with the family looking at gems. North Carolina is the place to be from all I've read. Everything under the sun, including good gold. I expect one day Joanne and I will down to see you folks, and have a peek around Boone County for relics.
Now as to gems, I've been thinking of a portable UV shortwave light for sapphires and ru

Tom, thankyou. I sometimes wonder if I don't enjoy testing detectors against various minerals as much as searching for them. My earliest recollections of childhood interests recall a fascination with varius rock minerals. Thus, the use of a metal detector later in life seems a perfectly natural venue. A passion and doubtless, an obsession. Since I enjoy it thoroughly, it must be a healthy pu

Thanks Tom,
The F-75's chief concern among users/potential purchasers has been operational instability. Instability caused from the units inherently high sensitivity to the effects primarily of EMI, and soil minerals. We can manipulate our settings wrt to disc/gain and sensitivity, use of smaller coils or flipping over to motion all-metal...to deal with these "instability" facto

Hi Everyone,
Here’s a topic that might be interesting...
We often see that F-75 owners and others seem inclined to operate in “0” discrimination at times, in an attempt to maximize depth and hear all signals. I wonder if using zero discrimination leaves the unit vulnerable to increased ground noise or “chatter” (maybe a further source of instability), a condition perhaps enhanced as the so

Thanks Mark, I probably should've included more on iron mineralization wrt ground phase vs Fe3O4 readings, but that can always be discussed in a forthcoming, more applicable essay on gold prospecting with the F-75...and in conjunction with sluicing as well.

Hi Everyone,
After receiving a few more requests lately wrt viewing the original, illustrated article, I've reposted it on a different forum (mostly because I know how to easily post pictures there). Frankly I'm surprised but pleased that some hobbyists have shown an interest. Its been five/six months since it has been available to viewers at that location, but then I'm also awa

Thanks Lance, I just got back from a wet, cold, abbreviated camping trip. Nothing but pouring rain. I have returned your PM tonight, again with sincere thanks for the further information. BTW, I cut slots and added velcro straps to my armrest, but need to do something similar to ensure the unit stays reasonably dry while doing streamwork. Later,
Jim.

Hi SRLance,
I apologize for not replying sooner. The wife and I have been packing the camper for a trip north so we've been busy..so many little things to think about. There's a number of topics I'd enjoy discussing with you regarding your gold hunting in California, but I think it'll have to wait for another time.
For example, I've been wondering what influenced yo

Hi SRLance,
I'm over here in Ontario where I've searched for silver ores/nuggets for some 24 years. Usually for a week or so in the autumn until I recently took early retirement. Now, September/October are devoted to this pursuit.
Silver is not gold in terms of bullion value, but two factors help alleviate that condition..(a) the silver can be found commonly in multi-oz up to mul

Hi SRLance,
Welcome to the forum, its great to have another "rock" hunter aboard. I agree with you, its a good idea to keep it simple when operating the F-75. NASA Tom has an acronym for this philosophy..."KISS"..."Keep It Simple Stupid" and at times some of us analytical types can benefit from keeping this in mind.
Please don't hesitate to post your nugge

Hi Mark,
Depending on the EMI levels in any given location, yes the "12" disc setting makes a difference in stability and quieter operation. If hunting in undisturbed ground where foil elimination is desirable (personal preference) the unit's stability will increase substantially. As discussed on our PM exchange today, fortunately the benefits of JE mode are mostly applicable to

Hi Mark/Liquid/Kirk,
Was out in the garden thinking about the above post oddly enough. I got to wondering if a rationale might be useful as to why I recommend a small iron discrimination of "12" while using JE mode for prospecting.
Yes, lower disc #'s will eliminate/break-up various small iron pieces no doubt. A disc setting of "12" is the highest "safe" i

Liquid/Mark/NASA Tom,
Tom, two more members have asked me to provide the PM information sent to Kirk earlier. I think perhaps that I was mistaken not to have posted it at that time. Please keep in mind that I am certainly no “expert” by any stretch, but rather…a hobbyist who enjoys searching for valuable “rocks” in natural environs while trying to improve search techniques. Fortunately, we hobbyists exist in an informational community. I suppose the challenge is to distinguish good from not so good information, no matter how well intentioned. That said, we all can err on occasion. I do frequently, just ask my wife!!

Hi Kickback,
Bill, about the Fe3O4 bar graph and how it should be interpreted by comparison with the ground phase equivalent GB scale readout. I wondered if you might be looking for a more detailed overview. The following represents my understanding on the subject, based on testing various iron minerals over the years.
The bar graph indicates magnetic susceptibility only (dependent upon bot

Hi Kirk...you're welcome, lets hope it will be useful sometime down the road. Its a pleasure to discuss F-75/prospecting applications, and good to learn there are a few other rockhunters (liquid1 is another) here on the forum. Good luck and HH.....Jim.

Well Jeb, let's just say I've elected to adopt Tom's KISS (kEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID) strategy.
In short, view the ground phase as a simple "target" measurement based on phase shift..in the same manner you would view any other target ID for discrimination purposes...and adjust ground balance accordingly.
