Hi Tom,
Tom, thankyou very much for bringing this question into perspective.
I derive from your remarks in a sense that I've answered my own question... that we should simply view the ground phase as just that...a ground mineral phase shift measurement...regardless of what specific iron mineral types predominate to give rise to any particular phase shift reading. And further view the

Hi Tom,
Tom, if we consider that magnetic susceptibility (as expressed on the F-75 as a % magnetite by volume) describes the relative "toughness" of the non-conductive iron minerals in terms of metal detection performance, for example...depth ability...then how do we view the ground phase measurement?
In practical terms, how do we interpret ground phase as expressed by the ground

Hi Jackpine,
Your question below...
"What minimum amount of battery life (time) would you accept in a machine that blows everything currently available out of the water?? On AA batteries."
As an absolute minimum, how about 4 hours on 8 "AA" batteries? That would not be my preference, but for better results...especially depth...that's it.
Doubtless Kickback,

Thankyou Tom.
Tom, I read over a 105 page report from an independent consortium that claimed greater soil depths over air depths. This allegation did not look right to me. After reading through it, I discovered some key, invalid methodologies as to how the tests were conducted.
I reported my views last night, but I am ever so grateful for your input. We are indeed fortunate to have your ex

Thankyou Tom. For future reference this thread will be easy to identify. I fully intend to refer members from other forums to this site, as this topic seems to be a matter of dispute to many newer users of these units.
I appreciate you taking the time to go over "old material" Tom. Thankyou ever so much.

Hi Tom,
I've recently read a claim that some types of detectors are capable of responding more deeply on a target in the ground (without reference to ground phase/magnetite BTW) than on the same target in the air. Such targets would include iron as well.
At such times I wish I had an electronics engineering background in order to better evaluate such statements. What do you say? Thanks

Tom,
There is a great deal of controversy among new users wrt which of these coils outperforms the other on the F-70/75 in trashy ground, high mineral ground...in terms of target separation, depth experienced, target ID/discrimination.
We know you've covered this in the past at length. I've searched way back through the postings and short of reading every thread, I can't find

Hi Tom,
Below is a description of two consecutive outings by a new F-70 owner. Other than the usual advice re: hunting in trashy areas, especially burned over areas wrt mineral falsing (including cinders/coal, hot rocks due to fire oxidation), false positives between iron targets, disseminated rusty iron below the surface…and so on…I cannot help the man. He does not live nearby and I have not

Ron, I agree it would have been convenient, and even necessary under some conditions to have tracking. Did you give the "continuous balance" a try? Not quite the same thing we want, but better than a kick in the pants. It seems to work well in its motion all metal mode. Fine for prospecting/rock hunting, and it seems to be very quick.
Jim.

Hey Ron, how about a manual override ie. trac offset included with autotracking. For example, the ability to run tracking up to 5 full GB units plus/minus of correct GB. GB stable or variable ground = positive offset; positive hot rocks = negative offset.
We also need to ensure autotrack can be shut-off when in trigger pulled pinpoint mode. We don't want to risk tracking out small targets

Streak thanks very much for the test results. If you have a chance, could you provide the approx. measurements of your nugget (physical size)? Secondly, how does your 6 1/2" elliptical respond depthwise?
Appreciate anything you can provide Streak, with thanks,
Jim.

Tom & Turtleman,
The Canadian nickels I planted in the test garden are all pre-1981 nickel composition nickels. Pure nickel. Nickels made from 1982 to 1999 are .75 copper/.25 nickel, while from 2000 forward we are told all nickels are .945 steel/.035 copper with a nickel plating. Some nickels in that time range are composed differently as indicated by their lack of magnetism.

