help with wireless options
January 12, 2017 03:54PM
Recently I broke my headphones that came with my Ace 350 so I have been trying to come up with a cheap wireless alternative. For Christmas, I received a pair of Scull Candy Uproar headphones which are bluetooth only. So I did a little reading and found that I could use a bluetooth transmitter to plug into the detector and use my new phones. So I ordered a low latency transmitter and waited 5 days for it to show up, put it on and got them connected. Well, they didnt send me the low latency transmitter that I ordered so the lag time was terrible. So I tried again, ordered the correct low latency transmitter, waited 5 days for it to show up and.... still some lag time with the air tests, and the medium and hig tones are the same sound. only difference is the medium tone is a beep and the high tone is a bell tone, but both are the same sound. Am I wasting my money or am I doing something wrong? I was hoping to come up a decent option that worked so I could use it on the Relic when I finally get it. What do you all think?

My 2cents is to punt on the bluetooth.
I have yet to hear of a bluetooth set-up without lag difficulties,,something about the signal processing/compression that probably isn't appropriate for detecting sounds to begin with. I'm not sure if even Makro has worked it out yet.
Your best bet , although not the cheapest at a projected $150 cost , is the new Z-link set-up Garrett is about to introduce. Also consider the Deteknix unit that allows the user to use their own headphones. Cheapest are the Rapoos but you have to use their headphones. All of those operate on 2.4 ghz with minimal lag time

I have seen a few videos on the Z-lynk. It looks like the Detetnix unit with a Garrett paint job. Does anyone have experience with either of the two mentioned? I guess I'll use my new bluetooth phones for watching detecting videos while its still too cold to detectsmileys with beerdrinking smiley

Some recent talk on a UK forum about low-latency wireless phones has drawn attention to gaming headphones. They have to be low-latency because of their real-time interactive use. A popular brand is Turtle Beach, a budget model that's tested as suitable is the X32. They need some electrical tinkering to make them suit detector use. The microphone needs removing from the headphones, and a 5 volt power source is needed for the dongle. They are normally powered from a 5 volt USB port on a games machine, like a PS2.
It's possible they may be OK on 4 x AAA cells, or even 1 x LiPo, but there are alternative solutions, like a 5 volt regulator module, and those 'battery bank' gizmo's with a USB output.
They do come up on 'online auction sites' regularly.

You have to make sure both transmitter and receiver/headphones support low latency. For bluetooth Aptx low latency. or BT 4.1

These are all bluetooth like 2.4ghz frequency hopping piconet technologies. Make sure latency is under 50ms and you should be good. However, audio quality from encoding will vary and never be as good as wired.

Why not just post it here. It's not the Finds Forum where it's not allowed.

I have used both the Rapoo headphones and the Deteknix "dongle" set-up and both work acceptably. The Rapoo sit on the ears and are inexpensive and feel that way for about $50 to $60. The Deteknix are around $90 , let you use the headphones of your choice and work fine as well. Both have battery life of about 6 hours continuous use.
The Garrett Z-link is still in the pimping stage so no real world evaluations are out , just the price and specs.
Another entry in to the world of wireless is Minelab's new WM?X which looks like the WM 10 but works with other detectors. No prices available that I have seen but , as long as the FEDs keep interest rates under 3% , you can probably get a second mortgage to buy it with when they do hit the market.

I was the first to mod the Turtle Beach X-31 and X-32's for detector use and posted about them. They are superb.
The X-32's are dual band 2.4 and 5khz http://www.en.akaforums.com/threads/wireless-headset-build.195/

Hey Sven what did you think of the fisher GBP clone??

Good work Sven, I was unaware you were the originator. The first poster on the UK forum thread is an electronics tinkerer, I'd assumed he was likely the source...
I actually got round to ordering a set of X32's a few days ago (off eBay), for a ML Sovereign project I'm working on. I intend making a decent job of the technicals, I will post with any useful tech stuff I discover.

Still have it, works great for $100. The large coils that come with it were crap, the 5" coil works, a few false on wet grass. I put a genuine Fisher 5" GBP coil on. Excellent trash detector and loves Canadian clad coins.
Tried the NEL and Fisher 5x10" coils on it, sold both and keep the 5" on it. You can buy it as a G2 as well.
Did add All metal/disc toggle switch so you could leave your threshold set for all metal mode. Makes for a much nicer detector.

Just snip the pot legs, solder a toggle switch to the legs that are still soldered to the PCB.

Tdk wr700s clear technology, no lag. Buy a inline volume control. Best of the best, hands down been swinging with them for yrs. High quality performance

Will the Deteknix transmitter work with any 2.4ghz headphones? or do they have to be the phones that come with the transmitter? I like the idea of the Turtle beach phones but I dont think I have the right tools for the job of converting them. Ill look into the Rapoo phones too. can that transmitter be used with other phones too?confused smiley

The Rapoo only work with their headset.
Deteknix has a couple of different models of headsets which are dedicated to their transmitter only but also have a transmitter which pairs up with a receiver that you can plug the headsets of your choice into as do the Z-link and Minelab

I was told by Deteknix their transmitter will work with many 2.4ghz headphones. And the headphones should pair up with many transmitters.
Which ones-brands, don't know.
