What is happening is: ElectroMagnetic energy self-canceling. A Spherical object presents a double-mirror image of itself (in --phase shift-- reciprocal fashion). . . . . . regardless of frequency.

When you 'flattened' the #7-1/2 birdshot......... the conductivity (and mass) never changed (EQX still ID'd as '1')....... but the self-canceling mirror image was removed from the algorithmic/algebraic equation; hence, better detection (and range) ability.
