That MX-5 does quite well in that hot dirt even running the Concentric which does surprize me, It's a shame they are phasing the MX-5 out, It's a nice little Grab and Go Detector.

Thanks for posting it,

John.

yes! great for 'sidewalk easements!"..nice and light with a "kick"
best coil for it is the 'sweet" little 5.3 eclipse.

Hadn't heard that before ! it would be a shame to phase out one of the top notch sleeper detector......it don't look all that profeshional, but it does several things well.

Harold.... the later manufactured MX5's have that tone problem taken care of. We have talked about this glitch before, only privately. It is my main use detector along with the Toltec 100 at places in town where there is a need to cherry pick deep targets in somebody's front yard. Ya need to be more careful with target retrieval too.

They phased out the MXT also as I understand it. I just bought an MXT all pro w/950 coil and now u have to get a 950 coil xtra as all MXT all pros come with 10 DD coils.

I thought Keith said they never quite got it fixed?
Keith the 5.3 Eclipse coil is the best un masker
August 10, 2016 02:49PM
Hi Keith,,,,You left out the best coil in your video (5.3 Eclipse)....I just now run Monte's nailboard test with my MX5 using Coin mode using 2 tone option and the Disc, setting wide open all metal accept, sensitivity on 8 and a good ground balance by pumping coil over clean ground. It aced the test in #1 and more importantly the #2 position with the sweep 4 position down the barrel. In the real world in my ground (which is mild) the MX5 satisfies my metal detector needs well into the 21st century, it is just that good, don't have a use for foreign made machines.

yes harold, but apparently just a few early production units..i got one but sent it in,
and whitey determined i had a "weak" resistors they replaced it,and the problem
was gone.it's got some "balls" and is wicked fast in the crap with the little coil
i think potential hunters are passing it by because of the shi**y head phone jack placement.
kinda get's in the way,but it's a true sleeper in the line.does a lot of things well!

Randy I think I have a Video of the 5.3 on the MX5 doing down the barrel...

I will have to look ...but yes it does very well with that coil..

I lean towards those SEF in my soil to hold the threshold a bit smoother...

Side Note that 4x6 Eclipse does really really well on the MX5 on the Test!!

Thanks for the info!

John, I have used every White's coil and aftermarket SEF's (Double-D) on the MXT, MXT Pro, M6 and MX5 and found that in a wide-range of ground environments as well as barren to highly iron littered conditions, these detectors performance at-their-best using the 6½" and 9" spider Concentric coils. DD coils just don't work as well, ata least for me, and I try to wring the best performance out of any detector. They just seem to work better, by design, with a Concentric coil.

I just spoke with White's reps a couple of months ago and there wasn't any mention about phasing out the MX5. Seems like they have had more than enough troubles the past three, now four, years. I'd leave the MX5 alone as it is one of the two better all-purpose or versatile detectors in their current offerings.

Nope! The audio Tone issue was only their with the first production run and was quickly addressed. The problem? According to Carl Moreland, their chief engineer at the time, at the last moment they added one resistor to the circuitry for some reason just before production, and that turned out to be the cause. Removed the resistor and all-was-well.

100% correct. The MX5 with the 6½" Concentric coil most of the time, complemented by the 9" Concentric spider coil for more open areas with less trash, make the MX5 a very competitive model on the market today. It is what I regard as White's current 'best buy' model based on features, performance and price.

Yep, just original production units and repaired by removing a resistor, then they worked great!

Only 3 issues that annoy me: 1.. The headphone jack location. 2.. The lack of a Track-Lock. 3.. The pushbutton Pinpoint/All Metal touchpad as many people still have difficulty switching modes or using PP, especially if they don't get out with it often enough to get comfortable with it.

I agree, it would be a shame to drop the MX5, but White's has had a series of bad moves in the past decade or two. About 15 to 18 years ago they brought us the Classic ID, then the Classic IDX/IDX Pro as well as the 6000 Pro XL/XL Pro. Good moves.

Then they failed to promote the Classic series through healers and ads very well, didn't add a Threshold and GB control like the aftermarket work Mr. Bill did. Then they phased out the Classic series for the terrible performing Prizm series. Those became the Coinmaster series and they only kept one to bring out the also crappy new Treasure Master models. confused smiley In more recent years they brought out the very glitchy and over-featured (aka confusing) Spectra series and both the V3i and VX3 have been poor selling models overall. The two best detectors they now have are the overpriced MXT All-Pro and reasonable but still higher-priced MX5.

Anyone with an MX5 and two good coils will have a handy, functional White's model in-their-hand.

Yes, they phased out the original MXT ... finally. The MXT Pro, renamed All-Pro with an added 'All' in the side decal as the only change, also came with a shift to the 10" D2 DD coil as standard. However, the recent catalog failed to report than the MXT All-Pro can also be purchased with the 950 coil for about $50 less MSRP. That was verified to me when I asked the factory Distributor just a couple of months ago.

Sadly, with the moves other manufacturers have been making at reducing the MSRP of some excellent performing detectors, it has left White's with some key models that are now way over priced and they lack competitive features. For Example: MX5 is $599.95 and MXT All-Pro if $899.95. The don't have the features and performance for their class when up against the Teknetics T2 'Classic' at $499, Makro Racer at $499, Nokta FORS CoRe at $699 and the newer FORS Relic at $799 but that is with two search coils.

You made the better pick getting the MXT All-Pro with the Concentric coil, in my opinion. Just add the 6½" Concentric and it will be more versatile.

yes! monte! they are over priced,HOWEVER,both are discounted!..ya just gotta talk some sh*t with the dealers
and you can be successful in getting the money down on both the mx-5 and the mxt all pro.the small concentric makes
'em both" lazer like" in the trash, practically transforming the performance characteristics of the detectors.if i didn't have my mx-5,
i belive i definitely would be chasing that "classic t2"..love the trigger function!

have to admit,so far, have NOT experienced ANY problem whatsoever with
'auto track" on the mx-5..the detector tracks accurately with NO targets tracked out
in the junk..i run 2 tone, with nothing notched out.separation is extremely quick, and with a clear 'distinct"
sharp audio i cannot over state how efficient that little coil is (5.3 eclipse) in the iron and trash.it's just a joy to
hunt with,and very light.