Hi Tom,
your comment...
"make a truly "multi-purpose" unit circumventing the requirement of owning several different detectors for specific applications because (now) you indeed have a all-in-one unit; you have trumped the playing field."
Yes indeed, and Tom isn't this precisely what the F-75 has been achieving just lately? Now that the complaints have died down

Tom, I feel that many of the features so necessary to the successful coin/relic hunter can also be quite useful for electronic prospecting pursuits. We should keep in mind that many electronic prospecters also pursue other detecting interests wrt coin/relic hunting. Having this "all around" capability in one unit is a windfall.
Much electronic prospecting occurs in harsh iron mineral

Tom,
I'd like to see:
(a) ground tracking included to handle variable, tough mineralization
(b) manually adjustable threshold retune (SAT)
(c) if it's two frequency, the ability to shut off either frequency ie DFX
(d) improved bad ground mineral performance
Unless of course they provide a new prospecting unit that has all the current F-75 capability in addition to the above s

James, the F-75 performed just fine prospecting. As noted above...absolutely no instability at any time...even in close proximity to those huge transmission towers. Dead quiet.
By the time the wife arrived some three weeks later, I let her use the 75 in PF mode with full iron disc, sens started off at 60....a modest set-up for a novice searching a trashy area. She's never been much intere

Thanks Tom, it's good to be back here again. The opportunity to finally put the F-75 through it's paces in a prospecting environment, and conduct a few simple tests while on site was instructive. Thanks for compiling this information Tom. Your research efforts make for very instructive reading, and valuable practical field applications. While I have not posted recently (warm weather travelling), I am present whenever possible, always reading and learning.

Hi NASA Tom and Everyone,
I fully agree with the above comments regarding the involvement of young people into this fascinating hobby/interest.
They say that the "stable family unit" is the foundation/basis of a stable society, and that IMHO, is just the place to build this hobby while pursuing healthy outdoor family activities.
Accordingly, whether prospecting to the far north

Hi Tom....thankyou very much for a most interesting discussion. I think that about covers my questions for now. I've been observing that the disc settings for JE mode vs the PF/DE modes is quite different for identical "in the ground" target conductivities, at least in reference to iron and other low conductive targets...have not checked higher conductivities yet, but will do so.

James: Yes, but it's painstaking work, and rarely does anyone hit a bonanaz anymore in accessible areas. The oldtimers were adept at following float/placer trains back to source, but not entirely thorough at cleaning-up deposits. Best to view prospecting as an enjoyable hobby with the great outdoors health benefits.

Hi NASA Tom,
I appreciate your comments, and did expect/invite "conversation", with no expectation of earth-shattering declarations. Hi EZ and James,
Used the standard 7"X 11" DD coil; don't have the smaller coil just yet. Probably temporarily a good thing, since I want to focus on the standard coil for now. EZ I think we both can anticipate how the smaller coil would perform, but without direct experience on this unit with the smaller coil, I prefer not to speculate. We see too much of that on other forums a

Hi NASA Tom,
Thanks very much for that detailed response. Most kind, but I'm certain there is so much more to learn about this unit. A great deal of GB experimentation is needed on different target conductivities under my ground mineral conditions to see what if anything can be achieved or learned...especially wrt to modifying/eliminating iron falsing...if possible...in iron infested site

Hi James,
Yes it would be fair to say the F-75 is becoming a fast favourite. It takes some time to adjust to something different from the "traditional" units of the past, but now the old units no longer "feel right" anymore, so I've changed.
The question to Tom is not phrased well, and may not be a fair question. I'd like to know why does JE mode outperform the

Hi NASA Tom,
Tom, I buried an oval shaped gold nugget about one-eighth by one-quarter inch dimensions, approx. weight of a grain or so. Buried at depths of two, two and one-half, and three inches respectively. In each instance the soil, a clay loam, was packed down firmly. The GB = 83 plus one detente step, the Fe3O4 meter read 0.1; the soil has some minor moisture...enough to make it easily c

Hi Bill, Tom, and Everyone,
I'm from Canada, about 40 minutes north of Toronto. Live in the countryside, in a rural subdivision, it's quiet here. Married 36 years this Sept, and started detecting 22 years ago at the age of 34. I've pretty much restricted detecting to autumn prospecting over the past 10 years, except for an occasional coin/beach outing. Was a hard core coin and b
