Del,
Glad to see White's is still giving great service...
My TRX (one of the first) is still providing great service as my wife's pinpointer.
I've had great luck with PPs over the years, so far...knock on wood...never had to send one in.
Thanks for the report,
mike

Aaron,
My hunting buddy dropped his on the sidewalk...afterwards they wouldn't charge.
They worked fine, otherwise.
He had to send them in, and ML replaced them for him.

That's true...and alone with that defensive approach, they (LRL mfgs) have also adopted a more direct/offensive approach.

Perhaps. But you have to be careful...
I learned long ago, that there are times when it's a very thin line that separates an open mind from an empty head.

There's a couple of simple clues to show that it is...indeed...an LRL.
Look closely at the fancy handle mount in the dis-assembled illustration.
The whole assembly sits balanced atop...and freely moves on... a rotating bearing.
The other, perhaps more obvious clue, is the phrase "Long Range Detection".
(Kind of a give-away.)
Looks really technical, though...doesn't

Keith,
As far as the 'faux painting' aspect goes;
That's a hand colorized black & white photo.
Artists would 'paint in' the colors by hand directly on top of the b&w image, as the gelatin based silver emulsion would readily absorb the dyes.
Since they only had a small palette of colors to work with, the photos always have a distinct look of 'not being

Français,
No, I think he meant what he clearly stated,
"Squares usually in the ground are around 17 VDI., and out of the dirt around 7-9 VDI."
Depending on the severity of the ground, most single freq detectors shift ID on deep targets.

My first silver was a small coin spill...a silver washington quarter and two silver dimes...one of the dimes a rosie, the other a merc.
Found the first time out with a new AH Pro in 1974, under an old park bench in Rogers Park, along the lake in Chicago.
(couldn't have been more than 2 inches down)
Was hunting at night, as I had picked up the detector on the way home from late college c

I don't know about tomorrow, but here's another teaser video from earlier today...
Coils look very EQ like, and for a split second, you can see what looks like the bottom of the EQ handle...but in red plastic...and with a very 'Deus-esque' rod latch'.
Zero details, but high quality vid.

After another coin hunt last night where I picked up two more nice rings, I thought I'd share this:
One thing about the MDT I noticed early on is...It hates small/thin foil...a dead giveaway of some form of pulse technology.
So, just for fun today, I cut up the thin foil wrapper from a piece of cheapo Easter candy, and made some small foil targets.
I'm sorry, I didn't measur

Tom,
Probably the biggest advantage of those early Compass models (for it's efficiency in iron) was it's operating frequency...over 100k.
Compare to the later TR Disc machines running at around 17k, (and lower) make the Compass work great in iron.
However those old TR Disc machines still had/have the advantage of not being nearly as sensitive to the motion detectors effect/habit of

One you get it setup, you should experiment with some nails, foil trash, and coins in your yard...just to see how close you can get them together.
I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

The GB circuit isn't used in TR Disc mode...which is why mineralized ground eats TR Disc detectors for lunch.
(The all-metal and Motion Disc use the GB circuit.)
The three modes the Stingray has are:
VLF/TR/VLF Discriminator.
It can be used as an ALL METAL detector, as a TR discriminator, or as a Motion based discriminator.
Note the implication of the term "Motion based".

Yes.
Although all coils are spec'd to a design intent, there's always tiny variations in manufacturing processes that can introduce some deviation.
While well within design tolerance, this slight difference in impedance can express itself on the detector by being ever so slightly (or occasionally even more than slightly) off from the original coil's impedance...and thus GB sett

George,
If you can't find one, they're really easy to make (a piece of aluminum and a short piece of weatherstripping foam), BUT....
...that fastener is a bear to find.
It's called a NYLATCH mini-grip, two-piece panel fastener, and I believe it's made by a company called SOUTHCO.
I've had to replace them before.
They were used on several metal detector battery
