The GC-1023 was a cheap little Chinese detector that worked better than it had a right to. Don't know if they still make 'em, but as I recall you could get one for about $60 or so. It had a display that was just a signal intensity meter, so for all practical purposes it was a beep and dig.

Been a long time since I used one so my details are a bit fuzzy, someone else here can probably tell you more about it. I'm pretty sure if Keith Southern raved about it, that would be because of value compared to price.
