What are steel bottle caps really made of?
July 21, 2019 03:05PM
I have puzzled over this question for a while - what are these “steel” caps made of. After wasting an hour on the web I have concluded that it is likely that they are “Tin Free Steel” or TFS. This differs from “tin Plate Steel” or TPS by the use of metallic chromium instead of tin in the laminate. TPS is what most cans were made of - TFS is used because of its superior anti corrosion qualities and its suitability for painting or other decorative exterior finishes.

Tin Free Steel

Features

TFS has excellent lacquer adhesion properties allowing use for food cans, beverage cans and general line cans.
Excellent resistance to black sulfide stain makes it the most suitable material for making fish cans.
Even when the same surface finish as TIN PLATE is applied to the substrate steel sheet,
it provides the unique surface luster characteristic of metallic chromium.

I know its nerdy, but I like learning stuff like this. Thanks for posting it, Rick.

(and in the spirit in trying to contribute something, I learned yesterday that EPNS on a hallmark means ElectroPlated Nickel Silver, which actually has no silver except in the plating. the base metal is Copper, Nickel and Tin)

They will go rings dingy on loads of detectors.

You never hear of purex?
I think it was original name for bleach. Then came Clorox.
Most older caps I have found detecting are yellow and say purex on them.
They must be made out of super high quality whatever due to corrosive threat of liquid in containers.
They won’t rust!! Indon’t think ever in 100 years buried.

Allow me to dig in my junk finds pile and find one. I’ll take a pic of it and post.

Think you might have it backwards there, TN

Purex started making bleach out of a garage in 1922 (technically 1923)...almost 10 years after Clorox.
(Clorox started manufacturing first commercial bleach in the US back in 1913.)

Purex was indeed considered Clorox's biggest competitor for a while, though.

I could have it backwards.
Seems if my memory is correct though, some of the caps (older:have just the word bleach on them.

Could be. Purex did make both bleach and laundry detergent.
Might not want to mix them up.

Those Purex caps do generally hold up well now that you mention it. I've found dozens, I can't remember any that weren't blue and white.
