Thinking out side the coil.....

In your Fisher Intelligence 5th edition on page 13, titled Sensitivity Training you stated that when you increase the sensitivity you would also increase the detection depth and width of the coil which I understand. The opposite happens when you reduce the sensitivity. Instead of buying a smaller coil why not just reduce the sensitivity, if you're not hunting deep targets? Would this work ok?

It is the audio presentation that may become more intelligible.... when Sens is lowered.....as long as targets are fairly shallow. Yes, it helps..... BUT...... a smaller and/or different coil presents a completely different electromagnetic footprint. If a larger coil is right at the edge of NOT being able to detect a closely co-located target due to adjacent target separation failure; no matter what you do with the Sens.... will not help. It is the EM footprint of THAT coil....that will 'mask' (adjacent target separation failure) the closely co-located targets.

But if you're running your discrimination at 0 the machine should fire on at least one target, regardless of what coil is used, correct?

Yes, it'll see one of the targets...... but the good target may still remain masked.
