What does the following letters or abbreviated words mean in regards to the metal detecting field?

dGnd
Norm
Diff
Var
mL
mM
mH
Conf

dGnd is Digital ground as opposed to Analog Ground (aGrnd) on a circuit that uses a common power supply for both Digital and Analog circuitry.
mH is probably Milli Henry, a measurement of inductance.
Diff is possibly Differential, a differential or imbalance in the detector's circuitry occurs when a metal object is detected.
mL does stand for Milli Lamberts, a measurement of luminense, but I don't think that would be used in metal detecting.
Var is posibily Variable, such as in circuit gain.

That's my input anyway. Hope it helps.

Give us a clue. Are these related to a specific model/manufacturer? Are they on a circuit diagram, or a PCB, or control knob labels?

Minelab E-trac metal detector test mode............

You are exactly right, but what does it mean?

I'd like to see Tom jump in here.

Here's the Geotech mention of it:

I'm guessing the mL,M,H are low/medium/high?
Var might be a voltage, ie. V (ar)

I got out for a couple of hours today. Here are two photo's of the analysis screen I took on my E-Trac. First I did a noise cancel and it settled on channel 9. The first pic was in clean ground and the second one was over a target (sorry, don't remember what it was). Note that my ground according to the V3i is 1% iron mineralized - and at a very high level there within. According to my Omega, I believe it was one or two bars and low to medium. I would love if the E-Trac was giving some form of ground balance reading.

Further tests you could try would be with the search-head away from the ground, and with a piece of ferrite (rod) held near-ish the coil.
