Both my Grandparents were in the same Cavalry unit in the civil War...

Its was the 6th Ga cavalry....

man I like finding out my hunch's were right...

And last month I found a picture of 2nd Great grandad on my My other's side...

Now to find My 3rd Great Grandad's pic on the Southern's side!

Sorry its off topic.. But Geneology is alot like detecting to me anyway's...

That's cool Keith! Have you ever found any artifacts from the 6th Ga Calvary?

Well Ray nothing that says 6th Ga on it but I have hunted the Known camp's of Wheelers cavalry here in the Atlanta campaign...And I have found relics in those site's..

I alway's think of my Ancestors when I hunt those spot's..

The 6th Ga was a true home State defender....theyfought in all the major battle's in GA...

early in the war they were in the Kentucky Campaign but once the Fighting shifted South To the Great State of GA the Boys came home to defend...

What's funny is most of the Ga units ended up in Virgina...As Ga sent a whole mess of them to Virginia in the begining...So the Units my Grandads were in were truly Gurading their homestate...

Kentucky Campaign: Aug-Oct 1862 (Smith's Legion)
Perryville, Ky: Oct 8, 1862 (Smith's Legion)
Cumberland Gap: Oct 1862 (Smith's Legion)
Flat Lick, Ky: Oct 1862 (Smith's Legion)
Big Creek Gap, Tn: Oct-Nov 1862 (Smith's Legion)
Snake Creek Gap, Tn: Oct-Nov 1862 (Smith's Legion)
Murfreesboro, Tn: Nov-Dec 1862 (Smith's Legion)
Leat's Tanyard, or Rock Spring, Ga: Sep 12, 1863
Chickamauga, Ga: Sep 19-20, 1863
Chattanooga Siege: Sep-Nov 1863
Philadelphia, Tn: Oct 20, 1863
Knoxville Siege: Nov-Dec 1863
Atlanta Campaign: May-Sep 1864
Atlanta Siege: Jul-Sep 1864
Savannah Campaign: Nov-Dec 1864
Carolinas Campaign: Feb-Apr 1865

Whats unique aslo is the Isaac Justis my 2nd Great grandfather owned land at the Base of Kennesaw Mountian..And the old Homesite is now inside the Parkgrounds of Kennesaw natipnal Battlefield..His son My great grandad sold it to the NPS in the 1930's I believe it was...

Isaac is actually burried about 75 Yards in front of Hardees Salient on the Kennesaw mountian Line...He in an old Church cemetary that has the trench line running along the edge fo the cemetary...He did not die till 1924 ..Wild that he would be burried so close to the Ground He fought on and that gorund would be his Homesite also during the war....

..Oh by the way...My 5th Great Grandfather Gipson Southern also defended Ga in the Revolutionary War.....He fought along the coast and into Northern Florida Territory...Sort of Gives Me alot of State Pride...!!I have hunted one of those rev war camsp He was supposed to be in...real deep woods along the Ga Fla Border...gots some Msuket balls and flat Button's that date to about 1780 so they were the right age...!

Ok That's enough LOL!!!

Keith, that adds a whole new and awesome dimension to hunting!!!! Especially since you are in the vicinity!!!!
MY great great great Grandfather on my mother's side....Patrick Shea....fought for the Union. I tell ya...Tennessee....even my OWN COUNTY was divided on the issue of secession. People on the East side of the river were Northern sympathizers, people on the west side of the river.......SOUTHERN. Savannah is on the East side. And Savannah is where I have found many Northern relics. BUT....one drooped wind Eagle local staff officers button (Southern).
Back to your findings. That is plain awesome and interesting.

Thanks Keith for the post, my mom got in to it before she passed, chances are your relatives knew at least some of mine. Colonel Robert R Watkins on my Moms side goes back to before Ga was a state He wrote the by laws for the territory of GA. Watkinsville GA is named after him.
Finding the picture of your Great great grand dad was awesome hope you find the others.

Be Well

Thank's for the replies Fella's..

Yes geneology is very addictive...

