Steve, that's a amazing you are still finding so much clad up there in Maine. Down here, nobody brings coins to the beach anymore and we find hardly any. We do dig some old clad now and then at the beach but it's usually so corroded you can't spend it or put it through Coinstar. A lot of it goes in the trash. I probably dig about $20 in spendable clad a year total.

I stopped carrying coins over a decade ago. I don't even spend paper money. I keep a couple of twenty's in my wallet in case of emergency and they have been in there for years.

Badger, a lot of the coins come from yards I work at and playgrounds, I have about 30 or so playgrounds I hit weekly during the summer, I go to the beach more during the winter or after a big storm, my wife and I like to go for rides on the weekends and if I see a school, I stop and detect the playground, during the week I go around here, if I didn't do the playgrounds, I would forget how to detect between Spring and when the fields are cut

Ah yes, playgrounds. That makes sense. Been a long time since I've done a playground. Sounds like you need some cellar holes to detect while waiting to hunt those fields.

I'm in Canada and the loonie, toonie coins ($1 & $2) are what kept me going with the hobby, along with the exercise. Note that the loonie is only worth about 3 quarters right now though. So, over $1300 Canadian for the mythical $1000 US in a year. Doable in urban areas a few years back if you were retired with lots of free time on your hands along with a car and/or transit pass. Nowadays this would be very difficult to do.
I enjoy picking up some clad with my main goal being a gold ring or two, which can certainly put more $ in the coffers quickly. cheers

I don't do a lot of clad stabbing these days, but still end up with a fair bit of it.

Every year in May, a group of folks from all over get together in Tonopah, NV for 3-5 days of sifting, ghost town detecting, and general fun hanging out with old friends and new friends alike. I take all of my change, from club hunts, pocket change that goes into my change vase, and dug clad and turn it in at the casino for currency. At the end of the day, we go our for dinner and then in the evening we hang out and visit in the casino. My clad becomes my gambling budget for 4-5 days, with the goal of not augmenting it with a visit to the ATM eye rolling smiley Usually it works out, and sometimes I come home with a little more then I brought.
