1800's Button Find Question...
December 05, 2015 01:59AM
Hi all... I found this button yesterday in Washington State... Now I've seen you guys find many buttons of similar style down South over the years, but the kind I usually find are nothing like this. My research tells me this style logo was made 1860-1880. That's the Indiana State Seal on the front. I'ts around 7/8" across. I also know an early family came to this area from Indiana in late 1800's, so possibly lost by them. I'm wondering if this is from a military coat, possibly even Civil War or ? Since it's not an Eagle, or Eagle with "I" or something, maybe someone could shed some light on what type of coat might have this been on... Did military coats sometimes have State Seal only buttons?... thanks!

It is a 'Coat' button (vs a 'cuff' button). State Seal buttons were primarily utilized for/as militia (and military) decorative statement insignia.

Vaguely recall that paticular style backmark dating postwar, 1880's or later. Ive dug a few local railroad buttons that were similar. Im no button expert though.