I have took my direct line Of Southern's though my grandads all the way back to 1180 ..Yes 2 of my Grandad's were Knight's in the Old Country of England...

Sounds like a few of you have done some research.. Good for Yall...If we dont record it now it will be lost I am afraid in the next few generation's..Maybe less..

This next generation coming along does not seem to care much about Our past... And that'st scary.....You know what they say Those who ignore History are bound to repeat it...

One more Pic ..

This is my Great Great grandads Wife which is my great great Grandma,,,LOL!!

Lucinda Justis...

family lore say's she was Cherokee indian...she does look alot like it...I am researching it...

Ozzie about the resemblance..I look more like the Southern's ...But I do have a Cousin he's a Justis and he eerily looks like the photo...only younger..I can see it in His eye's..

My mom looks alot like Lucinda though..

So many of those old photos include information because it is not there. No jewelry. No earrings. No fancy hairdo. Black dress without character. Stoic expressions. You can almost see in the photo her stern creed: Hard work and no frills is God's way.

You missed your calling bud...we need people like you to teach in our schools. I hated history as a kid...always had lame teachers who would just tell ya to read and memorize dates.I finally had one teacher in 10th grade who would make it fun and relevant. I could see you teaching with a real hands on aproach, Ray

Keith -- VERY cool!

I can't much get my wife interested in my detecting, though she is interested in history and perks up when I bring home an oldie; I may have rubbed off on her a bit, though, because, like you, she's getting into geneaology!

Thanks for sharing.

Steve
Good research there Keith

always nice to trace your ancestors back to historical significance/relevance of any sort!

Keep us informed of anymore findings you may make :-)

Keith: Not really off topic ... personal perhaps ... but for sure what most of us are very interested in!

Thank you for sharing such interesting personal information with us.

In college one of my required classes dealt with the Civil War ... and the idiot I was I really ignored it ..and now so many years later find it one of the most intriquing times in our history and wish I could retake that class. I'm sure I'd get a definte A today!

I also didn't care for history class matter of fact I didn't care for school much at all. I did alright at school (graduated in 1979) but found school very boring. Now after almost 30 years of detecting and talking to you good folks down south on the phone about relic hunting I wished that I would of payed more attention in school especially about the Civil War, I could listen to people like Keith talk for hours (even if you's do talk alittle funny, lol). Thanks for the post Keith, I enjoyed reading it.

Here you go Possum...

But Daddy always said I must of been the milkman's ...

But serioulsy though I look like the Southern Side of the family more than the Justis....

Yall take it easy on me!

Although I do have some resemblance on the Justice side though My grandpaw Grady Justis.....this is a pic of Him in 1945 I pulled off the Atlanta History center website of the Mill he was working in...

On a side note you see that little short guy on the end of the line back row right....That's His Father in law George Washington Hendrix....My great Grandpa on My mothers momma's side...He worked in that Mill till He died .. He was there for 70 years I believe it was...

I have a great uncle standing there to in that Picture...

Sort of neat getting it off the Atlanta Hsotry center webiste....that mill was started after the civil war and ran till about 1970....Its a part of the American Industriual South history...My grandma worked there too with my Gandad... They started working there when they were 12 years old....

Thanks for sharing Keith--yes genealogy fascinates me as well! While we are on the subject, there is veteran who is a source of pride in my family as well. All you Southern boys--Yankee pride has to represent too! winking smiley
My great-great-great-grandfather:

1st Lt Aaron Lanfare
Co B 1st Conn calvary
Awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for capture of 11th Florida Infantry regimental flag Sailor's creek Virginia 6 April 1865

The 1st Conn and my Great-Great-Great-Grandfather served in Sheridan's Shenandoah Valley Campaign from August to December. He fought at Cedar Creek, Reams's Station, Five Forks, Yellow Tavern, and Sailor's Creek. His unit also had the honor of escorting General Grant on his way to Appomatox. There is a Telescope presented to my Great-Great-Great Grandfather by Queen Victoria. It's currently on display at the Branford, Connecticut Public Libarary.
