Something off the wall..... a detector that you can notch for a certain depth much like we do with disc. so you dont have to hear shallow targets. That might be possible with tone strengths.

TD id have to say id rather find the coins in the woods they do seem less affected by our actions.... like fertilizer and scratches. The ground seems a little more porous and easier digging in general. You do catch your coil.... especially a Pro coin... on objects, but to me the targets arent nearly as hard to TID. Obviously winter and spring are the best times to detect there.

Thats a great point Stan. Spent less money on a PI and make enough to buy your other needed machine. Then you have the best of both worlds. You have the right idea especially for those of us on a budget.

I have noticed where people are putting pieces of metal on their garrett pin pointers and allegedly gives greater pin pointing depth. Why would that work? If it does work.... would it work on a PI machine? Even on disc machines you can get more depth when the signal isnt being processed.... such as pinpoint. Some of the whites machines can do this... but like PI machines since the signal

Ive hunted a lot of wooded areas. That material breaks down fairly quickly. Also, the ground has movement with freeze and thaw, root movement and their sink rate is almost not happening unlike in Fla. Its surprising i dont find a lot of coins nearly as deep in the woods as i do in other areas. This is possibly due because in parks, fields, and around home sites we move more soil than mothe

I have to agree Wally its not very safe out there now days in many parts of our cities so i think the ones who do hunt are being limited to where they hunt... especially alone. Also we as guys have not problem posting for a hunting buddy.... its not quite that easy for the ladies. Id guess there is at least a 50 to one ratio. The ones i do know use lighter equipment.... which may restrict t

You bring up a good point Tom. Ive noticed a lot of people want to make a test garden with the thought of duplicating what they will find in the field. I cant see that happening unless like Dan its been there 20 years. The down side to a test garden i see is many times you are disturbing and sanitizing the soil and placing targets in it that move without knowing if they have turned or sunk.

Man Mike.... i know why the detector companies just put a bell or two on them now and get people to chat them up. It IS your nickel but mine comes a little harder than yours apparently. A lot of people lost the fast technology that comes out daily... computer, phones, IPOD and game stations. I enjoy the new stuff too, but has anyone taken a look at the money they put out in a year to hook t

Dan... what kind of MOVEMENT and coverage have you noticed in the targets... or can you judge that? Surely after 20 years this has some affect on the targets.... like minerals, dropped iron, and depth. Do we need to keep it sanitized or do we care? Going back to another thread.... when we buy a new detector how do we know what the reaction should be with this detector? If you havent used

Tom.... dont you have a DVD on test gardens?? I hunt some of those same type areas you hunt ozzie. This may be dumb of me.... but id use the test garden to tweak my detector and know its functioning correctly. Otherwise you dont have nearly the same conditions and expect the same results at all. Those fields i hunt are depth killers with hot rocks, minerals, iron, rust, brass ect.... and

J.T..... i hear you about getting to know your detector. My advice to anyone has always been.... never sell a detector until its paid for itself. At that point you have an idea if its for you and have a better working knowledge of how it works... or not.

The problem ive seen is there has to be more advances in tech otherwise you are just buying another detector just like the one under your bed. You may get more bells and a lot of soap box reviews tempting you to spend your hard earned cash.... but it is what it is just more expensive. I waiting on someone to raise the bar with a water proof PI with disc we can use in a park effectively.

TD thats exactly what i was referring to.... i remember those tests from psychology class. I used to work in a production plant before going into the Army. I noted my uncle who had been working there for 40 years... doing the same job... with the main goal being meeting production and making additional money. Once those production goals were made and he got his money for the day he slowed dow

Sometimes the problem with mass production is not being able to see the big picture which leads to board-um. Its kind of like the guys that puts the lug nuts on.... after serveral years he puts 4 on instead or 5 or doesnt tighten them.... why? Because he doesnt think any one really cares.

I have an uncle that im sure is well beyond your age and had to give up detecting many years ago. But.... i still take the time when im in town to swing by and show him some of my resent finds. Its not longer the hunt he can enjoy.... but the smile on his face when hes says .... ive found many of those let me tell you about them. To me this is a big part of the hobby ... making memories and

I now have the house in Englewood, Fla and looks like our house here in Indy will close by the 15th. Looks like ill be doing some water detecting soon. Cant let go of my Exp SE ... it should still come in handy since it has great depth on the beach. Does anyone know where in Fla close to my location i can put my hands on some of the more popular detectors like the DF, Xcal or CZ21? Before

Ive never used the V3 either... but i did use the DFX for several years so i can relate to the comment once you learn them you really get an better understanding of how a detector works. In fact id highly recommend anyone interested in detecting read Jeff Fosters book on the DFX. You will be amazed at how much is factory set on many machines. Some of these settings used on the DFX is sure

Isnt a 3 year warranty an up grade also? Im thinking i only got a year on the SE when they first came out back in 06? That non transferable warranty was the one thing that really bothered me when i bought new.... what if i didnt like the machine? It had to hurt the value on a trade or resale. I was wondering if i should trust their equipment if they didnt. That along with only having one

I think with the social network we also get flash buying before we really see the quality of the product. Its funny when a new and better machine comes out that it takes a rare individual to say.... man it just dont work after putting out big bucks. But.... once someone does sales sure fall off quickly. I think im more concerned with the constant get two or three out there this year ... jus

He didnt say it adjusts the freqs... he said those freq are RANDOMLY set unlike the Sov that is set at evenly at 1.5. I believe it was on this site that someone really explained how it worked. They discussed that it used the BEST two and one was used for ground i believe.... so basically 3 freqs. Ive talked to ML and tried to get the tech to tell me the settings for each of the 11 channels.

1850 to 1865 navy button... 2 piece converse brass, Scovill Mfg. Thats my guess. You cant really tell from that photo, but the eagle is setting on an anchor and looking to the right as apposed to a General Service button where the eagle looks left and normally has a shield.

On the DFX changing freq to 3 or 15 would affect the gap.... but each of these freqs have a down side... either mineral or EMI. I think GB also affects our ability to find these objects because of the salt setting.

I read somewhere dont recall where..... but once the dirt is removed and an air gap is created the detector can read the hole and minerals around it ignoring the coin. As far as Halo.... anyone thats pulled a plug with a penny and seen all that green discoloration that goes out sometimes an inch from the coin knows its being read.... just like iron rust. Ive had deep rusted bottle caps pop up

Kind of like Gen Eisenhower said that he learned something new every day. This hobby is constantly changing Aaron with new equipment. Much like any education.... we just need retraining occasionally. Hunting with other really gives you a different perspective and you pick up valuable tips and tricks. Thats why i think its good to have hunting buddies... everyone passes on their experience.

Did you check you digger? Cant tell you, especially with the damp soil, how many times a coin ended up on my digger or dropping off from it arms length away. With the in line probe that has pin point i dont loose many targets either.

Sold our home and will be moving to Fla by the end of July. Thou beach hunting is interesting.... this sounds more in line with my interests. You guys may have some company out there. I like the research and love the hunt. Being retired gives me the time to do both.
